Roblox Predator Lawsuit Claims Adult Lured Minor Into Sending Explicit Pics on Instagram

Roblox Exploitation Lawsuit Claims 12-Year-Old Child Was Abused Through Platform

A California woman has filed a Roblox exploitation lawsuit alleging she was sexually abused as a child after a predator used the popular gaming platform to contact and groom her before moving their communications to other social media apps.

The complaint (PDF) was brought by a woman identified only as Jane Doe A.S. in California state court on July 14, naming Roblox Corporation and Meta Platforms Inc. as the defendants.

Jane Doe A.S., now a young adult, indicates she began using Roblox when she was 12 years old, believing the platform was a safe environment where she could play games and interact with other children.

However, the lawsuit claims Roblox failed to implement adequate age verification, parental controls and other safeguards to protect young users from sexual predators who use the platform to identify and groom children.

Roblox Child Exploitation Risks

Roblox is one of the world’s largest online gaming platforms, with tens of millions of users accessing virtual games and experiences each day. A significant portion of those users are children.

The company has repeatedly promoted Roblox as a safe and appropriate environment for young users, emphasizing its content moderation systems, parental controls and other safety measures designed to protect children.

However, a number of recent Roblox sexual exploitation lawsuits allege those representations conceal serious problems involving explicit content and predators who use the platform to identify vulnerable children.

In many claims, Roblox allegedly provides predators with access to millions of young users, allowing them to misrepresent their ages, establish relationships with children and eventually convince them to move conversations to other platforms where there may be fewer restrictions.

In many cases, the sexual exploitation escalates to include video and picture exchanges, and in some cases face-to-face meetings ending in sexual assault, rape, kidnapping or human trafficking.

Roblox eventually began implementing facial recognition technology late last year that the company says can estimate usersโ€™ ages and restrict communications between adults and children without parental approval. However, families pursuing lawsuits maintain the safety measures were introduced too late to protect children who had already suffered abuse through the platform.

Roblox Abuse Allegations

According to the complaint, the plaintiff, now 19, started using Roblox at age 12. She was eventually contacted through Roblox by an adult predator who falsely presented himself as a child. The predator allegedly gained her trust through interactions on the platform before convincing her to communicate through Instagram.

On Instagram, the communications allegedly escalated into sextortion. The complaint claims the predator sent the girl sexually explicit images through the platform and pressured her to respond in kind, threatening to contact her mother and reveal their conversations if she refused. Fearing the consequences, the plaintiff alleges she complied with the predator’s demands.

The lawsuit argues this process follows a predictable pattern that Roblox has known about for years, with predators posing as children, befriending young users and gradually manipulating them into sharing personal information or engaging in sexually explicit communications.

Jane Doe A.S. alleges Roblox could have reduced those risks by implementing stronger age verification requirements, more effective parental controls and safeguards designed to prevent adults from contacting children or moving conversations off the platform.

Instead, the complaint claims Roblox prioritized user growth and engagement while continuing to market the platform to parents and children as a safe place to play and socialize.

The lawsuit similarly alleges Instagram has become a platform where predators can target children, claiming Meta prioritizes expanding and monetizing its user base over implementing safeguards that could have reduced the risk of sexual exploitation.

โ€œPlaintiff suffered this sexual exploitation and abuse as the direct result of
Defendantsโ€™ conduct. For years, Defendant has misrepresented and deliberately concealed information about the pervasive predatory conduct that their apps enable and facilitate. Had Defendants disclosed the truth of what was really occurring on their apps, Plaintiffโ€™s mother would never have permitted Plaintiff to use these apps without her strict supervision.

The case raises allegations of fraudulent concealment and misrepresentation, negligent misrepresentation, negligence, unreasonable design, negligent undertaking, design defect and failure to warn. The plaintiff seeks damages for past, present and future general, economic and special damages, medical expenses and punitive damages.

Roblox Sexual Exploitation Lawsuits

The complaint is expected to join at least 170 other Roblox child exploitation lawsuits consolidated in the Northern District of California, where U.S. District Judge Richard Seeborg is overseeing coordinated discovery and other pretrial proceedings.

As the litigation moves forward, Judge Seeborg is expected to establish a bellwether process, allowing the parties to identify a group of representative claims for early trial dates. The outcomes of those test cases may provide insight into how juries will respond to evidence and testimony likely to be repeated throughout the litigation.

Earlier this year, the court also appointed a special master to facilitate preliminary settlement negotiations. If those discussions result in a global resolution, large numbers of claims could be resolved without the need for individual trials, reducing the time and expense associated with continued litigation.

However, if the bellwether process and settlement negotiations fail to resolve the litigation, Judge Seeborg may eventually begin returning individual lawsuits to the federal courts where they were originally filed for separate trial dates.
