Segway Ninebot S2 Lawsuit Alleges Scooter Suddenly Stopped, Causing Severe Knee Injuries

Product liability lawsuits have linked alleged Segway malfunctions to numerous reports of serious injuries and deaths.

A Florida woman has filed a product liability lawsuit alleging she suffered severe and debilitating injuries when a Segway scooter she was riding suddenly malfunctioned and threw her from the device.

The complaint (PDF) was brought by Arianna Collazo in Florida Circuit Court for Miami-Dade County on August 7, naming Amazon.com Services LLC and Segway Inc. as defendants. The case was removed to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida on September 16.

Collazo alleges the Segway scooter was defectively designed and that both Segway and Amazon knew or should have known about the defects, but failed to adequately warn consumers about the risks.

Segway Scooter Injuries

Segway scooters are battery-powered personal transportation devices that allow riders to stand on a platform positioned between two large wheels. They use lithium-ion batteries and gyroscopic technology to maintain balance, steer and move, and are often used for sightseeing tours, security patrols and personal transportation.

However, electric scooters like the Segway and other personal motorized devices have been associated with multiple reports of serious injuries and deaths in recent years, which have resulted in a number of product liability lawsuits.

In one case filed in April, a man suffered a life-threatening brain injury after being thrown from a Segway scooter. The filing indicated the wheel unexpectedly locked while the man was riding the scooter, causing him to be thrown to the ground, where he suffered traumatic injuries.

Segway Ninebot Injury Allegations

According to her complaint, Collazo purchased a Segway Ninebot S2 self-balancing scooter on June 10, 2024. On November 21, 2024, she was riding the scooter when it suddenly and without warning malfunctioned and stopped, violently throwing her off of it.

Collazo was severely injured, suffering a fracture to her tibial plateau and a torn meniscus. She required medical treatment, including surgery to treat her injuries, which resulted in disability, loss of capacity for the enjoyment of life and medical and nursing care expenses.

The lawsuit alleges the Segway was defectively designed and both Amazon and Segway knew or should have known of product defects that made the device unreasonably dangerous for consumers.

Additionally, both companies allegedly failed to warn consumers of the problem and failed to give adequate instructions for riding the scooter to prevent injuries. The complaint claims the companies also did not properly design, manufacture and test the Segway, or sell a safer alternative, even though other designs were available.

The lawsuit raises allegations of negligence, breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranty of merchantability, breach of implied warranty of fitness for a particular purpose, negligent failure to warn, failure to warn, design defect, manufacturing defect and negligence. It seeks damages for pain and suffering, disability, mental anguish, embarrassment and humiliation, loss of capacity for the enjoyment of life, as well as past and future medical care.
