Nearly One Million Spa Pumps Sold at Costco, Walmart Recalled Over Fires, Fatality Reports

AirJet and HydroJet spa pumps may overheat or catch on fire, potentially causing serious property damage and life-threatening injuries.

Federal safety officials are instructing consumers to immediately stop using Bestway AirJet and HydroJet spa pumps, following reports of problems with the products overheating and catching on fire, including at least one incident that resulted in a fatality.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the spa pump recall on September 12, indicating that the plastic housing may ignite, posing a risk of property damage or life-threatening injuries.

Approximately 866,000 spa pumps are impacted by the recall, which were designed to provide heating, filtration and massage features. They can also inflate and deflate the liners of certain hot tubs. However, the CPSC indicates that the products could present a serious fire hazard.

The CPSC is aware of at least three fires involving the spa pumps, including one that resulted in significant property damage and another that caused a house fire, which led to a fatality. While no other injuries have been reported, there are seven additional incidents being investigated.

The Bestway AirJet and HydroJet spa pumps involved in this recall include model numbers: P05332, P05339, P05711, P05807, P07000, P07001, P05511, P07034 and P07572. The model number can be found printed on a label on the side or back of the pump.

Consumers are being urged to immediately stop using the recalled spa pumps and are also warned to examine any pumps that may have been sold separately. Inflatable liners that may be packaged with the recalled pumps are sold under the brand names SaluSpa, Coleman and Hydro-Force. These brand names are printed on the side of the liner.

The recalled spa pumps were sold online and at stores, including Bestway USA, Amazon, Costco, Walmart, Sam’s Club, QVC, RuralKing and Spreetrail from May 2021 to May 2024 for $400-$790.

Customers should contact Bestway to receive a free replacement or a refund of $100 for AirJet spa pumps, or $189 for HydroJet spa pumps.
