Lawsuit Alleges Johnson & Johnson OGX Shampoo Products Cause Hair Loss July 14, 2021 Russell Maas Add Your Comments A class action lawsuit filed over Johnson & Johnson OGX shampoos and conditioners, alleges the manufacturer falsely advertised the hair products as safe, while concealing information consumers may be exposed to formaldehyde and other ingredients which could cause hair loss and other injuries. The complaintย was filed by Larissa Whipple in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois on June 7, seeking class action status to pursue damages on behalf of all consumers nationwide who purchased variations of OGX shampoos and conditioners, indicating Johnson & Johnson made misleading and false statements about the benefits purportedly offered by the products, while failing to warn consumers they may be exposed to cancer-causing ingredients. The lawsuit involves Johnson & Johnson OGX Shampoo and/or Conditioner products, which contain DMDM hydantoin as an ingredient. DMDM hydantoin is an antimicrobial formaldehyde known to cause reactions including itchiness, red rashes on the skin brittle hair, loss of hair and even dermatitis. Learn More SEE IF YOU QUALIFY FOR COMPENSATION Do You Know Aboutโฆ Spinal Cord Stimulator lawsuits Spinal cord stimulator lawsuits are being investigated for individuals who suffered unnecessary shocks, burns or other problems, often resulting in the need for additional surgery to remove the SCS. Learn More SEE IF YOU QUALIFY FOR COMPENSATION Whipple claims Johnson & Johnson OGX shampoo products are marketed nationwide with false and misleading marketing and labeling claims, specifically touting on the product labeling that the OGX line of shampoos and conditioners nourish, revive, enhance and repair damaged hair, making it healthier and thicker. However, the lawsuit claims customers are being exposed to DMDM hydantoin ingredients, which may cause consumers to suffer hair loss, allergic reactions, or skin and scalp irritation. While formaldehyde-releasers are common in shampoo and conditioner, to prevent microbes from growing in water-based products, the lawsuit claims there are safer alternatives than DMDM hydantoin. The lawsuit specifically points out that since 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified formaldehyde as a human carcinogen, and the National Toxicology Program of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) named formaldehyde as a known and definite carcinogen to humans. Whipple claims Johnson & Johnson was or should have been fully aware of DMDM hydantoin risks to consumers, stating the manufacturer announced plans to remove DMDM hydantoin from all products by 2015. However, when Johnson & Johnson acquired Vogue International, including their line of OGX products, Johnson & Johnson failed to change the ingredient profile and continued to sell OGX shampoos and conditioners containing DMDM hydantoin. The Johnson & Johnson OGX shampoo lawsuit alleges the company falsely advertised benefits of using the line of products, as part of an effort to increase profits by maintaining a false superiority over alternative shampoos, while concealing DMDM hydantoin risks. The complaint seeks to represent a nationwide class of individuals who purchased one of the OGX products and has either suffered, or will suffer economic losses in repairing and restoring damage caused by the products. Claims of fraud and unjust enrichment are presented in the case, which also seeks punitive damages against Johnson & Johnson for its alleged malice, motive and reckless disregard for consumer safety. The case is one of several shampoo lawsuits filed in recent years over products containing formaldehyde, with one of the most recent filed in an Illinois Court against Suave, raising similar allegations the manufacturer used false and misleading marketing and labeling claims to promote their Unilever Professional line of shampoos and conditioners that contain DMDM hydantoin. In 2014, Unilever agreed to pay $10.2 million to settle a Suave class action lawsuit filed by consumers over hair loss from its formaldehyde-containing Suave Keratin Infusion treatments. The lawsuit claimed the manufacturer engaged in deceptive advertising by claiming Keratin Infusion hair products were formaldehyde free, even though they contained a chemical which released formaldehyde when used. The byline on the label under the name says, “Looking for the Fountain of Youth? Inspired by an ancient Asian secret, this blend with sake, ginseng and protein helps renew strands while helping keep hair looking young, soft and healthy.” I was totally sold on that utter shite. A LOT OF MY HAIR HAS FALLEN OUT AND NOT GROWN BACK AND I HAVE VERY NOTICEABLE BALDNESS ALL OVER MY SCALP. I AM BLAZING MAD, I HAD GORGEOUS, HEALTHY, LONG, THICK, CURLY MASSES OF HAIR, AND I HAVE BEEN TOTALLY DEVASTATED BY THE PERMANENT LOSS OF IT, ARGUABLY OVERNIGHT, STARTING ON THE FIRST NIGHT i USED IT!! AND YOU ARE DAMNED WELL GOING TO COMPENSATE ME FOR MAKING ME SUFFER NEEDLESSLY LIKE THAT, JOHNSON AND JOHNSON!!!. YOU HAVE SO SERIOUSLY VIOLATED MY TRUST IN YOUR PRODUCTS. I HAD A MORE THAN REASONABLE EXPECTATION THAT THIS AND TWO OTHER PRODUCTS IN THE OGX LINE, THE BIOTIN AND COLLAGEN SHAMPOO/CONDITIONER AND THE NIACIN & CAFFEINE SHAMPOO/CONDITIONER…WHICH HAS THE PHRASE “FIGHT HAIR LOSS!” RIGHT ABOVE THE NAME…WERE HIGH QUALITY PRODUCTS THAT WOULD AUGMENT MY HAIR’S VITALITY, NOT CAUSE THE EXACT OPPOSITE!! AND I PAID DOUBLE THE MONEY I USUALLY SPEND ON HAIR CARE PRODUCTS IN THE BELIEF THAT I WOULD BE TAKING BETTER CARE OF MY HAIR IF I DID SO!!! I CAN’T BELIEVE THAT YOU PUT OUT A PRODUCT THAT CAUSED MY PREVIOUSLY INEXPLICABLE HAIR LOSS!! I MEAN, I DEVELOPED SERIOUS, NOTICEABLE AND PROGRESSIVE HAIR LOSS PRACTICALLY OVERNIGHT WHILE USING THESE PRODUCTS AND I DIDN’T LINK IT TO USE OF YOUR PRODUCTS BECAUSE I SO TRUSTED YOUR BRAND!!!!!!!! BUT THE FACT IS, HAIR LOSS IN WOMEN IS GENETIC, AND I HAD ONLY ONE RELATIVE WHO EXPERIENCED FEMALE HAIR LOSS, BUT ONLY BECAUSE SHE HAD HER HAIR TREATED WITH HARSH CHEMICALS INTO HER 80’S, TO GIVE IT THAT “OLD LADY BLUE HAIR” COLOR! YOU BETTER BELIEVE THAT I WANT IN ON THIS LAWSUIT, YESTERDAY!!! AND IF MY HAIR DOES NOT REGENERATE TO ITS FORMER GLORY NOW THAT I WILL NEVER, EVER USE YOUR CRAPASS PRODUCTS EVER AGAIN AND WILL SEEK OUT WELL-RESEARCHED AND PROVEN NATURAL HAIR REGROWTH PRODUCTS TO BRING IT BACK AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE…IF THOSE PRODUCTS FAIL TO RESTORE MY HAIR, YOU ARE GOING TO PAY FOR THAT!!! YOU SATANIC BASTARDS!!!! Lisa July 19, 2021 I have used it and my hair has came out and dry scalp. I never thought nothing of it. I didnโt completely finish the bottle because my hair fell out.I was so upset and disappointed. Itโs growing back it I went through severe depression and anxiety over this. I have pictures to prove it with date and fine stamps. Lynn July 18, 2021 Used this shampoo and conditioner together until I finished the bottles. I had, and still do have, problems with itching on my scalp. I actually ended up in the ER one Sunday because of it, as it was that severe. The itching still flares up even though I have not been using the products for a brief while. The hair thinning I just put to the fact that I was growing older. I just don’t know. Linda July 18, 2021 I have always had excessive heavy hair which is much thinner now but I just contributed it to aging. My husband and I have been using this product for 2+ years. My husband is more my concern. He has been treated for 3 years now with PRP injections taking his hair, skin and nails supplements, rogain and had phenomenal results his first year. These past 2 years of treatments, not so great and not understanding why. I suppose here is the problem. Ghada July 17, 2021 I canโt belive my hair stopped growing and falling in huge clumps in the shower and me thinking that itโs normal Tiffany July 17, 2021 I’ve used some of the shampoos and conditioners and experienced hair loss. I thought it was due to stress but it makes sense now because the amount of hair I would lose increased when I started using them. Gabe July 17, 2021 Iโve been using OGX shampoo / conditioner for the past 4 months under the impression it was good for my hair, my hair has thinned and fallen out much faster than it otherwise had in the past. (I assumed it was due to the length of my hair) In addition to that iโm growing my hair out for charity to donate it. I donโt feel right donating my hair if it has been severely damaged. James July 17, 2021 I am interested in joining both the national class and the Illinois sub-class. In 2016, while living in Illinois, I won a silent auction for a basket of personal care products that included some boutique salon hair care products with Argon Oil. I liked the shine they imparted to my hair, so when they ran out I looked for something less expensive to replace them. I saw the OGX-branded Moroccan Argon Oil shampoo and conditioner in a local pharmacy and decided to try that. At first I was satisfied that these products gave my hair shine and manageability similar to the salon products Iโd been using. But in late 2017 or early 2018, I developed a red patch the size of a nickel on my scalp. At first it was just one but over time, I developed a second one. They oozed a clear liquid that would dry into crusty patches between shampoos. In hindsight, I realize that that also is when I started experiencing significant hair loss, although at the time I didnโt connect the two. Seeking to quell the scalp irritation, I (unwisely as it turns out) switched from the OGX Moroccan Argon Oil shampoo and conditioner to the OGX Tee Tree Oil Shampoo and Conditioner. They felt soothing while I used them in the shower, but, I realize in hindsight, that rather than improving my scalp condition they continued to make it worse. I moved to Maryland in the fall of 2018 and continued to use the OGX Tee Tree Oil products while I continued to experience scalp irritation and hair loss. I attributed the hair loss to the aging process but began to worry about the red patches, fearing skin cancer. My wife, a nurse practitioner, thought they most likely were Actinic Keratosis and urged me to go see a dermatologist. In early 2020 I saw a physician assistant in a local dermatology practice who biopsied the two red patches and called me to say they were not cancerous, but offered no other advice. During the COVID 19 pandemic the condition of my scalp deteriorated quickly and the hair loss grew more pronounced. I thought maybe it was a response to the Pandemic stress many of us felt. By late 2020 I was very nearly bald and very depressed and embarrassed by the condition of my scalp, the top of which was now completely bright red. In early 2021, when our local dermatology practice had resumed seeing patients, I made an appointment with one of their physicians. He took one look at my scalp and said I had contact dermatitis. He put me on Prednisone and told me to discontinue using any cosmetic products NOT made by Clear and Free. In a matter of weeks the scalp redness and oozing resolved. He and my primary care physician then put me on Finasteride and Rogaine. My hair loss has now returned to its baseline level, and I am very slowly starting to regrow some of the hair I lost. However, most of the new hair coming in is white. This is something I experienced also when in my 40s I had several bouts of Alopecia Areata. Then, I would lose a quarter-size patch of hair and when it grew back in it came in white. So the upshot is that due to the OGX family of products and the negligence of Johnson and Johnson, I have gone, in the space of a few years, from being a youthful-appearing 63 year old to and elderly looking 66 year old โ and I want to see them help accountable. LaVonda July 17, 2021 Well, that’s it for me not using it anymore, guess I won’t be washing my hair this morning. Merelyn July 17, 2021 Iโve used ogx products for years on and off but only started using it again recently. I began to notice hair almost the size of a fist would be coming out every time I would wash my hair. Now I have two big bald spots on both side of my head which I now have to hide. I didnโt think I would be having this issue so badly before I was even 30 itโs really starting to affect me my hair is very important to me so imagine how I feel. Clint July 17, 2021 My crown hair fell out along with a change of texture was after using their biotin conditioner and shampoo. How can I join this lawsuit? Susan July 17, 2021 I have used these products off and on for years. I have hair that comes out daily that I feel is coming out to an expensive point. Itโs like handfuls when I wash and full hair balls when I brush. Rena July 16, 2021 I have been using this brand over 3 years and my hair had got so thin plus I have been dealing with itching and rashes or dermatitis too on my head and even skin rashes . I am very concerned now! Theresa July 16, 2021 This is crazy I have been using their shampoo and conditioner. Also the sunscreen I have four bottles of it and they tell you just disregard it I should be reimbursed. This is crazy that they keep getting away with doing this kind of stuff Melissa July 16, 2021 have been using Argan oil of Morocco shampoo and conditioner for over a year I didnโt notice at first my hair falling out but over time I noticed more and more hands full of hair falling out.
