Frigidaire Minifridge Recall Issued Following Reports of More Than $700,000 in Property Damage

Frigidaire-Recall

Federal safety officials are urging consumers to immediately stop using Frigidaire minifridges, warning that faulty electrical components can short-circuit and ignite the plastic casing, creating serious fire and burn risks.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the Frigidaire Minifridge recall on July 24, following at least 26 reports of the fridges smoking, sparking, burning, melting, overheating, or catching fire.

Officials are warning that the manufacturer has become aware of at least two reports of individuals suffering smoke inhalation injuries, and property damage exceeding $700,000.

Although no fatalities have been reported, the recall is being treated as urgent due to the risk of fires spreading quickly in confined spaces where mini fridges are commonly used, such as dorm rooms, bedrooms, offices and apartments.

The recall affects about 634,000 Frigidaire minifridges manufactured in China and imported by Curtis International, covering the following model and serial number ranges:

  • EFMIS129 (excluding -B and -C models, A2001 to A2308)
  • EFMIS137 (A2001 to A2312)
  • EFMIS149 (A2001 to A2308)
  • EFMIS175 (A2001 to A2310)

The minifridges were sold in a variety of colors, including black, blue, green, white, yellow, red, pink and silver. Each unit features “Frigidaire” printed on the front, with the model and serial number listed on a label on the back.

They were available in 6, and 9-can sizes and were sold at Walmart and various other retailers nationwide, as well as online at Walmart.com and Amazon.com from January 2020 through December 2023 for between $36 and $40.

Consumers are being advised to immediately stop using the recalled mini fridges and follow the instructions at http://www.recallrtr.com/minifridge to request a refund.

The manufacturer is instructing customers to unplug the unit, cut the power cord, and write “Recall” on the front door before disposing of the fridge in accordance with local and state regulations.
