KitchenAid Electric Kettle Recall Issued Due to Risk Handle May Break, Creating Burn Hazard

Roughly 100,000 KitchenAid electric kettles have been recalled, following reports of problems where the handles loosened or separated from the kettle, resulting in several burn injuries when the hot contents spilled. 

The Whirlpool KitchenAid electrical kettle recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on February 20, after at least 98 consumer complaints were received involving issues with the handles loosening or separating from the kettle.

The recall includes KitchenAid 1.7 Liter electric kettles that were sold in stainless steel, red, black, white, liquid graphite and cocoa silver colors and have the model and serial numbers printed on the bottle of the kettle. The recalled units have the brand name “KitchenAid” printed on the front of the kettles.

The recalled kettles were manufactured in China by Co-Win Global Ltd, of Hong Kong where they were imported by Whirlpool Corp., of Benton Harbor, Michigan. The kettles were sold at Beth Bath & Beyond, Dillard’s, Fry’s Electronics, Kitchen Kaboodle, Kohl’s, Navy Exchange, Target, Williams Sonoma, and other home improvements stores nationwide as well as online at Amazon.com  from September 2013 through February 2018 for between $100 to $120.

According to the CPSC, 79 reports of the handles loosening or detaching have been reported in the United States, and another 19 were reported from Canadian consumers. An estimated 40,200 recalled kettles were distributed throughout the United States and an additional 47,300 were sold in Canada, as well as another 1,600 distributed for sale in Mexico.

Customers are being asked to stop using the recalled kettles immediately to prevent further burn injuries and to contact Whirlpool Corporation at 800-874-0608 or visit them online at http://repair.whirlpool.com and reference the recall number 18-103 for information on how to receive a free replacement.
