RYOBI Electric Pressure Washer Recall Follows Dozens of Explosions, Injuries

RYOBI Electric Pressure Washer Recall Follows Dozens of Explosions, Injuries

The manufacturer of RYOBI electric pressure washers is warning consumers to immediately stop using certain devices, following more than 100 reports of them overheating, potentially leading to an explosion.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the RYOBI pressure washer recall on August 28, indicating that there have been multiple reports of injuries related to the products.

Electric pressure washers are alternatives to gas-powered pressure washers. They use electric power to create high-powered water streams for cleaning various surfaces.

However, officials are warning that the affected RYOBI pressure washers’ capacitor can overheat and burst, which could cause parts to be forcibly ejected, potentially leading to severe injuries for the user or bystanders.

TTI Outdoor Power Equipment, the RYOBI electric pressure washer manufacturer, has received 135 reports of pressure washers overheating, including 41 explosions, which have resulted in 32 injuries such as fractures to fingers, hands, faces and eyes.

The recall covers about 763,000 RYOBI brushless electric pressure washers with model numbers RY142300 and RY142711VNM. The recalled units feature a spray nozzle, a detergent tank with a blue cap, and built-in storage for accessories.

Each of the products are green with “RYOBI” printed on the front and have model and serial numbers located on the side of the motor housing. A list of affected serial numbers is provided in the recall notice.

The pressure washers were sold nationwide at Home Depot and Direct Tools Factory Outlet stores, as well as online, from July 2017 through June 2024 for $300 to $400.
