Redken Mousse Recall Issued Due to Risk of Can Rupturing

About 1 million bottles of Redken Guts 10 spray mousse have been recalled from stores after reports of dozens of cans exploding.

The Redken mousse recall was announced on April 12 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) after Redken received at least 41 reports of cans rupturing, gushing out their contents. Although there have been no injuries reported in connection with the defective Redken spray mousse aerosol cans, this does pose a risk for consumers.

The CPSC reports that the aerosol cans’ liners can corrode over time, creating a risk that the cans may rupture.

The recall affects about 1 million units of Redken Guts 10 Volume Spray Mousse Foam in the 10.58-ounce and 2-ounce cans. The recall includes any cans with lot codes that do not contain G or H as the third digit and the following lot codes: 32G10Y, 32G11Y, 32G20Y, 32G21Y, 32G23Y, 32G40Y, 32G41Y, 32G60Y, 32G61Y, 32G62Y, and 32G70Y. The cans are silver with black writing and have “Redken” and “10” printed on the front. The lot codes are printed on the bottom of the cans.

The defective Redken spray mousse cans were sold at hair salons and beauty supply stores across the U.S. from January 1998 through February 2011 for between $4 and $16.

The CPSC recommends that consumers immediately stop using the spray mousse cans, copy the product’s lot code and then empty the can into a waste container in a well-ventilated area before discarding it. Consumers can use the lot code to contact Redken for information on how to receive a refund. Customers can call Redken at 1-888-241-9504.

Like some of you, I had this product for awhile and did not realize there had been a recall. The day before Thanksgiving there was what sounded like a bomb going off in my house. When I checked the middle bedroom, I saw the exploded can on the floor, mousse all over the floor and mirrors. It also broke a plastic organizer it was in. I took photos. There were no personal injuries due to the explosion.

This is a warning for anyone having Redken Gut 10 Mousse in their vanity. I realize I had this product for quite some time but on September 24, 2019 at 2 AM my husband and I were awakened by a very loud explosion. We checked the house, looked outside, and in our basement but found absolutely nothing. It was very scary. The next day I was in one of our bathrooms and noticed the bottom drawer of our vanity was open. I tried to close it and found it was off the track. When I really looked inside I found dried product ALL OVER inside the drawer. Laying in the midst of it all was the gray can of Gut 10 Mousse with the side of the can blown out of it. The force of the explosion was strong enough to blow the drawer open and off the track. In addition it blew the back of the drawer completely off!!! I am grateful that I or one of my granddaughters was not trying to use the product when this happened. If you have this product in your home please get rid of it immediately.

A can of the mousse exploded yesterday while I was at work and when I opened the closet door all of my hair products came falling out. There was a large hole in the sheetrock in the wall and there were pieces of sheetrock and white powder and sticky mousse everywhere. Luckily no one was hurt.

This happened to me a few hours ago. Scared the crap out of me and my cats. Now I will be spending the night cleaning the mousse that got everywhere in my closet. Not to mention the smell. My neighbors dog (I live in a condo) was freaking out for about 10 minutes, it was that loud. This has been going on since 2011? I worked in a salon for a while that carried the product and never heard of this issue till now.

I was sitting watching TV with my two pups along side me & a boom went off. I went outside with a flashlight looking up and down the driveway , went down to the basement & was shocked to find the linen closet door open with a disaster in side. The Redkin can was split from top to bottom and pieces were all over with a horrible chemical smell. This would have maimed someone if they were near it. Where is Redkin designing and making these killer can products?

A can of this mousse just blew out the back of my wardrobe. I thought the chimney had fallen on the house. Shelves broken, brackets shattered. What a mess.

Dee
My can exploded last night inside my bathroom cabinet. Luckily I had the door open or I think it would have blown the doors off.

Thomas
I experienced an explosion the other night. The can was in my daughter’s room and it made quite a mess. I was fortunate to avoid stepping on any of the sharp shrapnel, and had quite a mess to clean up. I still have the can. I had never heard of any recall.

Bobby
So this has been going on since 2011? And there are still cans exploding like bombs? I call BS.

May 9, 2019 10:45 pm. I was in bathroom after shampooing my hair. I had just put mouse (another brand) on my hair when there was a loud explosion. The Guts 10 can had exploded and went all over me and the bathroom. I had to shampoo again. Also, went to doctor with eye problems, irritated skin on face, and roaring in ear. I have a scratch on cornea of eye. Also, knocked hole in Sheetrock in bathroom as well as causing a split in one of the shelves. There is mousse all over the entire bathroom. Also, there are pieces of metal from the can and pieces of adhesive from the lining on the floor, walls and every item in the bathroom. It knocked caps off of bottles and broke a bottle of perfume, which also went everywhere. I did not know about the recall. I really like Redken products, but I am now afraid of them. Who knows what might happen with the other products. I could have very easily been blinded. Hopefully, my eyes and ear will heal. It will take some time for my nerves to settle down. I am afraid of all my hair products now.

Oh my goodness! I had no idea about this recall, but I came home from a week long vacation to find that my can of Redken Guts spray had exploded in my bathroom cabinet. I am so thankful that my 2 young daughters and myself were not injured in the explosion! I Googled Redken can exploding because I couldn’t believe what I found. The bottle literally exploded. You should see the pictures!

Sally
Wow! I had cleaned out my cabinets a few months ago. There was no expiration date on the can so I decided to keep it as I am a Redken user. I did not know that there had been a recall on the item. I can echo pretty much everything that has been said, and I am thankful that I wasn’t anywhere close when it exploded. It blew the door open, caused a shelf to come down, and blew out everything in the cabinet tower that was on that shelf and below. I had quite the mess on my hands as products were blown a good six feet away. I do have a concern and that is a few new cans of hairspray are dented as well as a volumizing spray. Does that put them at risk for exploding? That is a concern.

Our daughter has been out of the house for a number of years, so I was very surprised when I went into her bathroom and found the vanity doors were blown open and almost everything under the sink was laying all over the floor along with a burst can of Redken 10 product. What a mess, the only good thing was that no one was around when the can exploded.

Anita
Redken Guts exploded in our cabinetry. Door flew open, other bottles & stuff flew out onto the countertop & floors. Sticky hair product everywhere. Major mess to clean up. My husband thought that a tree hit our house.

Mara
Same thing happened to me as above my Redken 10 can blew up made a horrible mess very very scary

September 8, 2018. . Had not heard about a recall nor read about these problems. This product is still being sold! We we’re awakened by a loud explosion and found that a Redken Guts 10 had exploded on a bathroom shelf with enough force to knock at least a dozen other products off the shelf. What a mess, but thankful no one was in the bathroom at the time of the exosion.

I came home from work yesterday & opened my bedroom door. My room had looked as though it had been vandalized. My Makeup & other hair products that were on my dresser was scattered all over my floor in front of my dresser. My dresser mirror had something apparently looked to be smeared all over it as well as the top of my dresser. Come to find out I had a bottle of Redken Guts 10 that had exploded. It broke the bottom left side of my dresser mirror. I do not want to sue Redken over the situation but do feel that they should be held responsible for what their product has done to my dresser as well as all of the others that had incidents where it caused damage to their homes. I thought OMG what if I had been holding the can when it exploded, sleeping in my bed which is close by my dresser or getting ready for work that could have really done a lot of harm to me. I will NEVER purchase another REKEN product again . I never saw or heard anything about a recall on the product. I will be contacting REKEN.

bob
same stuff blew up early in the am. what a mess, could have been a lot worst. My wife is a beautician imagine if you were using this product on a customer. NOT GOOD

Brooke
Pretty much the same story! Laying in bed just about to doze off and thought I had been shot! My husband woke up grabbing his gun! Got up to investigate and found a can of Redken Guts had exploded under my cabinet! Blew the doors open, dented one and ruined a lot of other stuff that was in there. That can has been under there for 5+ years and had never heard of anything like that nor did I hear about a recall. Had a hard time going back to sleep after cleaning up that mess!

Jack
I was just sitting in my living room when I heard a tremendous boom. Went to the bathroom and saw a hole in the wall, the medicine cabinet destroyed and mouse covering everything. The Redken can had exploded. I can’t believe no one has been seriously injured.

Kathy
Apparently my Guts can exploded while I was at work. Discovered the mess underneath double sink vanity later in the evening. Explosion was so forceful it broke pvc sink piping. Had to have sink repaired. Explosion also cracked white plastic “drawer” bin where makeup was stored. Foam mess covered interior cherry cabinets and all misc. items. Took quite a while to clean up plus have new plumbing. Did not know about recall. Will not buy product again.

I was turning off the TV and had put the dogs out for their last bathroom break before going into their kennels for the night (It was 10 PM) when there was a loud explosion heard from the back of the house. The dogs ran back into the house with fear written all over their faces. Imagine my shock when I entered my master bathroom to find a cabinet door blown open and debris all over the floor and walls. It was a mess, but more importantly it was scary…as I didn’t know what had happened. I later learned about the Guts 10 and found shrapnel from the exploded can everywhere. I kept the largest piece for evidence.

Karen
OMG!!! Sitting watching tv just about ready to go to bed and heard a loud explosion. Scared the you know what out of me! Sounded like a bomb just went off in the bedroom. Went and looked and we were shocked – looked like a bomb went off. Blew the doors almost off the vanity cabinet, glass shattered throughout the bedroom and bath, stuff everywhere. Have never seen anything like it. The cause? Redken Guts 10. Unbelievable the amount of damage to the cabinet, wall, shower, etc., not to mention that the area is now condemned for the night. Seriously thought it was an explosion of the house. Will never forget it, and we know one thing, we will go through everything in the house tomorrow and toss out anything that has Redken on it. Was not given any notice of a recall. They shouldn’t even be allowed to sell their products anymore. Picture can’t even begin to be described, however we have several as well as videos. It blew not only the cabinet and it’s contents all over, however also went under door to the latrine, on the bed, and throughout the bedroom, so I guess we won’t be in there tonight. This is crap. I can only thank GOD that I had waited the extra 5 minutes to wash my face and brush my teeth, and had decided to wait until the show I was washing was over. Redken needs to go!!!

joseph
Sitting having evening cocktail when explosion followed by debris falling noise came from bathroom. Thought the roof had collapsed under snow load but like others a Reken spray can had exploded in the linen closet blowing out 3 cabinet doors and closet contents. Plus spraying walls and floor with sticky junk. A real mess and required carpentry work. Received no recall notice and still going on 6 years later!!!

Denise
Sunday night I had a can of Redken Guts 10 explode in my bathroom mirror cabinet. It sounded like a bomb. It broke through the bottom of my cabinet and sprayed everywhere – what a mess. This product is extremely dangerous. I was not aware of the recall. I took pictures and sent to my family and friends. Now I have to buy a new mirror cabinet. The recall notice should be in every salon and customers should be notified. This was very scary.

Yesterday I took my wife to work … (‘cause that’s what some of us retirees do when our spouse is still working). When I got home I encountered some serious destruction in our bathroom. My first thought was to check the rest of the house for any other vandalism and to check the garage to make sure my wife’s car was still there. Thankfully, everything else was alright. Back to the bathroom … what a mess! Long story short – an old can of Redken Guts 10 (aerosol) Spray Mousse had exploded! Lot # EX322C 14:05 UPC # 43877 05794 3 It blew a mirrored door completely off a bathroom cabinet and scattered the cabinet’s contents throughout the small bathroom. Less than an hour before that my wife had been in the direct line of fire. Thank God she had somewhere else to be when it happened! When the Redken blew, it tore open a couple plastic product bottles. One of them was a pink Caladryl lotion. The pink splatter throughout the room was a pretty good indication of just how intense the explosion had been. I wasn’t terribly surprised to find we were not the first. Redken had issued a recall more than five and a half years ago – April 12, 2011. Somehow, we didn’t get that memo. Unfortunately, these cans are still out there and still exploding. Comments on this page indicate at least six others have exploded since last June. And these are just the ones that were here. Obviously, the problem still exists.

Just had a can explode in cabinet in our bathroom. Sounded like a bomb went off. Blew the cabinet apart an everything in it. Scared us to death. Very lucky no one was in the bathroom. I also have pictures. This was a very violent explosion. Vary scary.

Kim
This bottle just explode in my house! I thought a bomb went off and it nearly caused my husband to have a heart attack! Who was sitting nearby. The cabinet doors blew opened and other things flew The can was blown in pieces with a hunk that I cant even find because its in slivers of metal across the room! There is one hell of a mess! And my heart is still pounding! I am a licensed hairstylist and I was never told about this recall! Done with Redkin! Have pictures if I can upload but you may see them public on my fb! Very scary guys someone could be badly injured by this! Kim Opfar from Pitts PA!

I came home from a vacation to find my tri-fold mirrored medicine cabinet hanging off of my bathroom wall with contents lying all around in sink and on floor. All 3 mirrors were swung open and chunks of the wood and brackets holding the shelves were in bits and pieces on the vanity and floor. You could see where something liquid had run down along the walls, even up to 6 feet away. Sticky dried stuff was all over the floor. As I examined the contents from the cabinet, I found the can of Redkin 10 Guts volume spray foam still standing in the top right corner of cabinet (it was stuck to the shelf with the sticky stuff even as the cabinet was hanging off of the wall!), but the top little spray nozzle, the tube from inside, and the whole top round piece had exploded off and was on the counter and in the sink. The plastic lid was ripped apart into many little pieces laying all through out the shelf and floor. Luckily, the bottom brackets had held the cabinet up or the whole cabinet would have been in the floor with broken mirrors. Im just glad we weren’t home at the time and no one was injured. The mess to clean up and replacement of cabinet was enough to have to deal with!

Donald
I was washing my face in the sink when there was a tremendous explosion in the small closet behind me. A Redken Guts 10 can had exploded and sprayed its contents inside the closet. The top of the can was blown off and sent flying inside the closet. Luckily, the can itself was intact and no metal fragments had been spewed outward and I was not injured.

Sheila
OMG! Purging products when a can on the bathroom counter explodes! Face and arm cut and bruised ? Worse corneal abrasions and ears are affected!

Stuart
As with everyone else, a can of Redken Guts 10 exploded under our sink last night. Same results, blew the doors open on our cabinet, destroyed several other bottles of product, and made a hell of a mess. Nobody was harmed, screwed up a good nights sleep. We are thankful that my wife wasn’t holding on to the can when this happened. It could have seriously injured her.

Rita
I just had a can of Redken Mousse to explode in my bathroom closet. Sounded like a bomb. It dented a can of hair spray that was sitting on the shelf and blew open bottles of shampoo, etc. My bathroom closed is a mess, with mousse everywhere. Glad no one got hurt. This is way dangerous. My last Redken purchase for sure.

Laura
I was laying in bed tonight and there was a loud explosion from my bathroom. Exactly what Susan and Glenn reported. Blew my cabinet doors open..broken and dented products. Even dented my Sheetrock inside the cabinet. I have two cans of red ken guts. One silver with black lettering which didn’t explode and a white can with black and blue lettering which blew up like a bomb. Scarey.

Glenn
I came home to find a can of Redken Mousse exploded, just like Susan reports above. It was in a cabinet under the sink. The can was ripped into two parts, half of it still inside the cabinet and half of it on the bathroom floor. About a third of the contents of the cabinet had been blow out onto the floor of bathroom, meaning that the cabinet doors had been blown open. Got some interesting photos.

Linda
I just had my can explode under my sink, it sounded like a bomb went off.

Susan
I was sitting in my room when an explosion occurred in the adjoining bathroom. It was so loud I thought the house was exploding. It was so powerful that it blew both vanity doors open, puncturing a bottle of shampoo, a container of Epsom salts and spreading debris throughout the under sink area and into the bathroom area. There are little metal pieces every where and chunks of clotted mouse. This will be quite a job to clean up. It was very frightening and my heart is still racing!

Scott
I was organizing my beAuty products the other dAy and my can of redken 10 guts 32g11y exploded And bruised my arm. I was looking up to see if it happened and saw this recall. Where do i go from here. I took pictures of the large bruise on my arm. And have proof of the can,it’s codes, everything.

Debra
I just read the recall information about the Redken hair product which I happen to have in my possession. I called the number listed on the web for questions and naturally, got a recording. Why should I attempt to empty the contents of the can “in a well-ventilated area” when the item may burst under pressure???? Is that not why there is a recall??? Only in Americacould this happen.
