Shark Vacuum Recall Issued Over Due to Shock Hazard

More than 142,000 upright vacuum cleaners have been recalled after the manufacturer received reports of an electrically charged aluminum part detaching from the handle, exposing the metal and posing a potential shock hazard to users.

The Shark vacuum cleaner recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on April 22, following at least 62 consumer complaints of problems with the aluminum wand disconnecting from the handle while remaining energized with electricity. To date, no injuries have been reported, but this may cause users to suffer shocks.

The recall includes four separate models of the Euro-Pro Shark brand Rotator Power Lift-Away series upright vacuum cleaners with model numbers NV650W, NV651, NV652, and NV660 and date codes beginning with the number 48 or lower and ending with 14. Customers can find the model numbers printed on a silver sticker on the upper right hand corner of the black unit. Dates codes are printed in a week-year (WWYY) format on a metal prong of the power cord.

The vacuum cleaners measure about 45 inches tall by 12 inches wide and were sold in either a maroon or purple color and contain a clear plastic middle section. Specifically, models NV650W and NV652 were sold in maroon, and NV651 and NV660 were sold in purple. Vacuum cleaners marked with a dimple or green circle sticker on the outside of the plastic cuff that holds the aluminum wand have already been inspected by the manufacturer and are not included in the recall.

According to the CPSC, roughly 142,000 units were sold in the United States and another 650 were distributed for sale to Canada.

The vacuum cleaners were manufactured in China under Euro-Pro Operating LLC, of Newton, Massachusetts where they were sold at Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Kohl’s, Lowes, Target, and other large scale retailers nationwide and online at www.sharkclean.com as well as through television infomercials from August 2014 through March 2015 for between $250 and $350.

The CPSC recommends that customers with recalled vacuum cleaners stop using them immediately and contact Euro-Pro at 877-593-5140 or visit them online at www.sharkrecall.com for information on how to receive a free replacement wand.
