Chariot Bicycle Trailer Recall: Injury Hazard

About 44,000 bicycle trailers and 70,000 bicycle trailer conversion kits manufactured by Chariot Carriers have been recalled due to the risk they could cause an injury for children.

The Chariot Carrier bicycle trailer recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on January 11, after the manufacturer received at least 24 reports worldwide of trailer hitches breaking and cracking.

According to the CPSC, the trailer hitch mechanism has a tendency to crack and break, which can cause the trailer to detach from the bicycle. Although there have been no injuries linked to the defective bicycle trailers and trailer conversion kits, this could pose an injury hazard to children who may be riding in the bicycle trailer at the time.

The recall affects Chariot bicycle trailers with serial numbers ranging from 1205-xxxx to 0710-xxxx, which is located on the left side of the frame. It also affects bicycle trailer conversion kits with model number 20100503 on a label on the aluminum tube. The recall also affects older conversion kits without the label that have a release push button where the hitch arm links to the carrier.

The trailers and conversion kits were sold at bicycle stores nationwide and online. The trailers themselves sold for between $400 and $925 from December 2005 through August 2010, and the conversion kits sold for between $40 and $70 from October 2002 through August 2011. They were manufactured in Canada.

The CPSC recommends that consumers immediately stop using the trailers and conversion kits and contact Chariot Carriers for a free repair kit. Consumer can contact Chariot Carriers by calling (800) 262-8651 or by visiting the company’s website at www.chariotcarriers.com.
