Adventure Playsets Swings Recalled Due to Fall Risk

A recall has been issued for approximately 240,000 wooden swing sets by Adventure Playsets, many of which were included in a prior recall, due to problems with wood rot and a potential risk that the swing sets may collapse.

The Adventure Playsets swing set recall was announced on June 29, by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The manufacturer, Adventure Playsets, received more than 500 complaints involving weakening wood in the uprights. At least one fall has been attributed to a ladder failing due to rot, which led to bruises and scratches, but no serious injury.

The CPSC has determined that if the wood in the posts of the fort sections of the swing sets rot, then it could pose a fall hazard.

The Adventure Playsets swing set recall affects 240,000 sets. The playsets have swings, slides and ladders, as well as a small covered area. The sets were sold between 2004 and 2007 under the following names: Bellevue, Bellevue II, Belmont, Durango, Durango II, Sedona, Tacoma, Tacoma II, Ventura, Venture II and Yukon. A complete list of the affected models is available in the recall notice.

The swing sets were sold at Walmart, Toys-R-Us, Academy Sports, Mills and Menards from 2004 through 2007 for $300 to $600 each.

All of the sets were part of a larger swing set recall in November 2009, involving 275,000 Adventure Playsets sold in the United States, and nearly 7,000 sold in Canada. That recall was issued due to a rusk of wood rot in the overhead horizontal ladder/monkey bars. There were 16 injuries associated with the failing monkey bars, including nine which resulted in trips to the emergency room.

The CPSC recommends that consumers immediately stop using the swing sets and contact Adventure Playsets for a free repair kit, which will include new upright posts for each model and instructions on installation.
