Jeep Wrangler Fire Risk Investigated by NHTSA September 1, 2009 AboutLawsuits Add Your Comments U.S. transportation safety officials have begun an investigation into the possibility that Jeep Wranglers may burst into flames for seemingly no apparent reason. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began investigating 2007 and 2008 model Jeep Wranglers for fire risk on August 12, after receiving three reports of the transmission overheating, which in at least one case caused the vehicle to burst into flames. The preliminary NHTSA investigation report indicates that the fires may be the result of transmission overheating, which could lead to transmission fluid leaking out and contacting hot surfaces, potentially resulting in fire. One report indicated that the vehicle began to smoke when transmission fluid leaked onto the catalytic converter. The investigation comes at a time when Chrysler Group LLC, the new company that emerged from recent bankruptcy proceedings, just announced that it will accept potential liability for personal injury lawsuits involving defects with older Chrysler vehicles made before the bankruptcy. Jeep is a division of Chrysler. Chrysler confirmed that they are aware of some Jeep Wranglers fires in China, but indicates that no reports have been received within the United States. Company officials say they are cooperating with the NHTSA investigation. Ronald June 28, 2011 I purchased my jeep Rubicon two years ago it 7000 miles it had to be towed back to the dealer because the transmission stock into gear of having shot now for 6 times each time stating they fix the problem now the jeep is out of warranty 37,000 miles the transmission goes out completely I’ve made numerous calls to the Chrysler dealership with no help at all from them is now in the shop independently being fixed hopefully this shop tells me I need a complete clutch repair. $1500 shame on you Chrysler… Nick May 14, 2011 My 2006 Jeep wrangler burst into flames today while i was driving down the interstate. The fire much like mentioned in the report above started around the area of the gas tank. I was driving from my home in Hartsville S.C to Greenville S.C on the interstate for about an hour and a half when suddenly a plume of white smoke filled my rear view mirror. I got out and noticed the fire and its location and ran in fear that it might explode. The car proceded to burn to the ground engulfed in flames up to roughly 15ft high followed by a bang ( Im guessing that the the gas exploding). There was nothing left of that car but heap of chared sheet metal. jeffrey May 3, 2011 2008 wrangler bought new and to date impeccable service records. April 30,2011 i was stopped at a red light and the engine stalled, tried to start it back up when i noticed flames flaring up past my side window. jumped out , called 911 and watched it burn. it seems to have started under the seats on the outside then quickly spread to the engine compartment. fire dept. came within 10 mins and hosed it . while the jeep was being towed it went into flames again and caused slight damage to the tow truck and more to the jeep. seems that it’ll take a lawyer to sort this one out. insurance inspector said it will probably affect MY settlement Josh April 23, 2011 My house burned down in august 2010. There was an 2010 jeep wrangler Rubicon in the garage. The fire defiantly started in the garage. I was home at the time. I had to run for my life it was such a big fire. 15 mins before the fire i was outside at the pool. In the matter of mins the garage was up in flames. What could possibly make that big of a fire that fast? The car was investigated and the engineer said that the burnt patterns were inside out. Which means that the fire started in the car. I have not gotten the report yet, but it will very interesting. Michael April 18, 2011 Called the NHTSA and filed a complaint about my occurrence Friday night. Also called the dealer nearest me and they informed me they will not even touch my truck until Chrysler is contacted and an investigator has inspected my jeep. Now I am left with the option of driving my jeep which nearly caught fire Friday night and having the same thing happen again this time I am sure withuch more di’er consequences or rent until investigators have performed there duties. All this and I deploy in 2 days for the gulf. Just what I needed! Michael April 17, 2011 IF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED ANYTHING LIKE THIS WITH YOUR JEEP PLEASE GOOGLE THE NHTSA WEBSITE AND FILE A FORMAL COMPLAINT. Michael April 17, 2011 EVERYONE WHO HAS HAD THIS PLEASE CALL THE Michael April 17, 2011 I had a very close call last night 4/15/2010 on route 101 in CA while stuck in traffic. Smoke started pouring from behind the engine block near the transfer case on my 2008 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4WD manual transmission. Definitely smelled of burning transmission fluid. I immediately pulled off the hwy but left my hood down as to try to suffocate whatever was burning. Let my truck sit for over an hour then drove it 8 miles to a friends house. Managed to get home that night but my truck still reeks of smoke. Will be taking it to the dealer tomorrow and have informed him of the forum we have here and everyones post. This was the first time my jeep has been in the hills as I have driven it mostly in New Orleans where it there are none. I have 35000 miles but feel I may be in the same boat as all that have posted here already. I thanked God I didn’t catch fire as I was sure I was mere seconds from it going up in flames. I am in the military and leave Tuesday for a sixth month deployment overseas. I will not even have time to deal with this completely but I do believe with so many reporting problems just in this chat that there are probably ten times as many that have not seen this forum or have chosen not to post. PLEASE IF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED ANY OF THESE PROBLEMS OR YOUR JEEP HAS SUDDENLY BURST INTO FLAMES ADD TO THIS BOARD SO THAT WE CAN INFORM THE SAFETY COMMISION. Our’s did? Joyce January 20, 2011 Our Jeep Rubicon 2008 4dr also burst into flames and the entire front part of the vehicle is burnt our beyond recognition!! What can be the cause of this. It has ow been 6 months later and our insurance claim is still pending? How about yours? kurt January 15, 2011 Had a 2010 jeep sport, we went on a vacation and on our way back the jeep burst in flames while stopped at a red light. The night before I gassed up, woke up about 5 left at 530 drove 200 miles pulled off interstate to get something to eat and while at the light to turn smoke started to roll out the engine died no warnings. My wife was driving and my 2 year old sone was in the back seat she jumped out and got my son and ran to the median to call 911 while i took my jacket and tried to beat the fire out untill the fire truck came 3 minutes later and hosed it down. The jeep is totaled. Insurance payed what I owed plus some for my winch, lights and hitch, but man I miss my jeep it had 14k miles auto 4 door Matthew December 20, 2010 Purchased a brannd new 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited on Oct. 26, 2010. On December 10, 2010 it caught fire on my way home from work. Got out just in time. It is a total loss. Chrysler does not take responsibility. They say they found no manufacturing defect that caused the fire. The only thing they would tell me was the fire was caused from after market items. Any after market items were already on the vehicle when it was purchased. We did not have anything extra added. According to the dealership, these parts were Chrysler parts and would not have contributed to the fire. No one wants responsibility. I understand from other sources there was a recall on the transmission fluid overheating and causing problems. So we have a total loss brand new vehicle that we are still paying for, insurance will not cover total cost, down payment, deductible, items in vehicle at time of loss, or rental car out of pocket, as they should not have to. This was definitely a Chrysler problem. When is someone going to make them pay for their mistakes, after someone is dead? Penny December 11, 2010 Our 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara caught fire tonight and is a total loss. It was 6 months old and had 3200 miles on it. My husband was driving it home from work, smelled smoke, then saw flames and ran as it had a full tank of gas. The Wrangler is a total loss. We never would have bought one if we had known this was an issue. Jesse December 10, 2010 Are these mainly automatics? Just king of wonering if jeeps have a wet clutch in them or not? Jesse December 6, 2010 This sounds very interesting and something that should be take care of at the factory. I am just wondering if there are any fixes known to work to prevent this problem and how much it costs. I am thinking about buying one of these! Or maybe not! kathryn November 29, 2010 My 2008 jeep wrangler caught on fire wednesday nov. 24th 2010 and is a total loss.Flames shot up through the floor while I was driving. Wished I had known about the problems beforehand. My jeep had 40,000 miles on it. Don’t know what caused the fire yet. ROBERT November 15, 2010 I PURCHASED A 2010 SAHARA ON 08 NOVEMBER 2010. IT WAS BURNED TO THE GROUND ON 14 NOVEMBER 2010!! I don’t know what jeep has going on but it needs to be addressed. I bought my jeep for off roading and didn’t even get to do that once! The first day I had it it had to be taken back to the dealer because it was sputtering. They said it was just a sensor but I’ll be looking to get the service reciept to show what work was really done. this jeep had less than 400 miles and was less than a week owned. The jeep was a total loss; nothing left but the frame and some melted metal. If anyone is pursueing further action please let me know, I’m all in on this one. I had a trip planed for out of town planned for the next day with my family so that could have been a tragedy. Even though my insurance will more than likely pay for it I will never buy another jeep again. Tyler November 9, 2010 I HAD a 2007 jeep wrangler unlimited that intmittenly burst into flames as i was driving down the highway. By the time i got stopped the carpet already began to smolder. The jeep was a total loss even though this happened about two years ago there was no recall and now there is i was wondering what would be the besat way to approach chrysler to get my loss of money back in my pocket??? stephen October 14, 2010 they should have to replace the transmission to.it is not right to do people like that .we pay a lot for a jeep to not last no longer than 50000 miles.that is stealing in my book.should be against the law. David October 13, 2010 In May 10th 2009 I was burned while at work when my company vehicle jeep wrangler burst into flames and sent me to the hospital. The responding Deputy told me there had been a few instances like this. I know that the Jeep gave us a bunch of problems before I was sent to the hospital. Everything from jumping gears to stalling out. Some one once told me there was no cover on the exaust or catalytic converter which I though was very odd for a off road vehicle but I don’t know that for a fact. This is the first I have heard about any recalls. Sharron October 11, 2010 Our 2010 JK burst into flames today while trying to get out of some mud…not deep. My husband was burned on his face and arms. Will keep you posted once we contact Chrysler/Jeep. Jeff September 26, 2010 My 2008 jeep wrangler did the exact same thing on August 25th 2010. Its an outrage to spend so much on a seemingly nice vehicle, but have no support from chrysler whate so ever Francis September 19, 2010 This web site is a real eye popper. It has a lot of information and stories on how badly Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep is treating its customers. A number of their vehicles were not even involved in a wreck and managed to burst into flames and burn it’s occupants do death because they could not get out of them. There is a lot of footage of vehicles accross the product line burning. A police department purchased a fleet of Chrysler cars and could not put them into service because they kept catching on fire. They specified “persuit ready” on the purchase contract. Chrysler rep came out and saw this happen first hand and told them it was their fault because of the way they were driving them. Those cars never went into service. A lot of information here. http://www.dontbuydodgechryslervehicles.com/ O M September 19, 2010 Today, Saturday, September 18th, 2010, my 2dr Jeep Rubicon burst into flames whilst on a sand road, in Nevada, USA. Within 9 minutes it was burned to the ground – doors off, hood off, wheels melted. Rod September 11, 2010 We have a 2007 Wrangler 4 door – two weeks ago took it in for the 55000k service and they installed the hot oil warning light. Two days later, took it up a logging road (easy but gaining some elevation) and the light went on and incessant dinging. Turned around, went home, phoned dealer. Never heard of such a thing, they said. Called Chrysler Canada – they said take it to dealer. Took it to dealer – apparently the transmission fluid was burned black. They recommended flushing transmission and installing an external transmission cooler – – and quoted $700. Called Chrysler again and told them dealer’s recommendations. I said – should be covered under warranty. They offered to pay labour only – I would have to buy cooler and fluid. I said – this is a design flaw – you only installed the hot oil light a few days ago, so how was I to know the fluid was overheating? I said, I see on the internet that these things have been catching fire. They said they’d get back to me – but haven’t. Now I meet another guy in town here with a 2008 (only 6000 k on his) with exactly the same problem. We don’t do serious off roading – just old logging roads that can be steep. No grinding through mud or rock crawling. And the light comes on in two wheel drive and four wheel. I was on a mountain road the other day, stopped when the light came on, and a PT cruiser cruised past me! The trail rated badge seems to be lying. Chrysler promised to get back to me three weeks ago and failed to do so. Can we not shame them in the media? I’ve just been reading about the numerous cases of jk’s catching fire in China, with no apparent action from Chrysler. I am outraged!! SoK66 August 1, 2010 Chrysler is grossly negligent on this issue and is simply trying to stall for time, hoping enough of the affected vehicles will pass out of warranty that they can minimize cost exposure. The issue is overheated trans oil, not a deficient warning system, and Chrysler is doing nothing to fix the root defect, which is insufficient fluid capacity and cooling. The transmission oil cooler used on the JK is at the base of the A/C condenser, and is blocked by the bumper and body front crossmember. Aside from blocked airflow, it obviously has insufficient cooling capacity for the weight and intended use of these vehicles. Chrysler’s recall notice clearly states that the trans oil can overheat “in severe usage conditions such as trailer towing, snow plowing or extreme off-road driving”. That is, it can overheat in normal use of the vehicle! Envision this: a driver is towing a trailer within the capacity of the JK and ascending a long grade, like up to the Eisenhower Tunnel on I70. The “Hot Oil” warning goes off. Now what is the driver to do? Risk an accident to pull over and let it cool down, only to have it overheat again? The proper fix for this is for Chrysler to fit these vehicles with an adequate transmission fluid cooling system. I urge anyone experiencing this defect to 1) first have the recall completed to cover your liability, and 2) contact NHTSA and provide details of the fault. Tell them that Chrysler’s recall does not fix the root cause of the problem and that your safety risk is not corrected by their recall. This whole issue and Chrysler’s response is frankly an outrage. Jill July 18, 2010 Sure wish I had known about this sooner. I bought a 2007 4D jeep wrangler in March and before I could even get the oil changed (had it less than 3 months) it burst into flames on 6/29. I recieved a letter from Chrysler last week in which they promise to get back to me in 12 days. I sure hope they are willing to step up to the plate and do the right thing! Francis May 24, 2010 When the new 4 DR JK came out in ’07, I thought I just had to have one. I have owned several Jeeps over the years. I followed several boards on them and could not get past the very poor customer support from Chrysler. It was mentioned several times Chrysler had a group of reps. that it seems there sole purpose was to deny warranty claims. Then the fire issue that as far as I can see still has not been resolved. The JK was my first choice of vehicles, the FJ Cruiser was second and the Xterra was the third. In ’08, I bought a new Xterra with the off road package. It takes me anywhere I want to go, now has 20k miles on it and not one visit to the dealer for any porblems. I don’t have to worry about this vehicle bursting into flames. It is a sad and pathatic game Chrysler/Jeep is playing with peoples lives letting this problem go uncorrected for so long. Unfortunely, it is going to take a fatility (s) to get any real action on this. Jon May 13, 2010 My 2008 Jeep Rubicon caught fire while driving on interstate on April 30, 2010. It burned up & Jeep just notified me that they are denying claim after their investigation. Angela April 12, 2010 My 2009 JK 2Dr, went up in flames on the 8th this month. I was driving down the highway, came off the ramp and right after the turn onto the street the car died. I got out looked underneath and saw flames. Maybe 5 minutes later the entire engine area was engulfed in flames. I dont know what happened, but I am sure that it has to do with what happened to your JK’s. I havent contact Jeep yet. steve February 8, 2010 my 2007 jeep wrangler with an automatic transmission burst into flames causing the complete destruction of the vehicle it started underneath the vehicle i tried to extinguish it by throwing snow at the fire with no success , called the fire department, by the time they arrived it was a big firey ball . i was told by chrysler my vin number didnt appear to be under recall but i am absolutely sure the problem is with the transmission fluid venting out and igniting Andrew January 30, 2010 The same thing has just happened to my 2007 JK Wrangler in Australia. My father was reversing the JK in his driveway when he heard three loud popping sounds. Next thing there is fire coming out of the radio and under his feet. he jumped out but the car is a write off. Really upset and pissed off and no reponse from Jeep Australia Collin January 2, 2010 My jeep just burned out earlier today. It was a 2008 4-door Sahara. We had been doing some off-roading and then all of the sudden it was on fire. It was a total loss, but we did salvage one of the aluminum wheels, which had melted into a molten puddle and then re-hardened. Becky December 10, 2009 I had the same thing happen to my 2009 4 door Jeep Rubicon. It had 8000 when it burst into flames. Chrysler is denying any responsibility and is refusing to pay. It took two weeks to get anything substantial out of them. At first they act like they care, then they put you off. You would think that the fact that there were 3 children in the car and 2 adults would have made them move quicker. My guess is they are going to let someone die before they do something. Lynnie November 6, 2009 John – the same thing happened to my 2008 4 door the day following yours (Nov 4). I contacted Chrysler, they told me the special investigating unit would contact me within 48 hours. I got a call from a man named Jay. He is going to have someone look at my vehicle and get back to me. Have you spoken with someone at Chrysler yet? And what has been determined in your case? John November 4, 2009 My 2009 4 door jeep Wrangler burst into flames yesterday morning after my wife had just dropped our 2 children to school. Contacted the company yesterday morning at 10 am and again this afternoon at 4 pm . They have forwarded it to their special investigating unit. This dept has no direct phone number . I was told it was a priority for the company, but still haven’t got a call. Does anyone have advice on the best way to proceed Benjamin September 16, 2009 I just bought a 2006 Jeep Wrangler with only 4400 miles on it, mint condition from my friend and neighbor. I drove it on three short trips totalling 40 miles. 2miles from the house on a two track road trying not to get it muddy, I did high end it in the center and was stuck. When I got out to observe the situation in the dark, I noticed flames up near the engine near through the driver side wheel well. The fire propogated and the Jeep is a total loss. Cannot imagine what caused the fire, makes no sense.
