Nitrous Oxide Side Effects From Long-Term Use Linked to Paralysis, Nerve Damage in Lawsuits Neurological injuries and addiction risks tied to recreational nitrous oxide use have prompted FDA warnings and a wave of product liability lawsuits. July 2, 2025 Russell Maas Add Your Comments As flavored nitrous oxide canisters become more widely available in vape shops and smoke stores nationwide, regulators and personal injury lawsuits are sounding the alarm about dangerous side effects that can result from prolonged inhalation. Nitrous oxide has traditionally been used in dentistry and food preparation. Although it is commonly known as “laughing gas,” it is intended for use in carefully controlled environments. However, a wave of consumer products have been introduced in recent years, which appear to be designed for recreational inhalation, rather than culinary use. Sold under names like “whippets,” these nitrous oxide canisters are often packaged in bright colors, infused with candy-like flavors, and promoted on social media platforms such as TikTok and YouTube. Despite being labeled as kitchen-grade items, they are frequently displayed alongside vaping supplies, signaling their true appeal to young users chasing a short-lived euphoric high. In response to the escalating misuse of these products, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a national nitrous oxide warning earlier this year, indicating that recreational inhalation of whippets has been linked to serious neurological injuries, including nerve damage, paralysis and cognitive decline. The agency identified several specific brands of nitrous oxide tied to this growing public health concern, including: Galaxy Gas GreatWhip FastGas ExoticWhip Monster Gas InfusionMax Goo Sticks Baking Bad MassGass NITROX Whip-it! HotWhip Euro Gas Miami Magic Cloud 9ine Cosmic Gas As users begin to suffer from debilitating side effects, many are now pursuing nitrous oxide lawsuits against manufacturers and distributors for failing to warn about the risks of neurological damage, paralysis and cognitive decline. In this featured post, AboutLawsuits highlights the serious side effects of nitrous oxide inhalation, as documented in medical case studies, FDA safety warnings, and recent lawsuits filed by injured users. Serious and life-threatening injuries have been linked to the use of nitrous oxide products marketed for inhalation. Lawsuits are being filed by those who suffered injuries or lost loved ones after using flavored canisters sold through smoke shops. Learn More SEE IF YOU QUALIFY FOR COMPENSATION Nitrous Oxide Linked to Permanent Disabilities and Brain Damage Dating as far back as 2015, medical case reports have warned that recreational use of nitrous oxide, especially through whippets, can cause permanent neurological injuries. Published in Practical Neurology, a landmark study by researchers from Oxford and University College London documented three cases of young adults who suffered serious harm after repeatedly inhaling nitrous oxide from whipped cream canisters. Despite appearing safe and being marketed for culinary use, these nitrous oxide products caused irreversible nerve damage, paralysis and cognitive impairment, long before the current spike in recreational sales and abuse. 🔹Nitrous Oxide Nerve Damage Injuries A 22-year-old man presented with numbness below the knees that spread to his hands, along with muscle weakness, balance problems and loss of coordination. He had been using approximately 15 whippets per day, inhaling nitrous oxide from pressurized cream canisters. While his vitamin B12 blood level appeared normal, methylmalonic acid levels were dangerously elevated, confirming functional B12 inactivation and demyelinating neuropathy. He was misdiagnosed with Guillain–Barré syndrome and treated with IVIG before doctors identified nitrous oxide as the cause. After B12 injections, he partially recovered but continued to walk with a cane six months later. 🔹Paralysis and Disability From Nitrous Oxide Inhalation A 27-year-old man was hospitalized with progressive leg weakness and sensory loss after seeking nitrous oxide during repeated ER visits for self-inflicted injuries. Although initially treated for a possible immune disorder, doctors discovered he was deliberately dislocating his patella to obtain access to nitrous oxide for pain relief. Eventually, he developed flaccid paraparesis and permanent paraplegia. Blood tests confirmed severe B12 deficiency, and nerve biopsy showed ischemic neuropathy with small vessel damage. Despite high-dose B12 therapy, he remains paralyzed and in a wheelchair years later. 🔹NO Abuse Leads to Spinal Cord Damage and Bladder Dysfunction A 23-year-old woman using nitrous oxide for pain and recreationally through balloons at nightclubs developed burning limb pain, sensory loss and bladder dysfunction. MRI scans were initially normal, delaying diagnosis. Over time, she experienced worsening gait instability, absent reflexes and signs of spinal cord degeneration. Her B12 levels were borderline, but homocysteine was elevated, confirming functional deficiency. After aggressive B12 replacement, she made a full recovery, but her case shows how rapidly neurological symptoms can escalate from recreational use. FDA Lists Severe Side Effects From Nitrous Oxide Abuse However, it was only amid a recent surge in recreational sales of nitrous oxide through vape shops and online retailers that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) finally issued a public warning in March 2025, outlining the life-threatening side effects linked to whippet use, stating: “Inhaling nitrous oxide can result in a range of symptoms and serious health problems, from abnormal blood counts, asphyxiation, blood clots, frostbite, headache, impaired bowel and bladder function, lightheadedness, limb weakness, loss of consciousness, numbness, palpitations, paralysis, psychiatric disturbances (delusions, hallucinations, paranoia, depression), tingling, trouble walking, vitamin B12 deficiency, and in some cases, death.” The agency emphasized that although these products are labeled for culinary use, they are widely misused, especially by young consumers seeking a quick high. ⚠️Common NO Abuse Side Effects Reported to FDA Nerve Damage (Peripheral Neuropathy): Nitrous oxide inactivates vitamin B12, a key nutrient needed for nerve function. Prolonged exposure can destroy the protective myelin sheath around nerves, leading to numbness, tingling and loss of coordination. Spinal Cord Degeneration (Subacute Combined Degeneration): Long-term use can cause irreversible damage to the spinal cord’s dorsal and lateral columns, impairing balance, fine motor control and gait. Cognitive Impairment: Oxygen deprivation and B12 deficiency affect brain cells, leading to memory loss, slowed thinking and difficulty concentrating. Paralysis: Advanced cases of nerve and spinal cord damage may result in partial or complete paralysis, often accompanied by speech loss or limb immobility. Psychiatric Effects: Abuse has been linked to hallucinations, dissociation and psychosis, especially in users with underlying mental health conditions. Oxygen Deprivation (Hypoxia): Inhaling large volumes of nitrous oxide can displace oxygen in the lungs, leading to dizziness, fainting, cyanosis (bluish skin) and in severe cases, death. The agency urged users experiencing symptoms to seek immediate medical care and warned retailers against marketing nitrous oxide for recreational use. ADD COMMENTS Nitrous Oxide Lawsuits Outline Permanent Injuries Two of the most high-profile lawsuits filed to date come from plaintiffs Jenna Combel and Jacob Iannotti, both of whom allege they suffered life-altering side effects from prolonged whippet abuse. 🔹Lawsuit Filed Over Paralysis and Spinal Cord Damage Caused by Whippet Use Jenna Combel, a 26-year-old from New Orleans, began purchasing flavored nitrous oxide canisters from local vape shops in 2019. Over time, her use escalated to daily inhalation. On November 6, 2023, she was hospitalized after losing the ability to speak or move her limbs. Physicians diagnosed her with severe B12 deficiency, partial paralysis and subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord. According to her lawsuit, she continues to experience cognitive decline, motor dysfunction, and chronic nerve pain. “As a result of nitrous oxide abuse, [Combel] suffered severe neurological injuries, including but not limited to permanent spinal cord degeneration, peripheral neuropathy, and partial paralysis.” 🔹Nitrous Oxide Lawsuit Alleges Galaxy Gas Led to Nerve Damage and Memory Loss In another case, Jacob Iannotti of Georgia claims he became addicted to Galaxy Gas products after encountering them on TikTok and YouTube. He believed they were safe due to misleading “FDA approved” claims. After months of use, he began to suffer from dissociation, numbness, coordination problems and weakness in his limbs. Doctors later confirmed he had sustained nerve damage consistent with B12-related neuropathy. “The prolonged abuse of nitrous oxide led to subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord, vitamin B12 deficiency, and cognitive impairment affecting [Iannotti’s] memory and speech.” Both lawsuits argue that manufacturers and retailers, including vape shops and online distributors, intentionally downplayed these dangers while using colorful packaging and dessert-themed flavors to attract teen consumers. With an estimated one million or more nitrous oxide users across the United States, public health officials warn that recreational inhalation is rapidly becoming a national epidemic, particularly among teens and young adults. These lawsuits are just the beginning of what is expected to become a wave of nitrous oxide injury and wrongful death claims in the months and years ahead, as more victims come forward with reports of addiction, paralysis, and lasting neurological harm linked to flavored whippet products marketed for abuse.
