Adult Portable Bed Rail Deaths Result in CPSC Recall, Due To Risk of Entrapment and Suffocation

Adult Portable Bed Rail Deaths Result in CPSC Recall

Federal safety officials are instructing healthcare workers and families to immediately stop using more than 120,000 Vive Health bed rails due to asphyxiation risks.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the Vive Health Bed Rail recall on March 26, warning that individuals may become trapped within the rail, or between the rail and the mattress, potentially causing them to suffocate.

Portable Bed Rail Risks

Bed assist rails are portable devices that attach to adult patientsโ€™ beds to provide safety and support in hospitals, nursing homes and in-home care settings, where many users are bedridden or have limited mobility. However, because these individuals often cannot reposition themselves, the rails may create dangerous gaps between the rail and mattress that pose serious, life-threatening risks.

Since 2021, at least 18 deaths have resulted from dangerous bed rail designs. In response, U.S. regulators issued new safety standards for bed rails in 2023, which included testing procedures and performance criteria.

Despite these efforts, more than 1.5 million portable bed rails were recalled in 2024, following the deaths of at least two patients who became entrapped. That same year, an additional 200,000 Medical King bed assist rails were recalled due to design defects that led to the death of a 66-year-old man who became entrapped between the mattress and the bed rail.

Vive Health Adult Portable Bed Rail Recall

Vive Health has received at least two reports of entrapment-related deaths associated with its bed rails. The incidents occurred in September 2024 and involved a 97-year-old man at an assisted living facility in Texas and a 93-year-old man at his home in Florida.

The recall affects approximately 122,000 units purchased on or before August 21, 2023, including:

  • Vive Health Bed Rails, model LVA1024
  • Compact Bed Rails, model LVA2009SLV
  • Bed Rail Collection V, model LVA2097SLV

The recalled bed rails are constructed from silver or white metal tubing with a black foam grip handle. The devices were manufactured in China and sold at medical supply stores nationwide and online, including Vive Health, Amazon and other retailers, from September 2019 through December 2025 for between $45 and $90.

Vive Health previously recalled units of model LVA1024 purchased after August 21, 2023, in a February 19, 2026 announcement.

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the recalled bed rails and contact Vive Health for a full refund. Customers will be instructed to write โ€œRECALLEDโ€ on the upper and lower portions of the bed rails with a permanent marker, take a photo of the marked bed rail with the buyerโ€™s name on a piece of paper and email it to recalls@vivehealth.com.
