Baja Motorsports Dirt Bike Recall Reannounced After Fire

Continuing reports of fires and minor burns has led federal safety regulators to re-announce a recall of Baja Motorsports dirt bikes.

The original Baja Motorsports dirt bike recall was issued in March 2011 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) after Baja Inc. received at least six reports of the bikes catching fire.

Since the recall, however, the CPSC and Baja Motorsports indicate that at least 10 more incidents have occurred involving fires, including two minor burn injuries, leading the CPSC to again attempt to notify consumers that they are trying to get the defective dirt bikes off the market.

The recall affects all DR50 and DR70 model Baja Motorsports dirt bikes that have a vehicle identification number (VIN) starting with L98. Both the model number and the VIN are located on a product data plate on the side of the bike’s “goose neck.” According to the CPSC, the fuel tanks on these bikes can leak, causing a fire and burn hazard for consumers.

The recalled dirt bikes were sold exclusively at Pep Boys stores nationwide for between $550 and $650 from December 2010 through January 2011.

In 2010, Baja was forced to recall more than 300,000 mini-bikes and go-carts due to similar fuel leak problems. In the Baja Motorsports mini-bike and go-cart recall there were nine reports of gas caps leaking and detaching, 25 reports of the throttle getting stuck and at least one child suffered a serious burn injury due to the fuel leak.

The CPSC recommends that any consumers using the recalled dirt bikes should immediately stop using them and contact Baja Motorsports to schedule a free repair. Consumers can call Baja Motorsports at 1-888-863-2252 or visit the company’s website at www.bajamotorsports.com.
