Peloton Original Series Bike+ Recall Issued After Fall Injuries Reported: CPSC

Peloton Original Series Bike+ Recall Issued After Fall Injuries Reported: CPSC

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning individuals to stop using more than 800,000 Peloton exercise bikes due to the potential for the seat to break during use.

The Peloton Original Series Bike+ recall was announced on November 6, after the manufacturer received three reports of the seat post breaking and detaching, leading to at least two injuries caused by falls.

Peloton bikes are stationary exercise machines that allow users to clip their feet into the pedals and follow live or on-demand cycling classes from home using an attached touchscreen. Subscription plans provide access to instructors, community features, and real-time performance metrics displayed on a leaderboard to help motivate users.

While Peloton bikes are generally considered safe, the company has issued several recalls over the years. In this case, a sudden seat post failure during use can cause the rider to lose balance and fall, posing a risk of injury since their feet remain secured to the pedals.

The current recall affects about 833,000 Peloton Original Series Bike+ units with model number PL02 and serial numbers beginning with the letter “T.” The serial number can be found inside the front fork, behind the front fork or behind the flywheel. The bike measures about 4 feet long by 2 feet wide and features an adjustable seat and handlebar.

The bikes were sold at Peloton and Dick’s Sporting Goods stores nationwide, as well as online at onepeloton.com, ebay.com, Amazon.com, and dickssportinggoods.com, from January 2020 through April 2025 for about $2,495.

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the recalled exercise bikes and contact Peloton for a free replacement seat post, which can be self-installed.

Customers can contact Peloton at 866-679-9129 from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. ET, Monday through Friday, or visit support.onepeloton.com and click on “Product Recalls” for information on requesting a free replacement seat post and installation instructions.

Peloton Safety Risks and Recalls

Various kinds of sports equipment, such as Peloton electric bikes and treadmills, have been linked to injuries over the years, with one report finding that more than 6 million people were treated in emergency rooms in 2023 for incidents involving hazardous consumer products, with sports equipment and home furnishings responsible for the most deaths.

Also in 2023, about 2.2 million Peloton bikes were recalled for similar issues involving the seat post breaking during use, causing more than 10 injuries.

The prior recall came after a high-profile Peloton treadmill recall issued in 2021, following the death of a 6-year-old child who was pulled under the machine, in addition to nearly 30 additional reports of serious injuries caused by the treadmill’s dangerous design.
