Roblox Addiction Lawsuits To Be Coordinated With Other Video Game Claims in California JCCP At least 18 video game addiction lawsuits against Roblox have been added to an Judicial Counsel Coordinated Proceeding (JCCP) in California state court, involving similar allegations against a variety of gaming platforms. July 23, 2025 Michael Adams Add Your Comments A California judge has added 18 Roblox lawsuits to the state’s coordinated video game addiction proceedings, expanding the scope of the litigation to include claims that Roblox platform was intentionally designed to exploit children and fuel compulsive use. Roblox is an online gaming platform launched in 2006, which allows users to create, share, and play user-generated games in immersive virtual worlds. It is especially popular among children and teens, featuring customizable avatars, in-game purchases and social elements that encourage prolonged engagement. Although promoted as a creative and educational outlet, critics indicate that Roblox causes video game addictions, since the platform employs gambling-like mechanics, behavioral tracking and psychological design strategies to keep young users playing, and spending, for longer periods. As a result, families are now filing Roblox addiction lawsuits, alleging the company deliberately targeted minors with manipulative features that have led to emotional distress, behavioral problems and financial harm. These claims mirror a broader wave of video game addiction lawsuits being brought against major developers and publishers, including Microsoft, Epic Games, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft and Nintendo. Plaintiffs allege that these companies knowingly design their products to be addictive, especially for children. Beyond addiction concerns, many of the lawsuits also accuse gaming companies of unlawfully monitoring children’s online activity and using behavioral algorithms to drive continued gameplay. These tactics are often paired with microtransactions, offering “cosmetic” upgrades or in-game perks for small, repeated payments, that can quietly add up to substantial costs for families. Learn More SEE IF YOU QUALIFY FOR COMPENSATION In a notice of court order (PDF) filed on July 17, California Superior Court Judge Lawrence P. Riff approved the coordination of 18 additional lawsuits involving Roblox and other major gaming companies under Judicial Council Coordination Proceeding No. 5363 (JCCP 5363), which consolidates video game addiction claims from across the state. The cases, filed in courts across California, including Los Angeles, Alameda, Riverside and Fresno counties, allege that Roblox Corporation and other defendants, such as Epic Games, Microsoft, Mojang, Apple, Google, Nintendo and Sony, developed and marketed games designed to be psychologically addictive, particularly to minors. These lawsuits are now part of the broader video game addiction Judicial Counsel Coordinated Proceeding (JCCP) in California, which centralizes pretrial proceedings to avoid duplication, streamline discovery, and ensure consistent rulings across similar claims. As part of the coordination process, Judge Riff has scheduled a case management conference for August 16, 2025. Attorneys for all parties are required to meet beforehand and submit a joint report by August 22, outlining next steps for the litigation. Roblox Video Game Addiction Lawsuits Several of the earliest Roblox-related lawsuits added to the California JCCP involve parents who claim their children became addicted to the platform due to its manipulative design. In one complaint (PDF) filed by Tiffany Conant and Jeffrey Weener, they allege their child, S.C., developed a gaming addiction after being exposed to loot boxes, randomized rewards and other psychologically manipulative features that encouraged excessive spending and screen time. A separate complaint (PDF) filed by Danielle Freeman claims her child, A.A., began using Roblox at an early age and became emotionally withdrawn, struggled in school, and spent large amounts of money on in-game purchases. In another complaint brought by Evette Gibson, she alleges that Roblox and other game makers intentionally targeted minors by using child psychology and behavioral data to make their platforms more addictive and harder for children to stop playing. Each lawsuit raises similar claims of product liability, failure to warn, negligence, misrepresentation, and violations of California law. Plaintiffs are seeking damages for emotional distress, medical costs and financial losses tied to their children’s gaming behavior. Sign up for more legal news that could affect you or your family.
