iPhone Fire Lawsuit Alleges Apple Smartphone Exploded, Causing Severe Burn Injuries

Problems with lithium-ion battery failures have resulted in a number of similar lawsuits in recent years, involving allegations that defective designs can cause devastating burn injuries, fires and property losses.

A Florida woman has filed a lawsuit against Apple, alleging an iPhone exploded and caught fire while resting on her bed, causing flames to spread, which left her with serious injuries and property damage.

The complaint (PDF) was originally brought by Donyale Swann in Florida Circuit Court on June 17. It names Apple Inc., Apple South Asia (Thailand) Ltd., Huizhou Desay Battery Co. Ltd., T-Mobile South LLC and T-Mobile US Inc. as defendants. The case was removed to the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida on July 23.

Swann claims the fire was caused by defects in the iPhone’s design, manufacture or warnings, resulting in excruciating burn injuries, permanent bodily harm, pain and suffering, scarring, disfigurement, emotional distress and other long-term damages.

Lithium-Ion Battery Risks

Although iPhones are generally considered safe, they rely on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that can pose a serious fire risk when damaged, defective or exposed to excessive heat.

One potential failure is known as thermal runaway, a chain reaction in which an internal short circuit, manufacturing defect or heat-management problem causes the battery temperature to rise uncontrollably. The process can generate extreme heat, flames and flammable gases within seconds, sometimes without any advance warning.

Similar battery failures have prompted prior product liability lawsuits, including a claim filed earlier this year alleging a defective Samsung smartphone experienced thermal runaway and caused severe burn injuries.

iPhone Fire Lawsuit

According to the complaint, Swann purchased the new iPhone from a T-Mobile retail store in Orlando and never altered or modified the device after taking ownership. The complaint alleges she had read and understood the warnings and instructions provided with the phone, which was being used in an intended and reasonably foreseeable manner on June 25, 2024, when it suddenly caught fire.

The lawsuit claims the iPhone remained in substantially the same condition as when it left the defendants’ control, and that defects in its design, manufacture or warnings caused the fire and resulting injuries. Swann alleges she suffered permanent bodily injuries, scarring, disability, mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life and substantial medical expenses after the incident.

Swann maintains the defendants failed to design and manufacture the iPhone with adequate safety features, failed to properly test the device and failed to warn consumers about the risk that it could overheat, ignite or explode during normal use.

The filing raises allegations of strict product liability, manufacturing defects, defective warnings and instructions, design defects and negligence. It seeks compensatory damages for Swann’s injuries and other losses.

Lithium-Ion Battery Lawsuits

As reports of lithium-ion battery failures and thermal runaway events continue to emerge across a wide range of consumer devices, product liability attorneys are investigating claims for individuals who suffered burn injuries, fires or other losses allegedly caused by defective rechargeable batteries.

A growing number of heated insole lawsuits allege rechargeable foot warmers contained defective lithium-ion batteries that overheated, ignited or exploded during ordinary use or while charging. Consumers claim the defects resulted in severe burns to their feet and lower legs due to the manufacturers’ and distributors’ failures to adequately warn consumers.

Similar litigation has also been filed over portable power banks, with plaintiffs alleging defective battery packs sold through major retailers overheated and ignited during normal use or while charging. Many of the lawsuits claim the products caused residential fires, extensive property damage and serious personal injuries.
