Invisalign Invisible Braces Linked to Reports of Serious Allergic Reactions

Federal investigators have issued a warning to the makers of Invisalign for a failure to notify the FDA about potential problems with their invisible braces, which have reportedly caused some users to suffer extreme allergic reactions.

The FDA Invisalign “invisible braces” warning letter was issued last month and accuses Align Technology, Inc. of failing to pass on adverse event reports to the agency in a timely manner. Some of the complaints, which include incidents of severe allergic reactions that have required hospitalization in some cases, date back to November 2007, but were not reported to the FDA as required by law.

According to the warning letter, allergic reactions to Invisalign braces reported by users include swollen and irritated lips, sore throats, a burning sensation on the tongue, ulcerations in the mouth and swollen lymph nodes. In some instances Invisalign side effects led consumers to stop using the braces.

Federal regulations require medical device and drug companies who receive consumer complaints regarding potential side effects of their products to forward those adverse event reports on to FDA within 30 calendar days of receiving them or otherwise becoming aware of the incident.

In a response to the letter, Align Technology said in a press release that it was attempting to fully comply with the FDA’s concerns, that they are turning over all copies of documentation requested by the agency and that they want to resolve the issue “with minimal impact on the company.”

Align Technology claims that the Invisalign system has been used by more than 1.3 million people since it received FDA approval in 1998. The product line includes Invisalign, Invisalign Teen, Invisalign Assist, Invisalign Express and Vivera Retainers. It was not clear from the warning letter which Invisalign products were associated with the reported problems and which were not.

I have barely started my 2nd tray out of 45. My tongue swells up and has white bumps around the edges of it. My tongue is sensitive and painful. I get blisters on the inside of my lips which are dry and cracking. It is actually challenging to speak because my throat is so sore and my tongue is swollen making difficult to swallow. I have a slight burning sensation in the back of my throat. I have had an usual taste in my mouth which is difficult to describe but might be something along the lines of what it would taste like to suck on a musty towel. The taste just lingers constantly even after brushing my teeth and tongue. At night my mouth gets severely dry but when I take a drink of water I can barely manage to swallow it. I have been taking Benadryl and have had minor relief. I am hoping that these symptoms subside now that I have stopped using the Invisalign. At this point, symptoms are still occurring. Initially I thought that I must have been having a reaction to food. However, this morning I decided that I would fast for 24 hours to give my system a break and narrow down what might be causing it. I did not eat today and have only had water yet am still experiencing the issues. At this point, I have finallyrealized that it must be related to the invisalign. I have never had this issue prior to using invisalign. I am grateful for this site as I can see via the comments that others have had similar experiences which reconfirms my suspicions of Invisalign being the culprit. I have adhered to protocol for Invisalign care. I take out my trays when eating or drinking anything other than water. I brush my teeth after eating and prior to reinserting the trays. I clean the trays with warm water and the soft bristle toothbrush provided by the orthodontist office. These symptoms started fairly early on it just took me a couple of weeks to pinpoint what was causing the issue. I have called my Orthodontist and left a voice message but have yet to hear back from the office. I have paid over $3000 and am hoping that they will allow me to switch to braces or just refund my money.

After reading the comments posted on this page, I too have had an adverse reaction to Invisalign. I started treatment in January 2022. Since that time I have deveIoped mouth sores and swollen lingual papilla . After several visits to my PCP, dentist and Urgent care , no-one could explain what was causing these symptoms. It was only after I experiencing a severe reaction last week that I realized I was experiencing an allergic reaction to Invisalign . After wearing Invisalign for 8 hours, I experienced severe mouth burning, tingling and difficulty swallowing and lip swelling. I am a RN and I knew I was having an allergic reaction to the Invisalign. I immediately took Benadryl. I saw my orthodontist today and insisted that the buttons be removed and my treatment stopped. After what I experienced last week ,I would not attempt placing these devices in my mouth out of fear that the next reaction could be more serious. I am still experiencing mouth burning and lip swelling and it is four days since I removed the trays. Unfortunately, my orthodontist will not refund my money. There needs to be warnings placed on this medical device. Before starting treatment with Invisalign, people should be made aware of possible side effects.

I wore Invisalign for 7 months. During the entire treatment, my tongue has a burning/numbness sensation and my sense of taste was greatly impaired. My mouth was constantly irritated. Even though, my sense of taste was nearly destroyed, there were times that my mouth felt/tasted like an ash tray. I have not other description for it. My orthodontist did not take my concerns seriously. I am now wearing the retainers and am having the same issue–even worse. I am switching to a traditional retainer with the hope that my tongue and mouth will heal. I would never have elected to use Invisalign if I knew of these possible side effects.

I started Invisalign in January. 6 weeks into treatment I woke up with a circular white patch ulcer in the center of my tongue. I also felt like there was cotton in my mouth. On my next visit to the orthodontist, I showed him it and he informed me that if it didn’t clear I would need an antibiotic. I am a Registered Nurse and I felt it was candida. I tried everything over the counter to get rid of it unsuccessful. I saw my family physician and she thought it may be secondary to acid reflux. I was started on Prilosec but it did not clear. It got progressively worse and I was seen in urgent care where I was diagnosed with thrush. I completed 14 days on an anti fugal medication. It cleared the infection but I developed enlarged bumps on the side of my tongue and on top of my tongue. I consulted my dentist but he was not sure why these bumps were swollen he felt they were lingual papillae. They are so large you can see them on my tongue. I also feel them when I swallow. The raised red bumps are just where my tongue comes in contact with the Invisalign. I have been taking Benadryl with some relief. I also have tongue burning. After reading these comments, I am sure I am also experiencing an adverse reaction to Invisalign. When I committed to Invisalign, I was never informed of possible side effects.

Female 38 y.o. I’ve started Invisalign last January. I did not have any problems until the 4th mask. After three days of wearing it I started to feel strange pressures in my head and chest, an incredible and never felt before weakness. I went to the ER thinking I was having a heart attack or stroke. In the meantime I was frantic , my nervous system was out of control. All the tests were Ok. For a week I was bedridden, I took off Invisalign but initially had no connection. When I felt better I started the treatment again, but a week after the mask change I was sick again. Panic attacks at night, chest pains, digestive difficulties, visits, doctors, worry. Now I haven’t worn it for a month, but I still have some after-effects, such as reflux that doesn’t let me sleep, problems with my neck. Reading your testimonies made me feel less crazy, I didn’t know what to think anymore. There should be more awareness about these possible reactions.

2 weeks after taking out the Invisalign braces (used them for 3 weeks) I still have watery bowl movements, extreme bloating, pain in my intestines and liver and kidneys and going for an ultrasound of abdomen. Had blood work done, don’t know yet but urinalysis shows blood and protein in urine, meaning an infection is present. I am so sick, diarrhea for 5 weeks. I have tried everything I can think of including not eating. I Sure hope my doctor will help me I feel like I’m dying. Absolutely no energy! I have a severe allergy to plastic. I knew I had a plastic allergy on my skin because plastic tubing caused me to have bloody welts after a surgery. I had no idea that it would hurt me so much internally! Where were the warnings?

Lisa
Are you all also using mouthwash Mouthwashes often have a quaternary ammonia ingredient which can also be an allergen that causes these symptoms I see a few that post symptoms continue after disuse. Consider that…

I have had stomach for the last seven months. Acid re-flux at night waking me up and in the last 6 weeks having to run to the bathroom with diarrhea. I also had problems swallowing. When I finally got a blister inside my mouth the size of a quarter last week I started doing my own research because the five doctors I had seen had not helped me at all and was loosing a scary amount of weight. That is when I saw the post about these Invisalign retainers causing these symptoms and figured out what was happening to me. I am posting these symptoms to alert others reading this site, but the doctors really need to be aware of this, especially the gastroenterologist doctors. I ended up in the hospital on an IV and if I had not figured this out on my own who knows how bad it could have gotten.

62 year old male. According to the ortho DDS, 12-15 months. I am on month 12, third set of aligners, totaling 34 worn. Teeth hurt, canines won’t move, and my jaw pain is brutal. A couple teeth refuse to move. In the past 2 months I am having a reaction to the aligners with stomach and general nerve issues. I am seriously considering switch to metal to get this scam off my teeth. Invisalign Platinum provider. Terrible experience.

Maria
Was sold Invisalign through an advertisement but the dr delivered an off brand and won’t return my money.

I finished my Invisalign treatment back in March 2021 but didn’t actually attributed my symptoms and discomfort to the Invisaligns until October 2021. During treatment I felt discomfort in my Jaw, what it felt like sore and/or swollen tongue and tingling in my tongue, but I thought it was normal due to movement of teeth. Once I started the Vivera retainer, my symptoms became more acute and started to see the blister in my mouth and experiencing nausea. It is February 2022 and I am still dealing with this horrible symptoms. Just a few weeks ago, I had a abdominal episode that after doing test and CT scan, I am starting to suspect that it could be related to the adverse reaction on my mouth. Like everyone else here, my dentist doesn’t feel my issues are related to the Invisalign product; however, my primary care physician can no longer ignore the facts and is helping me research. Next I am going to a specialist to test all the Invisalign materials to confirm if indeed I am allergic to any of the components. I hope to find answers soon since this has been a hard couple of months with these unbearable symptoms. I wish there was a support group where we could share experiences and bring awareness.

On aligner 20 of 39 and have been experiencing general discomfort (despite effective teeth movement results) since the very first aligner. As of aligner 19, I began developing a swollen uvula with sore throat, this was after having experienced dry/cracked/irritated corners of my mouth for several weeks in a row. Sore tip of my tongue (the part that touches the edge of the aligner behind my front teeth). I took a PCR test to rule out covid-19 which came back negative, the swollen uvula and throat soreness seemed to subside through the first week, however, after wearing a new aligner the following week it took just a few days before my uvula was once again swollen and throat became very dry/itchy/sore again as well. It’s painful to swallow. I thoroughly clean my aligners day and night as well as my own teeth, using antibacterial mouth wash and following all of the precautions like avoiding wearing the aligners when eating/drinking and taking care not to expose the aligners to things that would degrade its composition. Any more effort than this would be unreasonable, but if that was truly necessary the orthodontist should clearly indicate the risks of not doing so. After following all of the precautions and taking the necessary care, it is clear that these symptoms are related to either the material of the aligner, its coating or perhaps saliva issues introduced by wearing the aligners. It is incredible that a doctor would recommend this product knowing the potential health risks associated with it. It’s inhuman to put a product like this in a person’s mouth and cause them to have to endure discomfort, mouth trauma, pain and health detriment for an extended period of time. I was always skeptical of wearing plastic in my mouth, but I did place my trust in the knowledge of my orthodontist and the reputation of this product, however, I feel I should have trusted my original instinct and avoided these like all hell.

My daughter has turned jaundice, had swollen glands and pain in her mouth. The orthodontist said it was something else but right now we are getting rid of the Invisalign retainer to gargling and taking antibiotics to get rid of her swelling.

I’m a 62 years young woman, healthy, non smoker, non drinker, on my 14th tray of 30. I began having an allergic reactions but equated them to having (long) covid last year. When the palpitations began almost constantly along with episodes of elevated blood pressure I began to be concern. I could not sleep at night due to sweating, and waking in a panicked state. My mouth was dry and the corners of my mouth were cracked. I prayed for answers because I was feeling like this could lead to a heart attack with the tightness in my chest and palpation getting worst. Fate caused me to not wear my invisaligns for one day. I actually forgot to put them on. I began to feel better, the palpitations subsided by at least 30%. I then searched for possible allergic reactions reported by other invisalign users and I arrived here! Thank you so much for posting because I felt so isolated and that maybe this was just in my head.

Laura
A few weeks after I started wearing my aligners I had a burning/tingling sensation on the roof of my mouth, tong and gums and was told it was sensitivity. A few months later, I stopped Invisalign altogether and continued feeling the symptoms ever since. 6 months and my teeth have shifted (and still loose) and the symptoms persist. The only relief I get is when I’m eating or drinking. This is torture.

I just returned from a visit to my doctor due to the fact that the entire inside of my mouth is swollen, my lips are dry to the point where not one product I have tried, can heal them. To the point where I am developing a red painful area from my lower lip down my chin. Red, dry, itchy, and very painful when it gets wet. I am dreading having to wear these invisalign trays for 8 hours every night for the rest of my life. I can only taste some foods and, sure, I have lost weight, because I can’t taste most foods. Eating a fine meal would be wasted on me. I eat because I need nutrition, and wouldn’t if I didn’t need to to live. The inside of my entire mouth and my lips are dry, swollen, and irritated. I can’t continue to use the trays if this is how I will be, for the rest of my life. It’s almost impossible to explain to my doctor. I literally can feel the ‘folding’ of the tissue inside my mouth when I purse my lips. It’s horrible.

It’s nice to see other peoples experiences that are similar and know that I’m not crazy even though I have felt crazy for the last 6 months. The first 2 weeks that I started Invisalign my mouth was really itchy. I mentioned the itching to my orthodontist 3 days in and said that I hope I’m not allergic to them. She said that she had never heard of anyone being allergic, but to keep her posted. She didn’t seem concerned or to really take it seriously. I kept wearing them and after a few weeks the itching went away. Fast forward to August, 3 months later. I start feeling like I maybe I’m developing allergy’s like hay fever or something. My nose is runny and I’m sneezing, but I’m not sick. Then I start feeling like I can’t breath, like someone is sitting on my chest and my breathing is restricted. My belly out of nowhere, overnight got bloated (August 22-Nov.)and stayed bloated everyday. I have notice for months that I am really anxious, for seemingly no reason. I don’t feel like myself. I don’t feel comfortable in my own skin. I have felt anxiety and depression that I have never experienced my whole life. & my PMS has been worse and worse each month. I went to two different doctors trying to figure out what was going on with me. I did not attribute any of this to Invisalign until my husband realized one day that maybe I was having an allergic reaction to them. That all of these issues occurred after using Invisalign for a few months. I was on aligner #25 when I decided to make an appointment with an allergist. And on that same day I decided to take my aligners out. For the first time in months I slept without them in. The next day I could already feel somewhat of a difference. I was not instantly all better, but I could tell a reduction in some of my symptoms. It has now been 21 days since taking them out and I would say I’m probably 30% better. I’m still not back to normal. I had my allergist appointment today. He had me do a breathing test. He said my lungs are strong and should recover. It was really hard to breath into that tube. I could tell just doing the breathing test, that I don’t have my full lung capacity. He gave me an inhaler with prednisone to take everyday for 14 days. He said I should feel a little better each day and hopefully will be back to normal after the 14 days, but that some of the respiratory problems may come back. He said he could do some skin tests using the Invisalign plastic, but that I probably wouldn’t want to continue wearing them even if the test was negative, so it may not make sense to do those tests. I agree. I can feel the difference since taking them out, so it’s pretty obvious that they are the cause. The prednisone inhaler seemed like it helped me somewhat. I started to feel like I was about 50% better. Some days it wasn’t hard to breath anymore, but than some days still were difficult. I went to see my regular dentist(not my orthodontist) although he is also an orthodontist and works with Invisalign as well. I told him about what happened, that I was having breathing issues from my Invisalign trays and that I have felt somewhat better since taking them out. That I have not been given a refund yet, but was told that I could get a partial refund. During my appointment he took care of getting my attachments off. He said that they could be effecting me as well, causing some of the allergy. He also said that after they are off, I will probably feel worse again due to how the attachments come off. They use a super cold tool which causes the attachments to become a white powder that gets all over. They were careful to have me wash my mouth several times during the process to try to eliminate it getting in my system, but of course there’s really no stopping it. Sure enough, after I got home I felt sick. It was hard to breath and I felt weak. I rested the rest of the day. The next day I still had a hard time breathing but felt somewhat better. Today, is really hard to breath. It seems I have sent myself backwards getting the attachments off, but it was definitely necessary to get them out of my mouth. I don’t know if I will need about her round of prednisone to help me start to get better again or what I should do.

I was a victim of invisilign. Since taking it out my symptoms have gotten better however I’m still not back to the thriving person/athlete I was before. I went from a thriving athlete in the best shape of my life before Invisalign then to barely being able to function as a normal human being because of my symptoms. I was actually issued an RN at work bc of my symptoms. I was unable to swallow solid food for a year, acid reflux, my throat often felt like it was closing ,brain fog, bloating, anxiety and elevated heart rate. It’s a long story but I want to share my symptoms and a glimpse of what I went through on here in case it helps anyone.

Holly
Hello! I’m wondering if there is any place where pictures are shared? I don’t have a lot of symptoms that most of you have, however the inside of my lips, and now the front of my lips, are covered in what I would describe as blisters. It started about a month ago on the inside, cleared up, and now it is a million times worse. Have cracks on the corner of my mouth too Its SO painful. I’ve been researching like crazy and can’t seem to find many pictures of allergic reactions or blisters and sores on the lips from this?!

Teresa
I am 69 year old female nurse and started Invisalign. First tray soreness in mouth which expected. Second tray my parotid glands hurt, had sore throat and headaches. On day 3 of the second tray at 10:30 in the evening started breaking out in huge hives all over, throat was tight, lightheaded and pulse rate fast. Started to feel like I was going to faint. Called 911 and popped the aligners out. I was very shaky when paramedics arrived and BP elevated. This was a near if not anaphylactic reaction. I didn’t feel right for a week. Having a hard time getting anyone to help me find out what is in these to cause such a bad reaction. Also out $2000.00. NOT a good experience

Del
Yesterday I started noticing symptoms and was wondering if it was because I lagged on cleaning them with the crystals. Guess I’ll have to call the doctor.

Claudette
I wore my Invisalign braces for about 1 1/2 years before I became allergic to them. This past summer I started to have pain in my mouth, throat, and tongue, lose of taste, and swollen parotid gland on right side. I stopped wearing the braces 9/9/2021 (4 weeks ago). I have been on two courses of prednisone. The symptoms have gotten slightly better but are still present. My allergist says it could take 6-8 weeks before the problems clear up. How long did it take for other folks to have their problems clear up? Oh, I also had a EGD and it was found that I have a non-bleeding ulcer in my small intestine. Could this be related to the braces as well?

Carl
I am hating the fact that I have to type these comments. I am in the middle of the treatment with about 6 months to go and yesterday I had the worse break out yet. I’ve already been having fatigue issues, dry mouth, some eye focus problems but never would have guess it was with my braces. I put a new tray in before bed the night before last and I woke up to my neck swollen, the entire half side of my body that I slept on swollen including my face – baggy eyes. Restricted breathing, brain fog and a slight cough. It was the worse reaction I’ve had in a while. I’ve noticed it doesnt happen so bad with every tray but this one I actually rinsed and brushed clean and it stll gave me a reaction. I am hesistant to put these things back in my mouth. Going through Covid and now this – i dont care about the money I just want my health back. I wanted a good smile but since ive had these in my mouth I definitely suffered from a lot of fatigue.

Karen
Blistering lips inside of mouth, cracks and drooling (non stop) on corners of the mouth. Dry mouth and burning. I have tried for 3 months for the dentist to remove the buttons to no avail. In constant pain

Shelly
I have been in treatment since March 2021. For the past couple of months, my tongue feels funny, like it has a film over it. At my recent dentist appointment for cleaning and to receive my next set of aligners, I asked my dentist to check up a red bubble enlargement on the top of the right side of my tongue. They recommended seeing an oral surgeon. Of course now I am freaking out! A month prior, I had a mouth full of canker sores that have since disappeared, however this little bump on my tongue has me freaked out along with waking up with a very dry mouth. Has anyone else experienced anything like this with Invisalign?

Melissa
I had issues with severe dry mouth from the beginning. I was hoping that when I got used to the Invisalign it would get better. But it got progressively worse and I developed additional symptoms …dry mouth, sore tongue and roof of mouth (feels like a burn), red gums and inside of mouth, nausea, headache, fatigue, feeling feverish. Just an all over unwell feeling. I mentioned it at my Ortho. appointments and was basically brushed off. I was able to make it through treatment but when I got the retainers it was intolerable. I’m very disappointed that I wasted a lot of money. I can’t wear a retainer so my teeth will go back to where they were to start with.

Male 55 years, fit, healthy, no prev doctor treatments. I snowboard, mountain bike and run amongst other activities. First day of invisalign I noticed that having my first meal (about 5hrs after initial fitting) that my taste sensation was reduced. First night sleep a bit restless and sweating up which I would have expected maybe from some mouth soreness getting used to the invisalign. I woke at 3.00am with my glands so swollen that my skin was stretched tight around my whole neck and breathing was somewhat restricted. I removed the invisalign immediately and noticed a reduction in swelling within the hour and almost gone in 6hrs. I then looked on line and have found several sites that report issues. I was going to try them again in the daytime tomorrow though after reading these comments no longer feel that would be the right choice. Chemicals in the mouth for 22hrs a day does not seem to be real smart practice. Just posted this to keep everybody aware of issues.

david
I had to stop using Invisalign after 27 days due to multiple health issues: After 15 days, I started having chest pain: By Day 17, it was esophageal and I had discomfort swallowing. By day 24; I was dizzy, light headed, couldn’t focus, reading and small objects of focus became a bit blurry. By day 26, I thought I was having a heart attach: I went in for an EKG (all good). They had me drink a numbing agent for my esophagus (to see if that was where the pain was coming from and it was). I was diagnosed with GERD and given Omeprazole / Prilosec (which I did NOT take!). I was told it was stress related and that I needed to be calm. I am not stressed and I have always been healthy so this just didn’t make sense to me. I did a little searching online and found this website and see several comments describing my symptoms. I then found the name of the plastic Invisalign uses (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate & 1.6-hexanediol); in which chemicals like formaldehyde and lithium aluminum hydride are used in its production. With that all said, I took the trays out 36 hours ago and am feeling better. Went to my Homeopathic Chiropractor yesterday for a detox agent. I am hopeful I will have 100% recovery soon. Invisalign really needs to share the potential effects of the use of their product, with their customers. I could have stopped its use 2 weeks ago if I had been informed. It would have saved time worry, time, medical bills, travel expenses and of coarse, my health.

Lori
I’ve been using Invisalign for about 2 months. Right away I noticed excessive dry mouth, sore tongue, I’m getting cuts from the plastic and I’ve lost my sense of taste and smell. I woke up in the middle of the night choking and unable to breathe and was rushed to hospital with a severe asthma attack. I had no idea what caused it until I found this site. I have blurred vision which I couldn’t understand either. It breaks my heart to read these comments. We were all so hopeful to start these treatments only to be lied to and poisoned in the process. I’m grateful to you all for speaking out. Otherwise I may never have put the breathing difficulties and other symptoms down to the Invisalign. I did tell my dentist about the cuts and swelling and lack of taste and smell but she ignored it. Why does the FDA not have more power then this? Invisalign should have to pay for this!

John
I started getting sick three days after I started invisalign. Sore throat, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, cold and hot sweats, Tests for COVID and strep came back negative. Took out my trays.

J.
Been suffering with this for 2 years but so so painful to take off at this point also even broke/ shattered a root canal that dentist replaced at his cost. I have tried several times to end treatment only to be ignored or be treated very uncomfortably. I have severe neck and back pain sleep very little. My face all left side nose, eye and ear hurt almost constantly. Vision in left eye has changed. My taste and smell is hardly there anymore what is taste terrible I can no longer tolerate the taste of meat. I have lost 70 lbs. I pray for the day this thing comes off! I have also broke many of my teeth from the constant grinding in which I have paid for those fillings! Maybe this does work for some but this has been this worse nightmare for me! This is the short story of it much of it being untold. Maybe look it rapid braces or another alternative? I would not suggest this after my experience, but goodness I would hope this don’t happen to many! I still do not feel it right for them to make us tough it out! As a single mother this has been a very scary experience one I’m still questioning:(

Wow… I am on 9 of “17” and all I can say is that there is something “off” about all of this. I began having issues after the 3rd or 4th. My issues are swollen eyelid especially on my weaker eye, dry itchy skin around my nostrils, foul smell from my nostrils, Roof of my Mouth is ITCHY all night… sore stomach, sharp shooting pains in my head, cough, feels like something is “stuck” in my airway, coughing attacks after waking up feeling like I had breathed in carbon monoxide or something all night long…. As someone who has never had any health problems, work out regularly, healthy diet, non smoker, non drinker… this is clearly something to do with the treatment. I look pale, my eyes look beyond tired. The #1 sign something is wrong is my lack of motivation and willpower. I’ve become so lazy I don’t workout, I have no appetite, when I don’t wear them for 3-6 hours I start feeling normal again… I feel a “micro sweat” like a permanent panic or anxiety… especially on the forehead, almost feverish, and my hair line has tingling sensations all day long. My pre-existing joint injury that lead to poor circulation in my right foot has WORSENED. Definitely reaps havoc on our immune systems for some reason… should be thoroughly investigated before it gets more people irreversibly sick.

Vanessa
Hi everyone, I apologize in advance for if my grammar is not great because I’m French. I started invisalign less than a month ago and after only few days I experimented some sort of migraines and a cough. My stomach was bloated. I started to feel extremely tired and a bit down and though it might be the flu. After 2 weeks I had a severe episode of vomiting with tangling feeling in my hands, feet and legs. My mouth and tongue were numbed. I had at the same time an awful migraine… thought it was a nasty virus. Was pretty happy about the nausea… in a week I have lost 6.7 pounds but can barely hold a soup. I went to the doctor when I was coughing continuously some infected mucus and barely could walk without feeling dizzy (I haven’t seen a doctor in a decade. I don’t smoke. Don’t drink. I practice running and I eat a very healthy diet)…. the doctor thought it was a flu who degenerated into a bad infection. He gave me under a strong antibiotic. I started to feel better but the feelings of nausea was still strong. The cough and the shortness of breath still present but the fever went away. Two nights ago I felt like dying in my bed. Another round of dry asthmatic cough and instinctively I removed my Invisalign’s… only to notice that… my cough stopped immediately. I waited a bit and everything seemed to calm down. I did wake up every night after 4 hours of sleep. The next day my nausea was gone and I could restart to eat again. This things is a straight poison… I’m glad I found your website, it seems that a lot of info about Invisalign are hard to find.

Marcia
First 3 week were fine. Then I woke up on a Sunday with what felt like was a hair in back of my throat. It progressed from there. I finally had it and took a flashlight to my mouth and was shocked when I saw huge white bumps on the back of my tongue–thats what was causing the discomfort. I contact my doc and gave me some anti fungal mouth rinse but it isn’t helping. I took out the aligner for 2 days and it did get better. Hoping that I was crazy or maybe had a touch of a cold or something, today I put my #4 in and a couple hours later the feeling in the back of my throat is BACK! SO MUCH MONEY WASTED! Never in a million did I think I’d have this experience, but when you really stop and think– You shouldn’t have this foreign plastic in your mouth for hours and hours.

Donna
I too was excited to use the Invisalign to have a pretty smile. After having them in for ONLY five days I suddenly experienced pain radiating up my right jawline and felt HUGE swollen gland just suddenly swell up. The entire right side of my jaw was so swollen you could not distinguish my jawline. Called dentist..he said go to emergency dept. Was given antibiotics. Next morning after having been on antibiotics same thing occurred this time the left side of my jaw blew up so swollen and tender it was scary. Dentist saw me that day and said I was so swollen it looked like mumps ! But dentist said knew it was not mumps. . Was put on even stronger and higher dose of antibiotics. Saw a different dentist who said it was his opinion that it was from an allergic reaction to the plastic aligners. All my lymph nodes in neck are swollen. Stopping treatment. Wish I had researched and found this site sooner.

I am 57 years old and decided I wanted a pretty smile. I was told I would need to do Invisalign for 11 months. I was 6 months in when I started having severe headaches, ringing in my ears, swelling in lower lip, nervousness (hands shaking), and jaw pain. My lower front tooth became loose and I feared that I may lose the tooth. I then noticed gum recession at the 2 lower front teeth, which I did not have prior to Invisalign. My dentist told me that it was going to happen anyways, at some point. Needless to say, it got so bad that I had the buttons removed from my teeth and discontinued the Invisalign. I then had to go to a surgeon to repair the receded gums – $2000.00 out of pocket cost. Invisalign – $5000.00. I like many others came to the conclusion that my health was much more important than the pretty smile. My advice to others: DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND RESEARCH…..READ REVIEWS (Good & THE BAD). I have to wonder if moving the teeth in such a short amount of time, along with the plastic in your mouth every day for 22 hours a day is just plain wrong! Traditional braces move the teeth over a span of 2-5 years?

I actually tried smile direct aligners and after wearing them for Less than a month I noticed swollen glands, a dry cough, and sore throat. Apparently smile direct uses the same materials. I just spent $2000 and I cant use them anymore. I am very upset about this. I’ll call tomorrow to see how I can be accompdated. Thanks everybody for sharing your experiences

Has anyone suffered from nausea, dizziness, sometimes. My daughter has been on Invisalign for 2 years and after the first month I had to take to hospital. No one can help, so recently I suspected allergy to the plastic. She has lost considerable 116lbs to now 97lbs she is 5’5″ over 2 years. She is a person who loves her steak and potatoes. We thought greasy foods were the culprit but now it’s basically any food or no food she is naseated. She takes off Invisalign so she can be comfortable.

If you are thinking of the clear aligner trays, please reconsider! I wore them for 6 weeks and it’s been a week now and I am still feeling some effects from it. It started with slightly swollen, sore red lips, dry mouth and throat, as well as a tingly feeling on my tongue. I just figured it was me getting used to it. I continued to wear them with the minor issues, but the throat discomfort started to get worse and I was coughing some too. My throat got a lil sore towards the end of the sixth week with some swelling. I went to bed that night and woke up to swollen lymph nodes under my chin and in my neck. I also felt like my throat swelling was worse and had some trouble swallowing. I removed them that morning and the swelling went down fairly well over the next few days, but still flares up sometimes. I also developed shortness of breath, wheezing and feeling like I have a band around my chest with some coughing. It is an awful feeling. It can be hard to do physical activity and still is sometimes. I’m a pretty active person too. It also causes anxiety, sleep problems, blood pressure and heart rate changes. I’m hoping that this all eventually goes away. These things should be illegal. There is no safe thin plastic to leave in your mouth like this! Please do traditional braces or keep the smile that you have. Your quality of life is way more important!

I started using aligners From smile direct approximately one month ago and I started to develop severe dry mouth and sores on the inside of both cheeks This was probably due to the aligners being too Sharp and were cutting into my cheek resulting in open sores The pain and discomfort in my mouth made eating unbearable. My lips became swollen and having a simple conversation was almost impossible without slurring. I stopped using the aligners but the symptoms became more dominant and more unbearable. Due to the coronavirus seeing a dentist was almost impossible Until it became serious. I was examined and told I had an allergic reaction to the aligners and open sores from a poor fit. I developed an infection in my mouth as well I was given an oral mouthwash with an antihistamine and lidocaine for the pain. I’m praying this helps but as of now I do not see much improvement. I will not use them anymore and I am requesting a full refund

During my Invisalyn treatment I had tiny ulcers on my tongue. I finished the treatment and am now using the retainers. However, I still get the ulcers and now have a somewhat salty taste in my mouth. Are others experiencing the same? Any ideas or suggestions?

Samantha I am so glad I saw your post! I have felt like I have been going nuts but your experience is so close to mine….the first few weeks were fine…pain but as one would expect from braces. Then I started feeling rundown and just off and then for the first time in my life I had a panic attack…my anxiety is near constant but the thing that really started to freak me out was the swallowing…it got to the point where after just a couple bites of even eggs I couldn’t swallow anything except water and even that got hard….nothing is swollen and all structural tests and blood work is normal, normal chest expat, normal ekg…this is the only new thing I have introduced. Also have headaches, neck pain, racing heart, chest pain and heaving breathing etc. I stopped wearing them 2 days ago and by today I was able to eat a fairly normal meal. I am going to leave them off for a few more days and if I continue to feel better, no more of this for me!

CANCER? I am 47 years old, I have been wearing invisalign for two years, just had my first endoscopy and the results came back with gastric intestinal metaplasia (pre-cancerous lesions that puts people at a low risk for stomach cancer). I am questioning if the chemicals in invisalign swallowed in saliva cause this?

Anna
Hi, during first round of invisilign I developed extreme fatigue, gut problems, irritable bowl syndrome, my nose was blocked like from allergy I had to take Zirtek all the time, had to be a strict fodmap diet. Than I took them off, my health got better. Than after wearing just overnight retainers my teeth shifted back and I had to order new Invisalign and now I wear them again and all my gut problems and blocked nose are back(((

So glad to find this page! I starting getting dry mouth initially, that turned into excessive water consumption, sore throat, feeling that something is stuck in my throat that just kept getting worse. I went to the Urgent Care thinking that I had strep (Negative). then because I had gastro issues my family doc that sent me to get an EGD – nothing there. On to ENT after a barium swallow and video swallow, still nothing! My mother has thyroid issues so I was next sent to and Endocrinologist but that all checked out OK. He suggested it might be sjogren’s. When I started to look into that I see all the dental link and then is hit me… It’s the Invisalign ! So what do I do? Stop treatment in the middle, i guess. Can’t imagine I get any of the costs back, but I sure have dished out a lot in co-pays and deductibles that were not covered my by insurance. I did read the fine print and only saw a reference to some may get a sore throat but Sjogrens?

OMG. I wish I would have seen these comments sooner. The chapped bleeding lips are the least of my symptoms. I have had a horrible cough for months, feeling of fluid in my chest. Since I started my treatment I have had horrible trouble chewing my food or swallowing any kind of medicine. Yesterday i couldnt even swallow scrambled eggs. I feel like Im choking. Tisay its hard to even swallow saliva. My throat and tongue are horribly swollen, to the point that its hard to breath. I am having anxiety and panic attacks. My tongue is burning/tingling. Some nights I wake up gasping for air. Now the latest is chest pain! Im 35, I workout everyday and eat healthy. Ive never been sick really. My EKG came back abnormally and now I have to see a Cardiologist at 35. I literally cant even work this week because i feel like im dying. I asked my Orthodontist about this months ago and he claims hes never heard of such a thing.

I’ve recently started my Invisalign treatment December 3 2019 and now almost 2 months in I’ve been experiencing anxiety disorder, heart palpitations, and tingling in my left arm. I’m 36 and never seen a doctor in my life for any health concerns I’m very health conscious with the food I eat and exercise regularly I’m a none smoker and none drinker. So when these issues arise I knew automatically what it was, I’m going in to see my orthodontist to explain these issues today to see what is his response.

Oh my God! I am so glad I found this. After about a month using Invisalign I started to get constant sore throats. Then dry uncontrollable coughs. Initially I went to see my doctor and he said probably just a cold. But it continued and I got HUGE swollen lymph node in my neck which he insisted I get biopsied. It came back negative but I continued to be ill. I am beyond miserable and cannot sleep well at night due to coughing and throat so sore I feel like there is a knife stuck. I asked the doctor if it could be the Inivisalign and he said no. However I did a test and wore nothing for 3 days. My sore throat almost vanished and cough improved. I have 3 months left. I hate to have wasted all this money but I don’t think I can go on.

I’m currently on aligner 14 of my invisilign treatment and although I am not experiencing some of the mentioned above allergic reactions; i have severe TMJ problems that have never been present before aligners. I’m clenching, my massater muscles are in spasm, unbearable neck pain that has moved into my shoulder and arm now. I have had to have 60 units of Botox to just relax my jaw muscles. My dentist refuses to believe that it is the Invisilign causing the spasms. Is anyone experiencing this type of reaction?
