Jardine Babies R Us Crib Recall Expanded

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced yesterday that Jardine Enterprises is expanding their Babies ‘R’ Us crib recall which was originally issued in June 2008. An additional 56,450 cribs are being recalled, bringing the total number of cribs which could pose a risk of entrapment or strangulation to infants and toddlers to over 375,000.

The wooden cribs contain slats that can break, creating a dangerous gap in which a baby could get stuck, fall out of the crib or strangle themselves.

All of the Jardine cribs were sold at Babies R Us, Toys R Us, KidsWorld or Geoffrey Stores throughout the United States since January 2002 for between $150 and $450.

The first Jardine baby crib recall was issued on June 25, 2008 for 28 different models of cribs, involving approximately 320,000 cribs. The action was taken after the manufacturer became aware of at least 42 incidents where crib slats and spindles broke, creating a potentially life-threatening hazard. At least four of the reports involved cases where babies became trapped in the gaps created by the broken cribs.

Since then, an additional 19 reports of problems with the Babies R Us Jardine cribs have been received by the U.S. CPSC, leading to an additional recall for three more models sold since March 2004, including:

  • Model DA715BC – Dark Pine Olympia Lifetime with Date Code: 2/04 – 1/07
  • Model 0108L00 – Antique Walnut Capri Single Crib with Date Code: 7/06 – 11/07
  • Model 0308C00 – White Capri Lifetime Crib with Date Code: 12/05 – 11/07

Out of the new reports where the crib slats broke, 9 of these incidents occurred while the infant or toddle was in the crib. One report involved a 22 month old child who fell through the gap, but the U.S. CPSC indicates that no injuries have been reported.

Issues with crib safety have resulted in the recalls of millions of cribs in recent years, including one of the largest crib recalls in U.S. history for nearly 1.6 million Delta cribs in October 2008. That recall was issued due to problems with safety and spring pegs, which were found to allow the drop side of the crib to disengage creating a dangerous gap that killed at least two babies.

In December 2008, an investigative report published by the Chicago Tribune suggested that the Delta crib recall could have been issued years earlier if incidents in 2002, 2004 and 2005 had been properly tied together and investigated.

In 2007, the U.S. CPSC indicates that they changed the way they handle safety complaints, allowing them to better identify patterns among every safety complaint.

Babies r us only pay 25 for a recall crib This is crazy

I am furious , I have not done anything or reached out to any one to see about a refund or new crib . I don't think ill be going going for the recall because it's nothing compared to the price paid .. we expected to use this crib for new babies in our family but now we can't as I barely found out its not safe . I'm very disappointed in both companies.!!!

I received this crib for my grandson in 2011 as a gift and just researched and found out it is on the recall list...what do I do?

  • LaceyJune 26, 2014 at 8:46 pm

I just received a Jardine crib as a gift. It is brand new however it's one of the recalled cribs and they wont do anything for me because it's over 10 years old. I'm so upset, I was laid of last year and that is why my friend brought this for me now I have nothing and they wont do thing.

I got online to try to find the side rails so that we could convert the Americana 4-in-1 crib to a full-size bed. We purchased the bed in 2009. I am sick to my stomach reading the comments posted about how BRU and Jardine have handled this - wow, what a disgrace. I guess the bed is now just kindling, so much for saving it for future grandchildren. Sign me up for a lawsuit

I just found out the crib I purchased in 2007 ( Olympia 4 in 1 crib) was recalled. Haven't contacted anyone yet. But from what I'm reading it seems not too much is being done about the recall. What should we do from here?? I say lawsuit!!! The crib was very expensive not to mention the matching dresser we bought as well.

I am in exactly the same situation as the rest of you. The cherry crib was used for 1 week with first grandchild now we find out its recalled and they want me to pay 100.00 for a crib after I use their 69.00 voucher that I can go to walmart and buy for 120.00, They are making money off of us! they had me cut up a brand new crib with the promise of getting a new crib that I could have at least used[Show More]I am in exactly the same situation as the rest of you. He stated we are only giving a 65 dollar voucher to buy there product. What the hell are they thinking??? I know my crib is used but 65 dollars is not acceptable. They said sorry we can't do anything. A crib only have a life span of 10 years. I told the manager that you made a faulty crib and its recall. Now you are going to give me a 65 dollars voucher to buy there crib plus I have to put in my money! This is ripoff and and they need to be sued! I can't even resell or give this crib away. What if I don't have money to buy another crib! Someone needs to do something about this! Shame on Baby rus!

I called 5 times and printed out (AND STILL HAVE) all the paperwork which NEVER MENTIONS NOR WAS I TOLD that I would have to pay $$ towards a recalled crib. WHO THE FUCK DOES THIS AND IS STILL IN BUSINESS. WE NEED A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST JARDEEN AND BABYSRUS WHO ARE STILL SELLING THE ORIGINAL CRIBS BY THE WAY! Anyone with information on how to contact someone who I can get in contact with for a lawsuit please e-mail me! Thanks...Doug

We too are Jardine furniture scam victims... while paying the extra money for the complete furniture set - armoire, changing table/dresser, and crappy crib we are now stuck with mis-matched furniture and a lesser-quality crib offer. Why is this allowed?

But being the responsible parents we are and wanting our baby to be as safe as can be, we participated. Seems they are telling everyone these days the same thing when we call to complain of the color and/or type of crib replacement that was received. We had a nice white stylish crib that was part of the recall... so we sent in the required hardware and only days later received an email that our new crib was en route. I was elated I heard back so quickly. About week later, we received our new crib and were shocked to find out it was a cheaper crib in a walnut color. Like many others, we had a room full of matching furniture... so an all-white room and a walnut crib just wasn't going to fly. Had I known the replacement wouldnt be the same color, I would have opted not to participate in the recall. Upon contacting Jardine, they said there was only one color and style crib manufacturered for the recall and when I asked them to send back our white crib's hardware, they said they could not because the crib was part of a recall and it would be illegal for them to return hardware to a recalled crib. She then proceeded to tell me she will have a supervisor call me on the matter. This conversation took place a few hours ago and I am awaiting the supervisors call... however after reading all of these complaints online, I'm not expecting much change in outcome. And for those pp who were told they should just paint the crib... really??? Paint it?! So not only do we spend $400 on a white crib that we can't use anymore, we have to spend our precious time sanding and painting the cheap $100 walnut replacement??! Not only that... if the paint job isn't done properly, our baby can chew on or peel off the paint and eat paint chips! How dare they make such a hazardous suggestion! I really don't know how Jardine is allowed to get away with any of this.

Coppin on 5 August 2011 that wood easily peeled off with the babies teeth. I also wonder if any child choke from that. Additionally the cribs were easily prone to scratches on every day normal use. What dismal quality for $399, we spent $800+ on theses on dangerous and fragile cribs. I think a class action lawsuit is feasible and hope either Babies or Toys R Us stores choose their suppliers more carefully. I would need to receive some info whether I should choose to wait for an action lawsuit or receive two shoddy unrecalled cribs which I no longer truly need.

Fans a blowing, windows open it was unbearable - even the neighbors complained! Contacted BRU to remove and after threatening to call local news stations they removed it and replaced with the white Jardine 4-1 crib and matching set. No smell thank god! All was well until I was contacted by BRU due to a recall. Got the kit, dismantled the bed, and had to purchase another bed for my son to sleep in. Nothing matched. After years of going back and forth - contacted Jardine and they said they would send or give voucher for a walnut 2-1 crib. Seems like Jardine is done and is just giving what they have left away, even if it is an inferior product. "Something is better than nothing mentality". Overall, Jardine makes shoddy products - hence the "stain smell" from Vietnam and the cheap wood that lead to massive recalsl. Sadly, it probably cost them $30 to make a crib in Vietnam, only to resell said crib in America for $399. Is there anything we can do? If you find out, let me know.

Not to mention the color selection doesnt match the rest of the set. I have heard of recalled cribs sending vouchers for you to pick but for this company to not even give you an option and send you some cheaper version is not fair. Have contacted both babies r us and jardine and they pretty much blew it off and say, "be thankful your getting a new crib four years later". I dont care how many years old it is, we purchased it under the impression it would be used for many years and with many babies (hence the whole idea of 4 in 1!). Jardine should be ashammed of their costumer service and do a better job meeting consumers needs. After all, they are the ones who made a defective crib!

Obviously the replacement crib was not the same style or the same color as the model we had originally purchased. When I mentioned this, all I got in return was "Be thankful you got anything in return!" To me this was a little ridiculous as we spent money for a specific color and style of crib and were given a replacement that was not really a replacement at all. It is like trading a Mercedes in for a Kia and being told, "Hey, be glad you have a car!". I have left messages with the ext. 10419, but don't really expect that anyone will be calling me back. I also called Babies R'Us and they told me that they are just the distributor and that my problem is with Jardine.

Well, after reading all of these horrible stories and even reading that they have a F rating, I am very concerns. I thought that the replacement crib would be the one that you originally bought, but rebuilt to fix the recall on it. But, after reading that they send you a crappy walnut 2-in-1, I am not very happy and will be very mad if I get the same one everyone else is getting because I bought the black 4-in-1. I emailed them with my concerns on the things that I have read, the crib replacement, the voucher I've read about, etc. I also told them that I have read that they have horrible customer service, and that they have F ratings, etc and that if they did not help me with my problems ASAP that I was going to report them to BBB. I would gladly be apart of the lawsuit if anyone needs me.. I want this to be solved NOW! My son is 10 weeks old, he will be 15 pounds in probably another month or two.. and he will be too big for his bassinet.. I do not want a crappy 2 in 1 WALNUT colored crib that is poorly made... I want the 4-in-1 BLACK crib that I originally bought and now I would much rather it be from another COMPANY and definitely not Jardine.

Really? Who are they being unfair too? I will no longer shop in their store and suggest you don't either. I can find everything I need online through Walmart and Target for the same price. In fact, I purchased a perfectly good crib from Target that same afternoon for a really good price, and sold this crib still in the box to my neighbor who didn't have one, and couldn't afford to pay full price for a new one.

Our baby just turned 4 and we were to convert the toddler bed into the full size, bought a new box spring, mattress, and frame for it. When we went online for instructions , we found out it was recalled. I never got a word from BRU ! Not only did we have to stop using immediately, our baby now had to sleep on a mattress on the floor. While taking apart we noticed the rails were in fact splintering apart and saw how this could potentially impale my toddler. I sent the parts back to Jardine for the recall, in agreement that they would give me a voucher for BRU for the highest amt. that was charged in store for my product. At this moment i am happy I am getting rid of this thing before she can actually jump on it and get stabbed going thru it. A week and a half later, I received a fedex package in the mail containing a low priced walnut baby crib. I don't have a baby or a walnut bedroom set...and I paid the highest price possible to have this product in black, not to mention convert to a full bed ! Jardine could not be more ignorant about this and have actually advised me that the splintering recalled bed that i returned the parts for 'was fine to use as a bed', and the crib was all that they were offering. I will continue to seek justice, and if there is a class action lawsuit I would be more than interested. I am very upset, have cooperate complaints with toys r us, and soon plan on contacting my state representative. My little girl is still on the floor.

I just found out about the recall on my daughter's crib about 3 weeks ago. In the process of us moving, we couldn't find the conversion set to change the crib into a toddler bed. In the process of us moving, we couldn't find the conversion set to change the crib into a toddler bed. So I went online to look for it. Well, that's when I found out there was a recall and that they no longer sold the conversion set because of the recall. I did the whole recall process online and they emailed me a shipping label. I shipped the mattress support plates and bolts only, as well as the labels on the crib showing date of manufacture and Item # and the personal information form (name, address, crib id #, and signature) to Jardine on 5/18/10. (Yeah, my daughter had to sleep in a pack and play for 2 weeks, but she survived.) They received it 5/20/10 and emailed me the voucher 5/24/10. I couldn't find any crib that I liked at the BRU store, but I did find a very nice convertible crib online that was much cheaper than anything in the store and it had great reviews. When I called the online BRU they did inform me that they would not accept the voucher for an online purchase. However, when I went to the actual BRU store, I was told that if I found a crib online they would give me a credit if I brought in the packing slip and the voucher. I ordered the crib online on 5/25/10 and it was delivered on 5/28/10. So check with your local BRU to see if they can do the same. From shipping the crib pieces to Jardine to a new beautiful crib was less than 2 weeks for us. Not a bad experience for us. I do realize that it is 2 years after the original recall, so I'm sure they are not getting flooded with calls and complaints which expedited our process.

I never really had any issues with our crib..of course, until my daughter got her arms and leg stuck in the slats and she was so upset that she kept twisting to get free..which only ended up hurting her more. I was pretty annoyed by this and it was more by happen stance that I even had found out about the recall. It had been when I called to file a complaint that I came across it on google. I was pretty happy to see it could be sent back. I'm fortunate, I suppose, I had a pretty easy time with the return. It was annoying to have to deal with it in the first place, but once I had all the pieces needed for the return, I sent it off and my voucher was in my email before the end of the week. FYI, to those parents who are frustrated with the return process. You DONT have to return the whole crib..make sure to read the instructions. You only have to return the mattress supports and the bolts. I thought the same thing at first. I'm glad I didn't know about the recall until recently, since Jardine had so many issues with dealing with it correctly. Overall, I would have preferred cash or the ability to spend the voucher the way I wanted. It's true that if you don't spend the full amount you're essentially throwing away money. We just went ahead and purchased a new crib with the voucher and went with the Babi Italia, Eastside Lifetime crib. It's beautiful and solid wood. Also a bonus is that BRUS was running a 20% off sale and we were able to combine the coupon and the voucher. So now we have a lovely crib that we'll use for our next baby. I heavily researched this brand and crib so not to have the same problems again. I wish Jardine and BRUS would have allowed us to purchase the cribs online, there are so many more choices there..and that Jardine had made a quality product to begin with. I don't appreciate the idea of putting my child in a bed that could become dangerous to her. However, I think for us this worked out alright for the most part, despite the stress and frustration of the whole process. Good luck to the other parents out there dealing with this.

I contacted corp. BRU and was told that if ours is not on the list there will be no voucher. Keep in mind, they have taken them off their floors. This has left me with no confidence in Jardine or BRU. I e-mailed Corp Jardine. No response as of yet. If a Senator is trying to get all of these type of cribs banned, all the companys should voluntarily recall any drop sides. Whether they are on a recall list or not is not significant. There are a number of cribs, not neccesarily Jardine, causing significant injuries and or deaths. I e-mailed Fox news with all the info I gathered which is a very time consuming process. We can't wait for Congress to make these companies do the right thing!! We are buying a standard crib this week with no drop side rail. Class action suit sounds good to me. Consumer safety commision cannot force BRU and or Jardine to make good on drop sides not on the Federal recall list. These companies expect people to either give up or are too busy to take the time to do something about it. By making it so difficult for people to get vouchers or sending broken parts back is ridiculous!! The company that carries Jardine or any other product should call the vendor themselves not the consumer!!!!!!!! After reading all the comments, you may get a little help from consumer affairs. Its worth a shot. Don't know if Fox news will be of any help but is was worth trying. There is no prevention anymore. It takes injuries and or death before a product ends up on a recall list. Whats wrong with this picture. Taking a proactive approach by voluntarily recalling all drop side rails is the only safe way to go. Ah but this costs money. The crib industries attention won't be had until they are in the same situation that Toyota is currently in. And we all know how cost effective that was

I had to go out and spend money on a new crib-money I did not have, with the hollow promise that we would get a voucher from jardine. Our daughter actually broke one of the slats during the night, she could have been impaled on the slat with where it broke. The only reason I found out that her crib was now part of the recall was because I couldn't get ahold of anybody at jardine so I looked them up online and the recall is what came up. They are beyond rude, and very thoughtless about what they have put parents through. It was irresponsible and negligent on their part to not notify consumers directly about the recall-a reputable company would have done this. To knowingly put our childrens lives in danger is beyond unbelievable and deserves a class action lawsuit!! As I told the inconsiderate snot on the phone at jardine, they knowingly produced garbage and sold it to unknowing consumers as a quality product. She disagreed and said there is nothing wrong with what they produce. I said if you have had 3 massive recalls in a row, obviously you have a serious problem and shouldn't be in business. We buy these products assuming that our precious little ones will be safe. Jardine has no right being in business and if there is a class action lawsuit, I'd gladly jump on board. I'm stuck looking at that fricken crib for now till I hear back from the cpsc about the incident report-so I can't even take Jardine's required pieces off of it to get my voucher!! And as I pointed out to BRU, That supposed voucher, should it ever materialize doesn't even come close to covering the cost of a decent new crib with the rise in cost of everything known to mankind.

We also purchased matching pieces on which you made a profit and now cannot match a crib without adding over $100.00. We shopped at your store in Fort Myers, Punta Gorda, and Sarasota- when we told them we had a voucher we were virtually ignored in every store and in Sarasota we were told to drive on to Tampa. We were also told that there is a larger selection on-line but our voucher will not cover that it is for an in-store purchase only- I want to make an in-store purchase at another store where they are more accommodating. I also noticed that BRU is selling what appears to be the same crib still manufactured by Jardine but under the name Bergamo Americana Lifetime Convertible Crib. My voucher isn"t enough to buy this identical crib either. Not a happy BRU customer.

I wonder if an infant can break the slats, what damage could a toddler or older child do to the crib when it is being used as a bed headboard and footboard. Also the upper left hand drawer of the matching changing table has split recently, in addition to the strong fish odor it has had since we purchased it new at BRU in 5/2006. The furniture was unpacked and assembled in August 2206. My husband says, "we could have bought this crap at any cheap-ass furniture store." We paid higher-end prices to get higher-end quality. You're damn right there should be a class action suit and the rewards should come out of their corporate pockets and quarterly dividends, and not consumers who were suckered into this mess. Thier half-assed, cheap-assed imitation of an atonement just adds salt to the wound and extra money should be awarded just for that as well.

I think a class action suit is appropriate. We bought an entire set of Jardine furniture from Babies R Us, an the voucher amount is not nearly enough to cover a comperable replacement. It would cost me at least an extra $150 to get a suitable replacement, and I REFUSE to give them any more money.

Lisa- just wondering if you've posted similar comments on another site and if anyone has replied . We, too have had many issues with Jardine. It's crazy how they're handling this and it's pretty obvious that they just want us to go away. The threat of a class action suit might make them take notice and treat their customers a little better.
