Mazda Class Action Lawsuit Filed Over Engine Defect

Mazda faces a class action lawsuit brought on behalf of vehicle owners, alleging that the automaker intentionally concealed information about an engine valve defect and has refused to repair the problem.

The complaint (PDF) was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey on August 21, seeking class action status to represent all owners of Mazda vehicles that used engines equipped with a variable valve timing (VVT) assembly.

According to allegations raised in the Mazda class action lawsuit, the variable valve timing assembly has a “propensity to fail prematurely,” which may cause the engine’s timing chain to loosen or detach, leading to partial or total engine failure.

“Although this defect is covered under Mazda’s powertrain warranty, Mazda fails to repair the defect under warranty,” the complaint indicates. “Mazda has had actual knowledge about the VVT assembly defect since at least 2007. Unfortunately, as part of the purchase process, Mazda has concealed material facts regarding the defect from purchasers and lessors of vehicles equipped with a defective VVT assembly.”

The lawsuit claims that Mazda’s standard response to complaints about the VVT defect is to maintain that the vehicle owners failed to provide sufficient proof of engine oil changes. The automaker’s standards are subjective and designed to make sure it does not have to acknowledge or repair the defect under warranty, according to allegations raised in the class action.

Vehicles that allegedly have the defective variable valve timing (VVT) assembly include the Maza CX-7, Mazdaspeed 3, Mazda 6 (2.3L) Mazda3, Mazda5 and MX-5. None of the defective engines have been in production since 2010, according to the complaint.

Mazda allegedly attempted to cover up the engine defects to uphold its claim that its vehicles will be “free from defects,” a statement made in its warranties, the lawsuit maintains. However, class action indicates that the company has known about the problem since November 2007, when it issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) to dealers stating:

When the engine is started, some vehicles may exhibit a loud ticking noise from the variable valve timing actuator at first start for a couple of seconds. This is caused by the lock pin of the variable valve timing
actuator not fully engaging. Heat treatment has now been added around the hole of the variable valve timing rotor lock pin to prevent this from happening.

The lawsuit says that the company determined that the variable valve timing assembly problems were caused by inadequate or improper hardening of the components when they were first manufactured and attempted several times to fix the problem.

The company has also received a number of consumer complaints about variable valve timing assembly failure leading to catastrophic engine failures, according to the complaint.

In January 2012, the company launched a “Special Services Program” for owners of vehicles affected by the problem, saying it would extend the warranty coverage specifically to repair the VVT on vehicles equipped with its L3T engine. it extended the warranty one year or 10,000 miles. However, the lawsuit claims that Mazda referred to the problem as a noise concern and did not advise consumers that it could lead to catastrophic engine failure, and excluded a number of vehicles with the defective VVT from the program.

The class action lawsuit for Mazda vehicle owners indicates presents claims for fraudulent concealment, breach of warranty, and violating consumer protection laws.

Due to other recall issues and where I live... rural Missouri...I had a difficult time getting in anywhere for the repairs needed and due to them not returning phone calls and emails regarding he issues(after they seemed to incessantly send me letters stating how important it was to get my car in to get the things fixed ASAP) we were not contacted. I was driving in the evening to get my son from the sitter after work and the first major issue occured and thank God it happened on gravel and not on the winding roads if literally just been driving down, my axle snapped in two. They eventually did the repairs for free and towed it to st Louis which is 100 miles away as well, but the mechanic at that Mazda dealership was rude and eventually straight up said that the CX-7 is the worst Mazda model csf they have ever made and that I needed to get a new car anyway. Many, many times he made sure to say this to me. That's fine and dandy for him to say and all but I have no money not the credit on top of that to get another vehicle. This is my sole vehicle and I rely on it heavily so last week when out of nowhere the serpentine belt broke and I just got it back this evening only to find it is smoking even worse than ever but is also smoking out the front....something it never did before the sudden snap and the smell of burning rubber is bad and also the computer system in it doesn't sound right nor have I heard the fan kick on to cool down the engine at all. I don't know if the guy at a local shop didn't put the belt on right or if it is a loose sensor and hopefully not worse...or what...but my car is so unreliable and it is something so frustrating always. Oh, and the locks suddenly stopped working properly right before the belt issues. Oh, to cap off my st Louis dealership debacle...which I am thankful they did the fix for free...I turned on my headlights to check them before driving the hundred miles home in the dark, and in repairs they worked on they dislodged completely my driver's side head light I had just put in myself and not only left it just laying inside there but also at some point the bracket arm completely that keeps the lights in place and said nothing to me about it. I am constantly adjusting my head lights by hand trying to make sure Im able to see the road instead of a shadow reminiscent of the batman logo. To sum it up...don't but the Mazda CX-7. The serpentine belt has made way for a headache now I just wish I could not be forced to deal with. I wish I'd read up before purchasing this and now my lesson has been learned for the future.

Mazda engines have a problem if they are turbocharged the seals fail and it will suck all the oil out and burn it in the exhaust and you will either spin a bearing or bend a rod either way the engine is toast. I should know just happened November 1 to me on my 2008 cx7 with 71,000 miles.

I had a 2006 Speed6GT w/ 53,000 miles and threw a rod through the side of the block. Mazda said it would be $2,800 to $3,200 to change the motor for only it to potentially happen again! This is BS and Mazda needs to step up and honor this poorly designed engine. How many people need to experience the same exact issue for them to accept a class action suit?

So, in addition to the purchase price (which was fair) I've already spent $950 getting it painted, $700 on tires, $200 on brakes, $100 on new visors (why aren't visors made to last?), $50 on windshield wiper blades, $125 for topping off freon & the oil change because the cap had been stripped and needed a new one, and $20 on a new antenna! Oh, and it needs the ball joints replaced which are covered under a recall!! Then yesterday, As I was driving on I-95 (the highway) going about 45-50 mph all packed up, intending to evacuate for hurricane Irma (I live in south Florida) when it started to pour down rain, and all of a sudden my A/C stops working, and the engine feels sluggish. Then within 3 minutes the check engine light starts flashing and I LOSE ALL ENGINE POWER AND TRACTION CONTROL AND BRAKES!!! A TOTAL Catastrophic failure on I-95 IN A DOWNPOUR THE DAY BEFORE HURRICANE IRMA!! I was packed up & heading out of town with my new tires, brakes, oil change, wiper blades, etc.!!! I was driving in the middle lane and had to get to a shoulder fast to avoid an accident, but had no power!! The car started smoking from the tailpipe and under the hood! I put on my hazards and tried to coast to a stop & finally had to use my emergency brake!! BLACK Oil was poring out of the bottom...MIND You Just 2 weeks after a synthetic oil change! I had to wait on the side of I-95 for 4 hours (because of the storm) to get towed to the mechanic who did the oil change! Needless to say, I was unable to get a rental car yesterday as they were all closed by the time I got finished at the mechanic!!! So now I'm stuck in FL in a HURRICANE because of this issue!!! A happy camper I am not!! All I can say is thank God for Uber! I'm just praying now that this engine failure doesn't cause me bodily harm for not being ABLE to evacuate!! So much for reliable transportation!! I've never felt so helpless in my life!! I NEED TO JOIN THIS CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT!! This is insane!! And there's no way I would replace that engine with another Mazda engine! IF I REPLACE IT!

Purchased a 2007 Mazda CX-7 2 years ago, was told that the timing may need to be changed but wasn't quoted a price. A day later, the car completely shuts off, had it towed to dealership where they are now telling me it will cost $8k to replace because now its needs a new motor.

My Mazda CX7 was taken to garage for oil leak and low oil. Replaced valve cover gasket and car started making noise " Mechanic took it to Mazda and they said "this happens with these cars..." Past warranty - 173k - and no redress from anyone. Mazda tech found it to have "VVT actuator noise, zero oil pressure, and turbo leaking, worn and failing internally...needs new engine."

How do I get my mother's Mazda added to this class action? She has a 2008 Mazda CX-7 and the engine is dead. They told her the exact excuse of not providing ample proof of oil changes. How should we go about getting them to replace the engine, or compensate her for this scam?

I purchased a 2008 Mazda3 used in the fall of 2015. When I purchased it, it had around 60,000 miles on it. I don't drive a great deal, so it now only has 85,000 on it 2.5 years later. My oil changes are done regularly and I pay attention to any lights and sensors that seem off. I had driven my car earlier in the day, no lights, no sounds, no indication that anything was wrong at all. I got back in a few hours later and was doing some highway driving. The check engine light went on as I got onto the highway. Not even 15 minutes later, as I started to climb a hill I noticed it was losing power and began pulling over. Between the time that I noticed I was losing power and the time I fully stopped and the car died could not have been more than 3 minutes. When the car died it began billowing smoke out the exhaust pipe and out from under the hood. The oil was checked and was at a normal level though the dipstick itself was almost too hot to touch. I didn't attempt to restart the car at any point but had myself pushed to a safe location. Had it towed to my shop and they said that oil levels looked normal, that there was coolant in the system. They said they can't even figure out exactly what was wrong or what had happened but that the engine was completely shot. I now have the option of purchasing a used engine with about the same number of miles my car had it when I purchased it (so 2.5 years of light driving) for $4100 installed or a new one from Mazda and only a single year warranty at the cost of $5000 installed, nearly the entire KBB value of the car. I am disgusted that there have been so many people before me with this issue, no warning signs, nothing, who have taken it to Mazda, and who have gotten absolutely no response. I really can't fathom how this isn't ever been recalled as it is abundantly clear that there is a significant defect that is affecting all of your cars with this engine. Disgraceful.

Have a 2007 Mazda 6 which we bought from the dealer in '09 with about 13,000 miles on it. Have always maintained it well. It now has about 90,000 miles and started making the ticking sound when cranking. Have been told its related to the timing components. Parts must be purchased individually since I can't find a kit. Parts and labor will probably run about $1500, probably more.

To add insult to injury, I was asked to approach Mazda corporate myself, and when the representative dealt me the news that Mazda was not going to do anything, she ended the call by saying, "Have a nice day." Un believable.

I still owe 8k on the car so this problem is one that's left me not knowing what to do. I've talked to a couple of techs and they are scared to mess with it and have recommended I take it to a Mazda dealership. I called the dealership and their tech said basically the same thing they were saying about the vvt issues in earlier models. They said it's likely a problem relayed to poor oil changes. My husband is a mechanic and has done the oil changes regularly in his garage except for the few times I took it to the dealership where I bought because I had a free or discounted oil change. The oil is always kept clean. I've yet to have it towed to the dealership because I'm still trying to figure out what to do about it. I'm having a hard time dedicating to almost 2k in repairs when I'm already at least 2-3k upside down on the car. My frustration is through the roof. This car should have lasted many more years before having a problem of this magnitude. The class action lawsuit should included the 2011 M3 i sport. The problem and their excuse for it are exactly the same as it was in previous years.

Over the course of the next 2 years I brought it into the Mazda dealership 5 times (the 1st time a female employee tells me over the phone if they can't fix my car the dealership will have to replace it free of charge then she paused was quiet rols me to hold on a few minutes whispered to someone else got back on the phone with me and told me there was nothing wrong with my car), a different Mazda dealership in Oregon twice, Ron's Automotive twice, America's Tire Co three times, a dealership in North Dakota, a dealership in Montana, small spots like costless, autozone, walmart automotive, shine in no time and The Tire Place several times over a year and a half. Almost every single place would look at me tell me they'll be right back to talk to someone else then come tell me there is absolutely nothing wrong with my car that it was running better than when I bought it. A few of the smaller places would tell me they hear something off but can't figure out what it would be. After years of this nonsense I had went to go to The Tire Place to put new tires on my car the owner was like holy Shit your car sounds horrible can I take a look? And sure enough in less than 10 minutes he had named off several things I had been telling Mazda dealership were wrong with my car for years. I had that car for almost 8 years the majority of the years it ran like shit, Mazda new but did nothing to fix it and engine failure finally put my poor baby to sleep with less than 86,000 miles on it. Waste of my money on bullshit the dealership could have fixed from the beginning. Now I've been without a car for almost 9 months I can't finance another vehicle since my son had cancer in the meantime ruining my credit, I'm no longer with my ex husband to help me out and my job is unaccounted as unverifiable income all because the Mazda dealership couldn't do the right thing and fix a vehicle the manufacturer already knew had a problem. To top off the cherry on the pie when my vehicle was stolen after all this chaos and I went in or that special program they tried telling me they had no idea what I was talking about they never heard such a thing so I pulled out my papers and they straightened up looked at me got an attitude and said I know what that is and your not eligible or signed up for it u don't have cash your credit sucks there's nothing we can do for you so goodbye. I was furious beyond belief I still freakin am.

We do drive it every now and again but only short distances and with our fingers crossed. I would love to sale it but I'm not the type of person to try and scam someone. The dealerstand know about the common problem and they are only willing to offer me $1500 for the Mazda as a trade in. I use to trust Mazda and spoke highly of them, this car as changed all of that and I make it clear to everyone I know.

To cut to the chase 6 months into ownership I went to accelerate onto a freeway on ramp and it just sputtered and the CE light came on. Took it to the dealer and turns out it broke an exhaust valve. Almost $2K into repairs and more things went wrong afterwards, including the transmission failing. I called Mazda directly and explained the situation to them - they basically told me tough shit. The dealership pretty much refused to help instead offering me $1000 as a "good will" trade in towards another one of their vehicles, to which I told them I should drive this piece of shit right through their fucking showroom. I was forced to give it up for voluntary repo because I had lost my job (no way to get to work without a vehicle) and Chase bank was pretty much unforgiving and refused to help at all, even after showing them receipts for all the work performed. Fuck Mazda, fuck Ford for supplying substandard parts and fuck Chase bank, too. They can all suck it and if there is indeed a class action suit brought I'm in.

When I first called Mazda USA they tried to give me the X Plan and buy a new car from them. My wife and I went round and round since this was very expensive even with the discount. I took the car to the shop under the assumption I was going to have to pay 1300.00 to fix with parts and labor. I made one last effort to call Mazda USA about this. Again they told me that I was out of the warranty period and then I explained that I am not requesting for them to cover 100% of the cost I just want them to do the right thing and stand behind there product. I also have replaced an oil cooler that was a poor design on this car that I explained. I told them I was not going to pursue legal action and I just wanted help. they asked me if the car was in the shop and I said yes. Then they gave me an ref number and then went to work on my behalf with the dealership. About 2 hours want by and then Mazda USA called me back. They told me Mr. Tulsa .. you are a valued Mazda customer and we want to help you. We will only have you pay for parts and we will cover the labor and the price will be $481.60 for the parts. I was honestly emotional they would do anything on my car since was over 50K outside the warranty period. When I returned to the dealership they told me my car was ready and that Mazda took care of the Labor and all I had to pay for was parts. I guess they didn't realize Mazda USA gave me the price because they tried to charge me 900.00 . I gave them the price that Mazda USA told me and they adjusted my bill. I was very happy and the car runs great!!!!!!!!!!

After the engine was warmed up from driving and you pulled to a stop at a red light, the engine is very loud now. The dealership said we need to replace the VVT, oil cooler and turbo. $5,500. He said they had all been under a recall that expired after 7 years or 70,000 miles. How does a recall expire? I've never heard that before. I don't want to throw good money after bad. We still owe on it. The dealership said that they would give us $1,000 for trade in value and that even if we spent the $5,500 to fix everything, they wouldn't give us a penny more. That tells me they don't even believe in their own brand. We're stuck waiting for it to quit but we don't trust it to get out of town. Where can we sign up for a lawsuit, assuming it's going to be a Class Action lawsuit?

So the problem in my opinion is timing chain lack of lubrication at start up. it needs a bath of oil before the start up crank. I was thinking on purchasing a 12 volt oil pump,do all the piping and install a switch next to steering wheel to momentarily send oil to timing chain before the start up.

As a result of the looseness a rattle may occur at the lower control arm ball joint. After extended operation in this condition, in the worse case the ball joint and lower control arm may separate." Safety Risk: "The vehicle may experience significant loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash". Remedy: "Dealers will replace the lower control arms". Recall Status: "Recall INCOMPLETE. Remedy not yet available". My Mazda CX7 grand touring was purchased new 8/23/11. It is 23,000 miles on it and is well maintained. The circumstances of this recall to not allow me to sell or trade in this vehicle until the recall has been completed. Upon contacting Mazda I was advised that they are working on this and I should be contacted in mid September. To say my customer experience was less than terrific is an understatement. I just have to sit and look at my CX7, cannot sell it or trade it in. Disgusted with Mazda.

The BS story they came up with was the car set to long. We drove it everyday to work. About 3 months ago my wife was going to work and the car started missing very bad. Took to dealer and the list of things that needed repaired was unreal. Every gasket was leaking and I mean every gasket. Oil,transmission, radiator Valve cover gasket. Also had to have plugs and wires replaced. Just to mention a few. I'm 65 years old and I have owned a lot of cars in my life but this CX7 takes the cake. When I was in the shop the call me and say they have great news for me. There is a recall on the timing belt. Now would you not think I would have received a recall notice. Now after have the plugs and wires replaced I have a valve ( number 3) that is misfiring. It looks to me has Mazda is building their cars with subpar parts. And from I'm reading here something needs to be done. Like get all the money back for cost of repairs. Better yet give me back the $30,000 plus that we paid when we bought the car.

I have an 03 mazda6. I bought it used in March 2016. 2 months after buying I had to replace the engine due to the lifter ticking. W months into driving the replacement engine threw a rod. I have no choice but to replace the engine once again. I will never oen a mazda ever again.

Just realized what that noise I'm hearing at about 3000 rpm. It's the VVT! Just had the compressor replaced at local Mazda dealer for $1372.00. Now I don't know whether to just sell the car and buy a clunker or put aside more money to get the VVT and associated parts replaced. Never buying another Mazda...

I recently took my Mazda CX-7 in for a check up before my vacation. Everything checked and was good. Drove 2800 miles came home safe. The car however does have an oil leak in the rear main seal so I'm constantly monitoring and maintaining the oil. The fucking vehicle has been a nightmare with repairs. I also had to replace the ac compressor which seized and tore the belt. I'm just trying to find the leak to slow it to sell it ....fuck this car and fuck mazda. As soon as ford got their hands on them these below par shit engines and transmissions came into existence!

At the time of purchase the dealership at the vehicle listed at 80800 or so miles. However the odometer indicate 60800 or so miles. The vehicle now has under 65,500 miles on the odometer. This past Saturday 07/09/2016 the engine developed a skip and the check engine light came on. Drove the vehicle this way for about 2 miles until I got home. I also noticed that the vehicle had lost quite a bit of power. I have a code reader and found the fault code to be P0302, misfire in cylinder 2. Changed all the spark plugs and #2 coil. Made no difference. Monday I drove the vehicle to a local repair shop to diagnose and repair the problem. Late this afternoon the shop owner called me and provided the following information. The #2 cylinder had low compression. Without taking the engine down for an inspection, he believes that the timing chain may have slipped out of proper timing and that a valve in the #2 cylinder either bent as a result or is burnt. Checking with Mazda, the head for this engine is on back order for another 2 weeks. a new complete engine is not available. If the block is okay, the cost of placing the timing chain and head would be in the neighborhood of $3,000. I contacted the local Mazda dealer and spoke with a service rep. After explaining the symptoms I was told the following. That the 08 2.3 engine has been known to have this problem. That this was the initial production of this engine being equipped with a turbo and that the engine components would eventually fail due to this pressure. To replace the complete engine, parts and labor would be about $8,000. That is what I paid for the car before tax and tag. Monday the upper portion of the engine will be disassembled. If the block has not been affected, they will purchase a new head when available and timing chain components. Hopefully these parts have been improved on and that the cost will not exceed $3000. Lesson learned, my first and last Mazda. I would rather own a VW even though they are guilty of mileage tampering. At least their vehicles do not suffer from major engine failure.

They have to honor the warranty you only need to provide proof that service was performed. Even if you did it yourself you only have to give them receipts for supply's purchased. If you do you service yourself always put the date and mileage on the receipt.

While they were changing the AC compressor out we went ahead and changed the serpentine belt and added a new AC belt. The engine would't turn over, sounded like engine seized, and blew fuses, and ultimately would not start again. I've spoken with Mazda customer service, mazda service center, and 3 other master mechanics who have all said they don't know how, but they believe the timing chain skipped time, which caused the pistons to hit all the spark plugs smashing all of them, and after a compression test there was no compression. Mazda service said at this point the only option is to get a new car or a new engine which will be a minimum of $3500. I do not believe a car that has been babied and cared for should have an engine go out after a little over 10 years. It's not right.

No one officially offers the special oil cooler gasket, Mazda is happy to sell it only with the cooler for $450. I found a guy online who sells a home brew version that worked to fix the leak for less than $10. We always paid Mazda to do our oil changes, sometimes they put in different viscosities of oil from what is reccomended by Mazda corporate according to our service records. So now at 125k; We are experiancing louder ticking again after repairing the leak. We have complained numerous times during our ownership about the ticking and have been told "that's normal, they all do that" I brought this to the attention of the dealer (not our regular service advisor) he said it would be $155 to diagnose the issue. Whith approval to diagnose, he came back and said we needed a new timing chain again at 125k. I complained back about this known defect, he kicked me to corporate, who kicked me back to the dealer....The only guy who stood proud, was our regular service advisor, who is getting the thing fixed without cost to us. I feel very lucky on this one. I'm still considering filing a lawsuit as my records are in great order, and Mazda corporate definitely has breached its duty to stand by its defect free implied warranty. Hey Mazda, your cars are ticking time bombs-boom boom. I feel 200k should be reasonable mileage to expect from a well maintained car regarding timing chain wear.

They said there was no problem and probably because of filter or excess oil. The engine blew due to the vvt actuator. I contacted Mazda, and they told me it was "no longer covered" because my vehicle was delivered in Dec 2007 and I was outside the warranty they extended. They also cost me over $300 because Mazda said they had to have it checked by a certified Mazda dealership before they told me it wasn't covered or they would assist. So, I paid Twice to find the same thing. They would not assist even though I had proof of all oil changes done to the vehicle since purchase. All within allotted time and never was there a problem. I still owed $9K and they wanted $9K for a new engine. Not even an offer of a refurbished one. I now had no way to fix it, and had to get another vehicle and continue to pay on the Mazda. I voluntarily released the Mazda to the finance company to auction to which I will continue to pay on a vehicle that blew an engine at 69K miles. My credit is now affected because it shows a voluntary repossession! I will have to pay the $9K for the car over the next 36 months even though I don't own it or face repossession of my other vehicle because they are Co-collateralized. So either pay, or lose my other vehicle. This is unacceptable, and I should not have to pay another dime on the Mazda CX-7. Not to mention I had to purchase (Lease) another vehicle to replace the Mazda which is costing me an additional $480 a month. Mazda is responsible for this.

Last March 2015 we came to have this same issue again at 103000ish miles. At this time we were made aware of a possible known issue that these 2.3 liter Direct Inject Turbo Chargers can overheat and crack their aluminum housing. We have fought the Warranty company to check and replace the Turbo Charger, but they won't stating that it's not a confirmed solution to the issue of oil consumption. We have monitored and maintained the oil levels and changes every 3000 miles (sometimes even less). The vehicle is CONSUMING a quart of oil about every 2 weeks or 200ish miles. Then last night my Fiance ended up on the side of the road because the SUV had started sputtering and I believe the timing chain has stretched again (3rd time!!) and this time may have jumped timing!!! We now have 110,000 miles. 3 timing chains in less that 22,000 miles! What can be done? Please help?

No warning lights with either incident....check engine/check oil.....nothing. I was simply driving down the highway, loud noise, no engine. Very frustrating that such a large company will not back their product and have put so many lives in jeopardy physically, emotionally and financially. I totally support any and all actions to rectify this horrible injustice.

One day my car worked and the next day the heat stopped working and then the car started ticking and it broke down all in one day. I had just gotten an oil change four days before that. I took it to a repair shop and they couldn't figure out why the motor had broken down. All they could tell me was I would have to get a new one. So upon repairing the car, the repair men had discovered that the previous owner had had the same problem and had replaced the engine and sold it. (I'm the second owner) now I'm trying to decide if I should put 3500 into a car for ANOTHER engine or just give it up. It seems Mazda has been having this problem with the engines going out because when I called around to get a new motor, the places started to tell me how many people were calling in trying to find one for the exact same cars. I will never buy another Mazda car.

In October 2014 I phased a 2007 Mazda cx7. It already had the timing and seals replaced in 12/2014 now 13 months later I am leaking from my timing cover/ oil pan and Mazda is saying they wouldn't repair it cause it is passed the 12-12 mark So it's not under any warranty and my extended warranty won't cover cause it is not in conjuction with another failed part.

But I got it off him because it was cheap, in great shape and was missing on cylinder 3. He took it in to the shop and the techs their said all coil overs need to be replaced... the cost was more then he wanted to spend. So, I replace all the coils and all was fine. Changed the oil also and have all of his records of oil changes since new. I drove the car for about a 100 miles when the engine started ticking and shortly after, the ticking went away. I was unable to diagnose the issue since it did not return. A few miles later, it started to miss again and when I got it back home found number 5 cylinder misfiring. So I replaced that coil over figuring I got a bum coil. All was fine and drove to work the next day. Well, I didn't make it. Without warning the engine started to loose power and when I pulled over on the express way it was knocking bad. I shut off the engine checked the oil and it was fine. Started it back up to get off the express way since I was at the exit and bam! Number 6 cylinder went threw the bottom of the pan. So, I got an engine out of a 2009 Mercury Milan with 61,000 miles on it and put it in. I also replaced the cats, which this car has 4 of them and they are prone to failing. All was good and after a couple of hundred miles, boom! It happened again. This time it started to tick and miss and the engine only lasted a few miles after. After ivestigating the possible cause. The only thing I can come up with is the pcm has a bad program causing the catalytic converters to melt causing excessive back pressure and internal cylender heat build up causing a catastrophic engine failure. I'm now parting the car out to try to regain some of the lost cost. What a piece of junk, not the car but the ford engine.

I had the engine pulled out and rebuilt by a machine shop. This seemed to work for a while, but the engine has now started burning a quart of oil every 2000 miles or so. Im expecting this one to blow the same way it did last time when i get to a quart every 1000 miles. its like a ticking time bomb. I also have to shut the car off on the highway and restart in neutral to get the transmission to unlock from third gear. Ive almost swerved of the road and died from the shock of it slamming into third at 60 mph. This car is a death trap!!! I will gladly testify for a lawsuit.

I did all oil changes and maintenance required (even more than usual because I drove a lot of highway miles with my job at the time) 3k-5k came very quickly. Long story shorten fast forward to 2013 when all my issues started after the warranty expired or miles driven past coverage (yes I've gotten good years out this vehicle) but here's where I think Mazda service took advantage of a female Mazda car driver (yes 90% of the services performed was Mazda service center and the other 10% was AAA (? That's another story). Because what the service people I needed to do I did maintenance wise. Oil leaking, tune up's, and in 2015 replacing the turbo. There was many more issues but these are some of the major big ticket repairs. I was told before replacing the turbo had to test the engine first and if it past the turbo would be replaced. According to the service guys engine was good and so the turbo was replaced but less than 4 months later the engine needs replacing (3rd cylinder is misfiring which has been the noted problem since the turbo was replaced and the oil drains) I can not afford to replace the engine or purchase another vehicle. The service guys had to know of the issues Mazda vehicles had but kept taking my money to repair things that the Mazda/Ford company has known about for years. I don't know if any of this makes any sense but I too will never purchase another MAZDA PRODUCT!!!!!!!!

I have spoken with mechanic after mechanic about losing oil but they cant seem to find where it is going or coming from. This vehicle has been nothing but trouble since the first day I bought it home in 2012. The transmission shifted hard from 5th to 4th after running a while and then would go away only to come back every time I WASN'T with the mechanic. Engine light on off on off on off...What the?!! So lets talk about in the END... I was driving to get my sons this past Friday approximately 39 miles to be exact and when I got to Mile 38 I turned the radio down and it sounded like a Tasmanian Devil was inside the motor trying to get OUT!!! Pulled into a Mechanics shop right off the exit and they too confirmed the motor was toast and was also a quart low AGAIN in oil!! So now I have a car that is no longer a car but now a pricey lawn ornament that still has payments left on it and here Mazda sits back and listens to pretty much everyone saying that it is user error!! REALLY mazda? We all have the same ERROR! Look around at all the different sites if you type in "MAZDA ENGINE NOISE" See what you get. A LOT OF ANGRY AND NON RETURNING CUSTOMERS!!! And I am one of them!! Piece of Junk is what you sold us. I had to start a GOFUNDME account because of this! I dont have the money to buy another motor and what sense would that make anyway when all you will do is give me another crappy product to replace the old crappy product! USELESS! Thanks and have a great day mazda....VROOM VROOM...yeah...more like BOOM! BOOM! is what my engine said.

I received the recall letter for the valve and white smoke due to an oil leak in the turbo and allegedly they changed my turbo. They also state now that they updated it at the time (my personal mechanic asked them). Now 2 years later I have the exact same problem and they refuse to fix it because is no longer under warranty (in spite the fact the problem it's the same and it just hasn't been fixed). Now I have documentation available, and the sequence of the narrative is not exact at this moment (as I'm currently not looking at the dates). I think Mazda needs to replace my turbo or my car at this point as all this oil dripping in the turbo may have damaged the catalytic converter, but first and foremost this dangerous!

The car was pre-owned with one owner. During the test drive - I FELL IN LOVE! I have a 3 year old, so the cabin was roomy, the four doors were easy to drive, it was an SUV but handled like a sports car. LOVED IT! I get the vehicle home, park it in my garage (my house just turned 10 years old so the garage has never had fluids on it) I pull out the next morning, return home for lunch with a friend to notice that there is oil on the floor of my garage. I immediately call the dealer I purchased it from, they ask me to drive 80 miles back home to return it so they can have their shop look at it. Driving back home, I heard this knocking noise from the engine & I notice an issue while driving it - having replaced 3 timing chains/belts on previous cars, I told the dealer I wanted the timing chain replaced and the engine checked over. After three weeks, I get my car back. They determined the oil leak was an improper OEM seal in the drain pan, there was a sprocket in the oil pan AND they replaced the timing chain for me... Luckily, the dealer was nice enough to cover these charges. I drive the vehicle from the middle of May 2015 until September with NO issues! Again, LOVING the CX-7! Labor Day Weekend 2015, I noticed that when I turn the vehicle off, the fan is still running and I'm smelling fluids burning... That's when I noticed once again, the oil is leaking and leaking. I returned to work the Tuesday after Labor Day, get in the car with a coworker for a quick coffee run and while driving - I turn the AC on since it was 90 degrees outside, only to feel hot air blowing out. I look down at my temperature gauge to see the car is over-heating! I take the care to a Mom & Pop repair shop in my city. They take a couple of days to diagnose the car & tell me the head gasket needs to be replaced, a $2100 fix. Luckily, I had purchased an extended warranty and my warranty company was going to cover $2000 of the cost - Thinking it was a quick fix, I thought Shoo WEE! So, the mechanics work on the vehicle for 3 weeks (the awesome mechanics managed to bend the head gasket valve because it wasn't in time, they also couldn't get the car back in time, waiting for parts, ect.) After incurring more costs, radiator, pulley bolt, and labor - new total of $2400, I picked the vehicle up on 9/30/15 being told they had replaced all the above AND fixed the oil leak by draining a new drain whole in the oil pan & putting an oversize OEM bolt in. On October 1, 2015 - I had a business trip to take, which was 100 miles from my residence. I arrived to my destination, was idling and noticed my temperature gauge was going up!!!! Obviously, the car went RIGHT back into the shop. On October 2, 2015 - I called the shop. They said that they've sent the head gasket back to the machine shop to check for leaks/bent valves, ect. On Monday, 10/5/15 - I call the shop again... He informs me a rivet wasn't sealed properly but he was putting the car back together. That same day, the mechanic calls me to let me know that the car busted a radiator hose and I couldn't pick it up until Wednesday. On Wednesday, 10/7/15 - I call... The mechanic then tells me the car has blown yet ANOTHER head gasket... So on Friday 10/9/15 - the mechanic tells me that he is getting the car back together and on Saturday 10/10/15, I can pick it up. So, Saturday morning, I call him... He says he's doing a test drive & he will get an underbody wash done and then I can pick it up that afternoon. On Saturday around 13:30, the mechanic calls and says the car blew a radiator this time & he couldn't find one to get that day, he'd need until Monday. After realizing that sugar gets further than vinegar, I try to be patient and understanding. I called him on Monday, 10/12/15 at 17:00 - he told me he's getting the radiator put in right then and there & would have it done in an hour. At 18:30 I called him, he said he's going to test drive it, he's had it idling and I should be able to get it very soon. At 19:45, he calls me and tells me that the car is fine while it's idling but when he drives it, the temp gauge rises.... He now believes that it is the turbo that has caused ALL these issues. My warranty covers $3000 total, I've used $2000 on claim one, and a turbo can be highly expensive - which means money out of my pocket. I'm a working mother with a three year old child, no child support, no additional help from any organization. I've had this car in the shop for what seems like more than I've actually gotten to drive it. If anyone has any info on a class action lawsuit, please let me know. I'd really like to be apart of this.

I bought 2007 Mazda CX-7 with 66000 Miles, did not see any turbocharger oil leaking until changed the oil, the engine light is on, the power lost. The repair cost is over $2000, I am suffering . Can not believe such poor quality because of the defect of turbocharger. Mazda only warrant 60000 miles because they knew it. Such shame!

Took it to monro brake and muffler for the first oil change. 3 months to the day after the oil change at monro the engine blew completely. Took the car to a different monro station close to where it blew up. The service tech there told me that the car had zero oil in it because whoever did the oil change cracked and damaged the oil filter cartridge housing and that's why the engine blew up because it had a slow oil leak due to the damaged housing. He also informed me that monro had received a TSB concerning this issue that not using the correct tool would damage the housing and cause this problem. Realizing that they were responsible, monro paid for a used replacement engine. All of the repair, including locating an engine and changing it was done through Connecticut's Own Mazda. This was the summer of 2009. From that day forward Connecticut's Own Mazda has done every bit of service to my vehicle. Every schedule oil change, brakes, light bulbs, you name it. In April of 2014 the car started making unfavorable engine noises. It was only 1000 miles into its last oil change. So I took it to the Mazda dealership only to be told that these things just happen and I would need a new engine soon. I repeatedly asked the question, "How does this happen on a vehicle that is serviced regularly by the dealership? "No one could give me an answer. They just kept saying "These things happen." Not being satisfied AT ALL with the answer I contacted Mazda USA who contacted the dealership and then so graciously informed me that that there was NOTHING they could do to help me because my vehicle was "Out of Warranty". However if I wanted to purchase a Brand New Engine for close to $6,000 they would take $1,000 off of the price but that was it. Of course this did not include the almost $2,500 installation charge that the dealership wanted to charge me. It gets worse but I don't have time for it all right now. Since all of this I have paid out of pocket (with receipts and bank statements to prove it ) over $4,000 to fix my vehicle through a private mechanic, no thanks to Mazda at all. And on top of that, the power steering is leaking everywhere immediately after the engine rebuild. Mazda is AWFUL. I have researched this issue extensively and found that there are many people with this issue. When I informed Mazda of this they only said; "There is no problem with our 2.3 liter engine and would not stand behind it AT ALL. Something should be done about it and Mazda should be held responsible. Please feel free to use my comments and, or contact me directly. I will be more than happy to help and speak out on this matter.

2005 Mazda 6i, check engine light came on, oil was slightly low, added some, no problems further and a week later the engine blows. Less than 100,000 miles and impossible to find another used motor. My guess is because they ALL blow up!

We purchased the extended warranty only to be told that the dealership we bought the vehicle from not only knew there was a problem with the timing chain, they also reported to the warranty company to see if they could get it replaced before the dealership sold it. So that meant the warranty we bought was already void because it was now considered a "pre existing condition!" We had to pay $1200.00 to have the timing chain fixed. After we got the vehicle back, within 3 days, the check engine light started coming on. Code reader would call for different sensors to be replaced. After replacing all sensors, the vehicle began to be very difficult to start. Turns out, the EGR valve was completely plugged up. So we replaced that and low and behold, I've drive my CX7 for 3 weeks without any problems......... Until today...... Driving home from work, I pressed the gas pedal and the awful eat wining noise started and the power in the engine decreased by about half....... Now it's sitting in the driveway in need of a new turbo!!!!!! I haven't even owned this CX7 for 100 days!!!! This was my first mazda and I can assure you it will be my LAST!!!! I can't believe all these problems and Mazda knew all along and kept selling and have not issues recalls!!!

I did not wait long to get it fixed. Within 2 weeks, my parts arrived and took it in for fixing. After replacing all new parts, the rattle noise is now gone. I purchased a timing kit that has all new parts and the VVT Actuator. However, the check engine light comes on and the engine runs sluggish. It appears that the car/engine does not want to be in-time. My car has been in with the mechanic shop for almost 2 weeks now. My mechanic stated he has taken the engine apart 4 times now and cannot find the issue now with the timing or why it will not hold timing. Is this issue fixable? or is my car now a big piece of metal?

Recently within the last 3-months I was driving on the highway when all of a sudden I hear this whining noise and no power on any incline. I made it home about 40 miles and called my extended warranty company. They said they wouldn't cover any engine problem because my last oil change was more the 7500 miles. I was at the station where I get work done on my cars and they told me their cousin had the same problem and Mazda didn't admit that there was a problem with the turbo going and the timing chain but they repaired it for her. I called Mazda and they didn't admit there was a problem but they did replace the turbo and timing chain at no cost except I had to pay $700 in rental fee's. If there is no problem why are they so fast to replace these parts that cost about $6000 to replace. Two days ago I just came home from driving all day, shut my car off and within 5-minutes my engine was engulfed in flame. The car was destroyed. Now I have been told about this law suit and boy was I lucky not to have been driving when this happened. I'm wondering if anyone else's car has caught fire. The insurance company towed the car and is going to do an inspection to see what might have caused this. My guess is that Mazda is hiding something and until enough people get hurt or die, then they will admit to it. Why do people have to get hurt and die for these huge company's to come forward with the truth. That's why they should pay and pay big time.

I lost power steering , lost power etc. I got the car pulled off the side of the road and I noticed a oil slick about 80 yards long behind my car. Mind you the mileage is only @ 101,000, & I have always maintained my vehicle since I purchased It , oil change every 5000 miles and I have every record pertaining to maintenance to the POS Mazda. I started walking the oil slick to where It started, I noticed chunks of metal in the road and I picked it up... The chunks of metal were my oil pan that blew apart from the rods in the motor coming apart in the motor. I take my car to a shop for them to figure out what happened. Apparently my motor blew 3 rods.... HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE WHEN YOU MAINTAIN THE VEHICLE ???? Mazda AKA Ford built a horrible vehicle and they know it but yet they wont do one thing. I bought my car used , I still owe on it. (3600) I just finished paying off the new motor As of today I have bought : * new motor ($3600) * new oil pan ( $100.00) * new starter (100.00 * new temp sensor ($50.00) * new turbo ($1,200) Such bullshit that myself and others have to go through this, when we bought our vehicles we thought we were going with a good manufacturer but nope. Mazda/ Ford does nothing. Bravo, I WILL NEVER BY A MAZDA AGAIN OR A FORD.

2006 Mazda 6 sport hatchback. Purchased brand new in 2007, now it has 70,000 miles and engine failure. Regular service since new plus 5 weeks in the shop for airbag repair last November. Total lack of quality, this car should not be having these problems until way over 100,000 miles. Not sure it is worth a fix at this point.

I have been on the mazda/ford forums and am not at all the only person this has happened to.. some as low as 64k miles. we also had the all of a sudden transmission no reverse jump gear transmission failure at 37k but fortunately they covered that under warranty. and we never saw better than 23 mpg in this thing.. what a piece of crap!

Three of the four cylinders had to be replaced (one going out 50 miles after getting my car back from the shop), the transfer case needed to be replaced along with a host of other problems. Last week I hear a pop and a bunch noise form under the hood. Turns out I threw a rod that shot through the engine. The engine, starter, turbo, transmission, drive plate, etc. ALL have to be replaces at a cost of $16,000! My extended warranty will not pay because it exceeds the value of the car. I've maintained my car and have receipts to prove it...in fact, I had an oil change 4 days before this occurred. I'm now without a car, not to mention I'm still paying the car note...

Our search starts with the Toyota Venza (new), and the Infinity Q35 (pre-owned) . We visited approximately 5 dealerships the weekend previous to July 4th, 2011 - alot of test drives, alot of negotiations which were close, but not as satisfactory. After not moving the needle as much as we had desired, my wife has an idea to check out the dealership of Mazda in Huntington Beach. We look at the Cx7 & Cx9 (new) and after test driving a few, she decides to look into the Cx7 as she was previously unfamiliar with the vehicle. After mulling options over (blank check was good for up to 40k in financing, 4.1 APR) she decides to purchase the Mazda (24,900). We select a model, which has 13 miles on it - and though others (Venza, Infinity) were her chief desire, she believes that the decision was a good, more economical one. We (she) purchases the vehicle July 4th, 2011. One month in, the front driver tire blows out on the 55 freeway in Costa Mesa. The car is driven to the dealer the next day - to have a tire placed on. The price was surely "surprise surprise" - $250.00. We push to know why the tire was so expensive, it's because the size is new for this size vehicle and there's one maker of the tire. Bridgestone. We pay for it begrudgingly, and go about our way. Fast forward to February 6th, 2015, a shade over 3 years, 6 months of owning the vehicle. The vehicle history is good, maintenance is excellent (my wife is a therapist for children with autism so that's why vehicle choice was extremely important - traveling client to client in administering therapy sessions) and without warning, she cannot reverse. She can drive forward, yet is losing power when the automatic attempts to shift from 1st to 2nd gear, so it jumps from first to 3rd. We take the vehicle to Browning Mazda in Cerritos and we are advised that the transmission needs to be replaced ($3,200.00). 3 years 6 months 64,262 miles, excellent maintenance history, & this vehicle needs a NEW transmission? This felt like a terrible joke. The power train warranty? 3y/60k. Expired just over 4,000 miles ago. If there's an engine issue, we usually receive a warning (ie - check engine light flashes on when the oil hits around 3,500) - yet for a failed transmission the vehicle took a dump without warning. We contact Mazda (corporate) & are advised later in the day that they would pay half of the ticketed amount. That's still egregious as there wouldn't be a vehicle sold if most buyers knew that at such ridiculously low mileage, the transmission would fail them. We retrieve the vehicle and have it looked at for two more opinions and apparently there are no codes indicating the transmission is bad, yet it's obviously the transmission according to the mechanic as indicated simply by the test drive. One transmission mechanic wanted to advise us that Mazda contains many Ford parts, including the transmission and the parts itself. He opens a book, shows a Ford Escape transmission cover (as an example to start) & shows the transmission cover for a Mazda Cx7. The covers??? Same shape. Same size. Same diameter. The only difference was the material each was made out of. He also advised us that Ford held a controlling stake in Mazda for a very long time and that Mazda in engine make up is similar to many Ford vehicles. I'm thankful for such insight as now, my wife, she's apparently back to square one now & cannot trust a Mazda vehicle. We will just take it on the chin, pay the dealer, trade it in and get into the vehicle she wanted to originally (Toyota Venza) as it has a powertrain of 7y/100k, and we have another blank check and a few we are willing to pay more of a premium for now as opposed to settling (which appears now, that we did). My advice, if you could help it remain in a Toyota (I drive a Lexus and plan to remain with Toyota) or Honda (my wife bought a Civic new in 2001, drove it to 2011 without issue, netting 170k miles before selling to a UCI college student, then purchasing this Mazda vehicle). If my story helps you even a little bit, I am definitely thankful. This experience feels completely underhanded and we feel hoodwinked.

It was a complete nightmare and a story that many people cannot believe.Over $3000 in repairs on the trip (not to mention hundreds spent on rental cars, hotels and tow trucks) and we are now waiting for a new (or used) engine because the VVT failure destroyed the engine and kept us from continuing our trip. We have been on a "waiting list" for a new or used engine since July of 2013 ... and are still #20-something on the list. That right there should tell you there's a HUGE problem! I changed the oil every 3,000 miles on that car - even took it to the dealer to have it changed - I LOVED my CX7 ... so they cannot blame lack of oil changes for the problem! I just cannot believe that Mazda can have such a catastrophic defect in their engine and not be held accountable. We are now looking at another ~$6000 to replace the engine on a car that was 6 years old when a known defect left us stranded. Did I mention that the vehicle has also had the radiator replaced AND a new transmission? Oh ... AND our 2001 MAZDA Tribute, in 2010 while parked at my husband's office, caught on fire from some sort of short circuit in a control panel. Needless to say ... we are DONE with Mazda!

It immediately shifted to 6th gear once reaching the flat area of roadway and appeared to drive normally the distance home (3 miles) unless the road inclined. The light remained on. Nervous, I arranged a flat bed tow the 26 miles to avoid any damage to the car figuring I was playing it safe and due to no available service being open, I had to wait til Monday to have the car towed. At the dealer, they started it right up and said it seemed normal except for the light being on so I relaxed and walked to rent a car across the street for a one day term like they told me to. I asked how long this would take and how long shall I make a rental contract for and they said "do what you have to, We have no idea right now." Today I called when I still heard no news about the car, I finally got a "preliminary" report that a timing change issue occurred the computer reported a VVT issue and they were still in the process of estimating damage, costs and would call when they could talk about it. I was devastated as I hung up the phone. My car was in perfect condition and maintained by Mazda service only at every recommended service and oil change schedule. Having only 78,000 miles I find it unbelievable this happened at all. Mazda USA said they "May" make an exception to the 70,000 extension given in 2012 which I never even knew about and should have as the sole owner of the car. Now that it is 8,000+ miles over that courtesy extension because they knew of the defect I will have to wait a full review of records and Mazda conferring the dealer about what is going on. While this happens I am out the cost of the tow, and rental fees for a car with no indication from anyone as to how long this will all take. I have always bragged about my car and the amazing service I have been given by Mazda but today, I feel like I paid $35,000 for a car I will never be able to drive again and have no way to replace it right now. Devastated Cx7 Owner hoping her McZoomy will live to drive again..

She will be very interested to hear about Mazda's incompetence and ridiculous ways. I have lost all respect for Mazda. If they would cover this up, what else would they cover up? This has costed consumer's nationwide thousands of dollars out of their pockets when it should have been Mazda. I'd rather buy a Camry with the horrible recall on it than buy another Mazda. At least Toyota owned up to their mistakes and tried to make it right from their position. Mazda, you should be ashamed of your lying and inconsideration to your "loyal" customers. You probably have ruined people's lives by sucking their money away from them. Good luck in the future Mazda, but never expect me to every consider buying one of your cars again. No respect.
