Ford Faces Class Action Lawsuit Over Vehicles Equipped with 10R80 Transmissions

2023 Ford Ranger Airbag Recall

Ford Motor Company faces a class action lawsuit brought on behalf of owners of certain Ford Expedition, Mustang, Ranger, F-150 and Lincoln Navigators vehicles, which are equipped with an 10R80 10-speed transmission, which may be prone to harsh and erratic gear shifts, as well as a sudden loss of power.

The complaint (PDF) was filed on July 11 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida by Joseph Vangel and Bryan Klontz, seeking class action status to pursue damages on behalf of all owners of Ford vehicles equipped with the 10R80 transmissions, which is allegedly defective.

Plaintiffs indicate that numerous vehicle owners have complained to Ford about problems with the transmission, including reports that vehicles lost power while accelerating as drivers tried to merge onto freeways or cross busy intersections. This was due to the transmission failing to shift up or down, plaintiffs claim.

In addition, the Ford class action lawsuit claims the problems may cause some drivers to experience whiplash and discomfort from the harsh way the vehicles shift, increase the risk of distractions while driving due to the system’s loud and unusual sounds, and generally make occupants not feel safe in the 10R80-equipped vehicles.

Ford Transmission Complaints Ignored

According to the lawsuit, Ford has known about problems with the transmissions, but refused to replace them. Instead, the lawsuit claims Ford told vehicle owners that the abrupt and harsh shifting they reported was “normal”.

“Defendant knew or should have known that the Vehicles contain one or more design and/or manufacturing defects, including but not limited to defects contained in the Vehicles’ 10R80, a 10-speed automatic transmission that can shift harshly and erratically, causing the vehicle to jerk, lunge, clunk, hesitate, surge, or slip between gears. Some consumers have even reported experiencing a sudden loss of power while driving their vehicles,” the lawsuit states. “This common design and/or manufacturing defect in Ford’s 10R80 transmissions is a potentially life-threatening safety issue, and Ford has refused to recall or replace the defective Transmissions.”

Ford has issued several Technical Service Bulletins in relation to the problem, but the company has maintained that the issues being reported are normal, and refused to repair or recall the vehicles.

The lawsuit indicates that if plaintiffs and class members had known about the transmission problems, they would not have purchased the vehicles, or would have paid significantly less for them.

The class action includes a lengthy list of examples of complaints submitted by vehicle owners to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) over the last several years.

The lawsuit presents claims of breach of warranty, negligence, fraud, fraudulent concealment, unjust enrichment and violations of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and Florida’s Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act.

Plaintiffs seek to have the lawsuit given class action status and call for Ford to pay compensatory and punitive damages to vehicle owners.

2019 F150, transmission issues.1.18.2024

I have an 2020 f-150 that was in the dealer for ten days in February and is back in the dealer again with the same transmission issues that I read about above! First time truck was at 57,000 miles and now the truck is at 77,000 with more of the same and has been there for already for almost two weeks now with no update! I reached out to customer service multiple times and let me tell you this is the last vehicle I get from them and will tell everyone I know my experience with this company and to avoid at all costs!

2018 Lincoln Navigator with 72k miles. Extended warranty expired 11/28/23. Dealer had my car for a month last year for similar issues, but didn’t replace transmission. Car stalling. Confirmed it now needs a new transmission. Dealer unwilling to repair for now. Dealer I had it with last year (different dealer) is refusing to supply repair records. Have tried to get Lincoln Concierge involved without resolution. I mentioned Lincoln/Ford’s ongoing failed attempts to repair known transmission issues.

I have a 2000 F150 XL w/5.4L V8, 4×4, w/173,000 miles on it. Other than maintenance and fairly minor repairs over 24 years, it’s reliable, and just works. Five years on, no codes thrown on the OBDC II. But then again, this truck was built when they were still thinking about throwing tons of electronic circuits, wires, connectors and computers into something that starts to rust before it leaves the lot.

I purchased a new 2020 Ford F150. The truck is 3 years old and has 78,000 miles mostly highway I too it Fromm Massachusetts to Myrtle Beach SC. On the way the transmission started slipping I took it to a dealership in SC and they said it needs a new transmission at a cost of $7.400. As I have learned now it is a very controversial transmission. I need to know the law firm handling Class Action lawsuits in the Massachusetts area. Does anyone have contact information for one of these law firms?

Loud clunk when I warm remote start it causes the transmission to engage the driveshaft at the rear axle. Was told that’s a characteristic of the truck. Sometimes when I accelerate the truck doesn’t shift out of gear and just jerks back when I let off the gas. Throws everyone in the truck forward.

I’d like to know how we can get in on this too because my 2021 ford F-150 is in the shop right now trying to get a diagnostic on what’s wrong and it’s the exact same problem ls I’m hearing about PLUS the shifter is not shifting into gear. We have not heard from the dealership can’t get any help as far as updates and we have contacted quality control we have a case number was told that they will expedite our case but when we called letting them know that we can’t get any information about the status they went ahead and transferred us to the dealership for updates !!! Surprise they didn’t answer!! This is our work truck and have been waiting for them as the appointment time was a week out and now we are 9 days no work and no answers

I have a 2018 Ford Expedition Limited and have had the same problem since I bought the vehicle. I have taken it to Ford several times and they tell me they can’t replicate the problem and that the truck is fine. Now my truck has surpassed the warranty and they say I am out of luck and have to pay for repairs myself. Being a single mom with 4 kids, this is not possible and Ford should take responsibility for their faulty vehicles.

Tony
I posted earlier about this and following up. I took my F150 to dealer for diagnostic this week and the trans does need to be rebuilt. on 12-1-2023 I had the adaptive learning tables cleared and trans reprogramed (BTW, dealership did not ask for my permission to do so). I was glad this was done when they told me the truck was running perfectly after this process. From there I asked them to change the trans fluid, since I was at 80,000 and this should be done at 60,000. All that cost $417.22, which I would NOT have had done if I thought there was a chance this would not be the fix. Reality is that the ALT clearing and reprogram is the first of 3 step repair process Ford is “recommending” as a plan to fix the issue. Back to the Diagnostic today. Transmission rebuild repair will cost $4,266,67 and Ford will cover $1,706.67, which has a remaining $2,560.00 for me to cover. Add that to the useless ALT reset and reprogram and trans fluid change, I will be into this repair for a total of $2,977.22 when all is said and done. If Ford didn’t cover anything, I would have paid a total of $4,683.89. All that said, with Ford agreeing to pay what they will, my truck being out of warranty, and agreeing to this all very easily and quickly after quickly speaking with their customer care, I feel like Ford is clearly mitigating the cost to repair and this is clearly an admission of guild on their end. I am escalating my case to the next level at Ford Customer Care 1 (800) 392-3673. If you have this issue, start with this number and get something back. Hopefully we get more back when the class action suit is over.

2018 F150 V8 Coyote engine. 70k miles, transmission leaking at bulk head and slipping gears. Currently in the shop with over 900 estimate. I took the truck Back to the dealership first week after purchasing and complained transmission was shifting rough. As usual, couldn’t find anything wrong with it. Took it back to Ford this summer because the problem seemed to be getting worse and they changed the transfer case fluid. Now to December back at the garage with transmission leak. I have owned Ford F150 truck for years and I have to say this is a Lemon. With the price of vehicles these days how can Ford get away with not recalling? This is a safety concern. I was traveling on 71 is Ohio with my autistic daughter in the back when all of a sudden transmission slipped, vehicle seems to loose power and I lost 15 mphs in the middle lane of traffic going about 70 mps, needless to say I about got ran over and caused an accident. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE FORD !

Brian
I have the same issues with my 2018 Ford F 150 Platinum. The dealership told me it’s normal. When the valve box broke and the truck was having problems Ford paid 40% of the repairs because it was under warranty but wont cover the whole thing. They replaced the valve box and rebuilt the transmission and soon as i put it into eco mode everything broke down again. I wont take it to get fixed again until Ford pays for a new transmission and valve box. I lose power, jerking transmission and clunky gear shifting. The mechanic told me this was normal. I was a tank mechanic for the US Army. Tanks are clunky. $75,000 vehicles should work without issues. Ford should be ashamed.

Jonah
Mine started slipping and hard shifting at 63K right after I paid it off… a short time later a see manual wrench light came on. (But no recordable codes… now I slips and shifts from 10 to 1, 1 -4, 4 to 8. a new transmission is going to cost me 5K plus not considering the labor. Very disappointed. I’ve been the only owner of this vehicle.

Richard
We have a 2020 for explorer with 49,648 miles on it. The transmission will shift so hard down shifting between 7th and 6th gear sometimes it almost stops . I have been reading up on it and they calling it a 7/6 hard shift and the transmission needs to be replaced. Has any body else had this problem?

Jason
I have had my truck in the shop 6 times as a result of this. 65$k truck 2018 10 speed transmission. Shop has installed 2 torque converters in transmission. This truck is clunking jerking lunging! It’s very dangerous. I need help! I think total time is shop for this is over 300 days now. Pathetic situation

Kyle
I’m having same slipping, jerking, and sometimes no movement until transmission catches. During driving the truck will down shift abruptly even though my foot is on gas, causing jerking. At times it feels like the transmission or engine is going to drop out the bottom of truck! In 2015, I bought my 2018 Ford F150 Lariat 4×4 Quad-Cab color is Guard, believe it’s the 3.5L Ecoboost 10 speed transmission (10R80). Unfortunately my warranty has expired and it sounds like I’m going to be out of a lot of money to replace a transmission. Can’t really afford the huge extra cost, but for my families safety and to continue being able to pay the bills we need the transportation. So, I don’t have much of a choice or any other options! Thank you- “disappointed Ford Truck owner”!

Debbie
Transmission started slipping around 60,000 and 70,000 they drove it stayed gas additive is what it needed. Approx 90,000 miles the vehicle would not shift slipping again. They didn’t have no one available short handed it would take 3 months to repair. It cost me 5,000 dollars for a new transmission. I’m wondering did I get another 10 speed bad transmission?? How can you get away with screwing customers who truly believe in ford.

Chester
I just paid off my 2018 F150 last month which has 72,000 plus miles. I started experiencing transmission issue about a month and half ago. Symptoms were slippage, delayed in shifting and sudden hard jerks. When I’m at a complete stop it would stay in 7th gear and wouldn’t shift down to first gear and when I press the gas peddle it would just rev up in gear like it’s in neutral then slowly start to accelerate. At times when I’m around 25-45 miles an hour and press the gas peddle down to speed up to pass a car it would just rev up and not speed up then grab gear again and slowly accelerate which is very concerning. Luckily I purchased the extended the extended warranty and I contacted my local Ford dealer service department. When I spoke with the service department I told him I wanted to bring my truck in for transmission issue and started asking for my name, year truck and contact information and said he would call me once he can get me in. I asked him if he wanted to know the issue I was having to my surprise he was honest and said we know there’s been issues with the 10 speed transmission and describe all the symptoms i previously mentioned.

Joseph
2018 F150 52,367 miles with transmission issues. Slipping and gears shifting hard. Stop and can’t get going again. At dealer now. Luckily purchased extended warranty. #fordmotorcorp needs to address problem.

ARTIE
I have a 2021 GT Mustang and the transmission has slipped since day 1. The paddle shifters are useless, not working causing the engine to blowup at 14,260 miles because it would not shift.I wasn’t racing just granny shifting the car and it would not shift. Ford wouldn’t cover anything because the engine was supercharged.

I have a 2019 Ford F150XL with the 10r80 10 speed and thetransmission has gone bad. It’s slipping, shifting hard and now the truck won’t even move now. I have a 5 year payment for a truck I can’t drive or even afford to get fixed right now.

I have a 2018 Ford max Limited expedition keep 10 gears Transmission, skipping gears and when you go to switch lanes to accelerate it jumps into neutral and loses power, I’m worried about getting rear-ended accident because of it, then it gives the loud jerk when it finally kicks back into gear & no engine light is coming on. Even had the transmission fluid changed and still no change.

Mike
Same problem as every else. 2018 F150 XLT. 65k miles. Transmission slipping into neutral. Jumping between gears, clunking into 3rd gear. Ford dealer says I need a new transmission. Ford customer service says no help. To bad. 65k and a transmission needs replacement. Come on Ford. I would like to know how Tony got CS to cover.

Rachael
I bought my 2018 Ford F150 XTR 4×4 on September 30, 2023. I noticed within the first few days that the transmission was skipping 2nd and going straight to 3rd about half the time. Here we are 2 months later and I have put less than 1,000 miles on it (current odometer 67k) and it is jumping all over the place. Won’t go into 10th gear, down shifting hard, jerking me all around. Thought I was gonna die just trying to get it to the dealership. Then they tell me it’s a 4 month wait for transmission service! Like I can do anything about that?!?! I can’t exactly keep driving it, so now I get to make payments on a truck I can’t even drive?? How is this right? Come on Ford… Do better!

Sandy
I purchased a 2021 Ford Ranger in May 2021. My first Ford after owning BMWs, Hondas & Mazdas. My last car was a Mazda CX9 2007 with 250K miles. Never had issues. Fast forward to today – Monday 12/4/23. My less than 3 year old Ford Ranger with 68K miles needs a NEW transmission and they are telling me that it will be between $7-8K. I NEVER had any service lights or warnings prior to this. One week ago, I was driving on the freeway with my child and the truck started to decelerate and rev past 5rpm. I was able to get off the freeway but the truck wouldn’t go past 20mph. I was able to park it but it wouldn’t go into reverse. We were able to leave it at a Ford service center in the area but it’s located 30 minutes away from home. Not only is the cost to repair outrageous but I am also learning that they can’t work on the transmission until March/April 2024.

Tony
Same thing for me on this trans, hard shifting, while in Drive gear, engine revs like it is Neutral, skip gears, etc. Took to my local dealer and they said it was $5,500 for the trans rebuild. Called Ford CS directly and they said they would cover a large portion of my cost. Scheduled to take to dealer and get this done. FYI, Ford CS # is 800-392-3673, less than 30 minute call… I will post again after I get into the dealer to get estimate from Ford CS. They told me it will typically be 40%-60% of what the “dealer cost” is to repair. This is supposed to be significantly LESS than the $5,500 I was told so 40%-60% of a lower than $5,500 number for a new trans sounds fantastic to me:) I will post again when I get the complete estimate.

File your complaint on the NHTSA gov so we could get this issue resolved. I have a 2020 Ford Expedition Max Limited with 88K miles that is experiencing the same issues. Last year when I purchased the vehicle the issued happened here and there but now it’s becoming a biweekly thing. I travel 80 miles both ways twice a week with my 9 and 2 year old and have almost gotten rear ended so many times. I took it to Ford and they said they test drove the vehicle and didn’t find anything wrong with it as I described so nothing was done. I just filed a complaint on NHTSA gov. I think the more complaints that are filed with them, justice will be served.

We traded a 2016 f 150 with no issues for the 2018 with 10 speed transmission and have had multiple probl3ms with rough shift between 3-5 gears. And a clunk when it drops into reverse from park. Also a constant flutter to it. There are no codes when we have take it in so they keep telling us they can’t fix it. I soo wish I still had my previous truck. We own 3 Ford trucks and this one is awful. We love the 84, and the 2007. Not the 2018.

Dawn
2020 Ford 150 LTX4X4 Sport pick up. We purchase this pick up with the 100,000.00 mile waranty and we are have transmission problems. Ford will not talk to us at all for the tranmission issue. The truck shudder when shifting into upper gears and loss of power on the highway. Ford needs to step up and fix these issue before more people get hurt. We are located in Baltimore Maryland and would like to band together with other to file a law suit in our state. This is not right on any level……..

I purchased my ford raptor new in 2018 a 2017 Transmission issues jerking erratic shifting reprogramming by ford to no avail Paid Aamco Transmission $6800.00 Could have paid off truck with that Florida resident Would appreciate any compensation Thanks

I have a 2020 Ford Ranger with 28k miles on it. Transmission shifts poorly buck’s, Jerks, jumps, hesitates. Mostly between 30 and 40 mph but also feels like someone rear-ended me while stopping. Ford wants $7000 to replace since they can not fix it. A local repair shop wants $2500 to repair it.

I bought my 2019 f150 xlt and I am experiencing, hard gear shifts, the trans dropping from 10th gear to 1st gear, leaking, and I just had it serviced. Replaced the sensors on the exterior, what’s bad is I haven’t even made my first payment. My truck is in the shop for the second time and I have had it less than a month.

Chris
Bought my 2019 F-150 back in November 2022 and started to notice hard shifting in March of 2023. Brought the truck to my local dealer and was informed that it should just need a relearn done. Was informed at this point that if the relearn didnt resolve the issue then parts would be ordered as per the TSB. Brought my truck back in for the same issue in May of 2023 and mentioned that the truck was continuing to shift roughly after the initial relearn. Truck was taken for a test drive and a second relearn was completed. The issue still remained so, once again, I brought the truck back in hoping that the dealership would honour what was stated the first time and begin repair work to correct the issue. No luck. Its now been 7 months of this back and forth regarding the same issue which has now gotten significantly worse. I have now had multiple near miss accidents due to the truck hesitating during aceleration, getting stuck in higher gears when coming to a complete stop preventing proper acceletation when leaving the stop and occasionally deciding to drop from 7th to first while cruising at highway speeds. All of this has been brought to the dealers attention and still nothing has been done to resolve the issues. An extended warranty was purchased for piece of mind but it seems like the dealership will attemt to drag things out in order to run out the warranty so that the work doesnt need to be completed. So now im driving a vehicle that coule leave me stranded, or worse. Due to the ongoing issues, this “reliable” vehicle is no longer used to commute with family which is a shame as this was the original intent of purchacing.

I went to get a simple oil change. Two blocks away uphill my truck lost power.i could have got killed. I was made ad hell i assumed they had done something to my truck but i was wrong.they dashboard showed up a phrase trasmission temp 107.serviced truck on time 180000 miles it just turned.pushed it down hill let it set checked oil level and filter. My 2018 Ford F150 is having all the same complaints as everyone else. Slipping of gears, jerking and bucking when trying to shift. Loss of power……also loss of oil due to downshifting. I went to the dealer and they didn’t want to do anything or talk about it. I wonder why. I have had dozens of trucks and this is buy far the worst has far as the transmission.

Matt
If it is a known issue as it seems to be, then authorize the repairs through a recall

Elizabeth
My 2021 Ford Expedition had the same transmission issues. I was first told that maybe I was hitting a button that would cause it to basically stall or drop gears on the highway. After this happened a handful more times and some terrifying experiences with my children, I took it to the dealership in August where they attempted to rebuild it to no avail, and then said the replaced it. My expedition is still in the shop today for these issues, it’s been 3 months. My lease is up in May. I called Ford to request a buy back, it was denied. I don’t know what else I can do at this point, but I did put in a complaint to the government to look into this issue, I believe through the state highway administration with the my VIN number and contact info with a description of the transmission issues in August. All should do the same so they look into it.

joe
I have a ford 2018 f150 with a 10 speed transmission and it went bad ford wanted over 9K to rebuild it I took it to a transmission shop and they put in a Jasper 10 speed with a 3 year 100K warranty. I wrote the CEO and the COO and customer service at ford and got a blowoff from customer service stating there are not enough complaints about this transmission to do anything and they are sorry they can’ help me.My truck has only 74K miles on it and the truck is in mint condition. I have been a loyal ford customer since 1970 and they could care less I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER FORD AGAIN I AM DONE WITH THEM.

Matt
2017 Lariat transmission has officially trashed out. Had the hard shifting as well and now it needs replaced. Quoted over $7k to replace jt. This truck has lost back end, steering pump, cam phasers, and more. Awesome truck when everything worked but this is ridiculous.

James
2018 ford f150 I have owned the truck 4 months to find out the transmission is going out. 30,000 down the drain

Robert
I brought my 2019 Ranger in with the complaint of rough shifting and feeling like it was chugging. At that point I still was under my Ford warranty. They said it needed a programing update and did so. It felt the same to me but I assumed it was just a rough driving truck. I put up with it for a bit, but then brought it back. At this point I was not under the Ford warranty. Luckily I have an extended warranty. This time they replaced the transmission. It took 2 months do to inability to get parts. It is the same as when I first bought it in. I am at a loss.

Faraz
I have a 2018 f150 xlt bought brand new and is having transmission problem.

Elizabeth
Also having problems with noise and shifting. 2017 Ford f 150 king Ranch

My Ford F-150 2019 Version has been having major transmission issues. These issues are making me slow down randomly in the middle of the interstate and the vehicle isn’t functioning correctly. These issues keep the vehicle in gear and make it randomly drop out of gear multiple times per week. I have taken it to my local dealer 2 times and they have done minor fixes and it keeps happening. I just recently took it back, and they told me I have a problem with the transmission that will total just under 5 grand.

Justin
Just Bought an 2021 F150 Limited two weeks ago. Power malfunction/reduced power light comes on after driving on the interstate. Im about to dump this thing asap before its too late. Wow this is unbelievable

Jesus
Like everyone else who’s commented on this thread. Slipping gears, loss of power when on highway, hard shifting. Had I know about this issue prior, I may have gone with a different manufacturer. This is my first truck and just so down about the purchase. My dealer said a new transmission would sold this issue, but I have my doubt if newer models are facing the same issue. My truck is a F150 2017 XLT 4×4

Ray
My 2018 f150 with 40k on it has been in the ford shop 2 times in the last 6 months. First time they blamed it on the torque converter and the most recent was the pressure plate. I feel they dont want to blame anything on the transmission because of this pending law suit. Anyhow I have spent thousands the last few months and it stil isnt right. Also I read a submitted comment on this thread that stated tax payers bailed out ford when the big 3 had financial issues. Linda get your story right.. Ford did not accept a government handout. It was Dodge and Chevy that were bailed out

DAYSE
I GOT A 2019 FORD F-150 SPORTS 4X4 A WEEK INTO BUYIBG THIS TRUCK STARTER TO GIVE US PROBLEM, TOOK THE TRUCK TO OUR LOCAL DEALER DON TESTER AND THEY TOLS US THAT WAS NOTHING WRONG, BUT IT KEPT GETTING WORST AND WORST BY THE SECOND OIL CHANGE IT WAS SO BAD THEY FINALLY LOOK INTO IT , FORD SEND SOME PART TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE IT WAS A FAULTY DESIGNE SO THEY AGREE TO PAID THE DEALER TO FIX IT FOR US BUT AFTER WAITING FOR ALMOST FOUR WEEKS TO GET MY CAR BACK , THEY RETURN MY TRUCK TO US ONLY TO START TWO WEEKS LATER RIGHT BACK WHERE WE HAD STARTED , I WAS SO MAD IT HAD TAKEN 4 MONTHS SINCE THAT LAST TIME FOR ME TO BE ABLE TO GET THE TRUCK BACK INTO THE DEALERSHIP ONLY FOR THEM TO SAY NOW SORRY ABOUT YOUR LUCK THE NOISE IS NORMAL THAT IS HOW THE CAR WAS BUILT DEAL WITH IT, WE ARE A MIDDLE CLASS CITIZENS THAT WORK HARD TO PROVIDE A FUTURE TI THEIR KIDS.
