Igloo Recall Issued for More Than 1M Coolers Due to Risks of Fingertip Crushing, Amputations

Federal safety officials are instructing consumers to immediately stop using certain Igloo Flip and Tow Rolling Coolers, due to a defect in the product’s handle, which can crush fingertips and potentially result in amputations.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the Igloo cooler recall on February 13, after receiving reports of at least 12 fingertip injuries, including lacerations, bone fractures and even incidents where the fingertip was cut off.

Igloo Flip and Tow Rolling Coolers come in various color combinations, have the brand name “IGLOO” printed on the side, and feature a tow handle, which in the case of the recalled coolers, has the ability to pinch and crush users’ fingers.

The recall includes 1,060,000 Igloo 90 quart Flip and Tow Rolling Coolers sold in the U.S., 47,000 sold in Canada, as well as an additional 23,000 units sold in Mexico. Model numbers of the recalled coolers can be found in the CPSC recall notice.

The recalled coolers were manufactured in the United States prior to January 2024 and were sold at Costco, Target, Academy, Dicks and other stores nationwide, as well as online at Amazon.com, Igloocoolers.com and other websites from January 2019 through January 2025 for between $80 and $140.

The manufacture date is located on the bottom of the cooler in a circular pattern, with an arrow indicating the month and the last two digits of the year inside the circle.

The CPSC is urging consumers to immediately stop using the recalled products, and to contact Igloo for a free replacement handle.

For additional information or to contact the company, customers can reach Igloo at 888-943-5182 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, or via email at igloo90qt@sedgwick.com.
