Publix and Fresh Express Spinach Recall Issued Due To Health Risk from Listeria Monocytogenes

Federal health officials have announced a bagged spinach recall, warning that certain Publix and Fresh Express brand spinach products may pose a risk of listeria food poisoning, potentially causing serious and potentially life-threatening infections.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the spinach recall on December 15, warning consumers to stop eating bagged spinach products branded under the Fresh Express and Publix product names that were sold in multiple states throughout the U.S.

The recalled spinach may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, which poses a particularly serious risk for vulnerable individuals, including children, senior adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms, including fever, headaches, stiffness, abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea from listeria monocytogenes infections, while pregnant women may suffer more severe consequences, including miscarriages and stillbirths.

Fresh Express & Publix Spinach Recall

The spinach recall was issued after routine testing by the Florida Department of Agriculture identified the presence of listeria in a randomly selected package of Fresh Express spinach. After being notified of the positive sample, Fresh Express immediately began instructing distributors and retailers to remove potentially impacted bagged spinach products from store shelves.

The recall impacts Fresh Express Spinach sold in 8 ounce bags, and Publix Spinach sold in 9 ounce bags, that were distributed throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, including packaged spinach kits with product code G332 and use-by dates of December 14, 2023 or December 15, 2023.

Consumers may contact the Fresh Express consumer response center at (800) 242-5472 from 8 A.M. to 7 P.M. EST for a refund or for more information on the recall.
