Infant Deaths Lead to Amby Baby Hammock Recall

About 24,000 Amby Baby Motion Beds are being recalled after two infants reportedly suffocated in the hammock-like beds.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the baby hammock recall on Tuesday, after two infant deaths were reported to the manufacturer, Amby Baby U.S.A. One 4-month-old girl from Lawrenceville, Georgia, died in one of the hammocks in June, and and a 5-month-old boy in Gresham, Oregon, died in August. In both cases the infants suffocated in the hammock.

The CPSC’s Baby Motion Bed recall announcement says that the side-to-side motion of the hammock can allow a child to roll and become trapped between the fabric of the hammock and/or the mattress pad, potentially leading to suffocation.

The recall includes about 24,000 Amby Baby Motion Beds, sold online at Ambybaby.com and other internet retailers from January 2003 through October 2009. The beds include a steel frame and a fabric hammock connected by a large spring and metal crossbar. There is a label sewn into the hammocks that reads: “Amby – Babies Love It, Naturally.” There was only one model of the hammock sold, and all are being recalled.

The CPSC and Amby Baby USA are recommending that consumers immediately stop using the hammocks and contact the company for a free repair kit. In the interim, they are urged to find alternative sleeping arrangements for infants currently using the beds.

I have tried calling and emailing also during the days and times posted on their AmbyBaby.com website and get no reply, phone number answering machine says no one can answer now and you cannot leave a message. I was hoping to get a refund, but it doesn't sound very promising, and I don't want a repair kit. It has been in the bag for 2 1/2 years! I thought about selling it to someone, but with the recall, I may not even want to do that either.

The number Amby provides has been disconnected and no response to the e-mails I have sent!Shouldn't they be required to do something about this?! I for one will be extremely surprised if there are any kits, refunds or anything from Amby!

What is the progress with Amby Canada. They are not answering emails or telephone calls. We require a full and immediate refund for this dangerous and defective product they have sold us. Shameful response from them! Buyer beware!

We purchased this bed for our 5 month old and immediately moved him out into a play pen. It is very unfortunate that those two babies died while sleeping in the Amby Baby Motion Bed. I couldn't imagine what the parents are going through. However, I would like to know more about the incidents. I imagine the reason no one can find more information on them is due to the lawsuit, which doesn't allow parents to make informed decisions. Also, they suggest everyone stop using them immediately and switch to a safer alternative. What's the safer alternative? In the past two years, CPSC has announced the recall of over 5 million cribs, bassenets and play yards. That sounds much more safe (please sense the sarcasm here)!

I would like a full refund. No kit. The lives of my grandchildren are more important to me than taking another chance.
