Baja Motorsports Dirt Bike Recall Due to Fuel Tank Leaks, Fires

About 4,300 Baja Motorsports dirt bikes have been recalled due to a defective fuel system, which has caused several bikes to burst into flames and resulted in at least one injury.

The Baja Motorsports dirt bike recall was announced on March 9 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) after Baja Inc. received six reports of bikes catching fire. There was also one person who suffered minor burns to their leg due to the fuel leak, which appears to be originating from the fuel tank.

The recall affects all DR50 and DR70 model Baja Motorsports dirt bikes that have a vehicle identification number (VIN) starting with L98. Both the model number and the VIN are located on a product data plate on the side of the bike’s “goose neck.”

The recalled dirt bikes were sold exclusively at Pep Boys stores nationwide for between $550 and $650 from December 2010 through January 2011.

The dirt bike recall comes less than a year after Baja was forced to recall more than 300,000 mini-bikes and go-carts due to similar fuel leak problems. In the Baja Motorsports mini-bike and go-cart recall there were nine reports of gas caps leaking and detaching, 25 reports of the throttle getting stuck and at least one child suffered a serious burn injury due to the fuel leak.

The CPSC recommends that any consumers using the recalled dirt bikes should immediately stop using them and contact Baja Motorsports to schedule a free repair. Consumers can call Baja Motorsports at 1-888-863-2252 or visit the company’s website at www.bajamotorsports.com.
