Honda Accord Recall Issued Over Power Steering Problems, Fire Risk

A recall has been issued ror more than half a million Honda Accord vehicles in the U.S. from the 2003-2007 model years, due to power steering problem that could lead to loss of control for drivers or a fire.

The Honda Accord recall is an expansion of a prior action the company announced in May, which affected some 2007-2008 Acura TL vehicles.

The problem involves a defective power steering hose, which can deteriorate and develop a leak due to power steering fluid reaching high temperatures or just high temperatures under the hood of the car.

Power steering fluid leaks can cause a loss of power steering assistance. In some cases, the company warns, the power steering fluid could leak onto a catalytic converter and cause the engine to smoke or burst into flames.

At least one engine fire has been attributed to the problem, but Honda claims that no injuries or auto accidents have been linked to the defective power steering hose.

Honda indicates that Accord owners will have to wait until 2013 for dealers to get access to the parts to make necessary repairs.

The recall affects approximately 572,000 Honda Accord V6 vehicles from the 2003-2007 model years that were sold in the United States. This is in addition to some 2007-2008 Acura TL vehicles with the same problem that have already been recalled.

Until replacement parts become available for dealerships to make repairs to the recalled Honda Accords, the company indicates that owners who suspect they have a leak should take their vehicles to their dealership for an inspection and interim repairs.

Honda states that it will begin notifying affected, registered Honda Accord owners in late October. When the repair parts are available, they will receive a second notification. Besides notification by mail, after late October Accord owners will be able to see if their vehicle is affected by calling (800) 999-1009 and selecting option 4, or by visiting the company’s website at www.recalls.honda.com.

I had the part(s) replaced under the recall on 3/28. I left the dealer, went home and parked the car in the garage of my lovely home. Ten minutes later the garage fire alarm went off and I found the car burning up along with garage and part of the house. Fortunately, I had a fire barrier and the damage to the rest of the house was minimal. It looks to be somewhat North of 100k. I went into the garage for a moment to look then got out. Face flushed throat burned. If you believe what you read, I am the only one who actually experienced a fire

I was forced to replace my defective power steering hose while I was traveling to New Mexico on a business trip (June /July 2012). In the middle of no where ,my car started smoking. Not sure what had happened, I was forced to call a wrecker to tow my car to nearest town. Once there rented a hotel and the following day, my car was towed to a shop (I randomly found). Once there rented a hotel and the following day, my car was towed to a shop (I randomly found). They had to order the part, another day in the hotel. Plus I missed two days of work. (I did not have extra money to rent a car. This caused a hardship on me, and my Power Steering Pump is now going out, due to the defective hose . I need it to be replace, I called Honda today, spoke with ERICA, she refused to pay the Honda Dealer, to look at my Power Steering and claims that Honda will not pay for it that is my problem. The problem was the hose, I would like legal help, of course I hope they pay me for the new hose and additional expense that I incurred.
