Sherwin-Williams Recalls Aerosol Can Products Due to Fire Hazard

Sherwin-Williams is recalling several products sold in aerosol canisters due to a risk that they may leak and pose a possible fire hazard.

The Sherwin-Williams aerosol can recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on August 28, impacting canisters of Krylon Crystal Clear Glaze and Acrylic Paint, Tree House Studio Clear Acrylic Matte Coating, and Dupli-Color Perfect Match Automotive Paint. Nearly 120,000 aerosol canisters in all have been affected by the recall.

The action comes after the Sherwin-Williams received at least 31 reports of leaking canisters. In some cases leaking paint caused property damage, but there have been no injuries were reported.

The CPSC has determined that the canisters pose a fire hazard to consumers if they are stored near something that could be an ignition source.

The recall affects the following Sherwin-Williams products:

  • About 98,000 12-ounce cans of Krylon Triple Thick Crystal Clear Glaze and 11-ounce Krylon indoor/Outdoor Crstal Clear satin acrylic finish. Batch codes HL1311FV, HL2081KL or HL2081MN and UPC code 075577005000 or 724504035305.
  • About 17,850 11-ounce cans of Tree House Studio Clear Acrylic Matte Coating. Batch code HL2081LT and UPC code 724504103004.
  • About 2,700 8-ounce cans of Dupli-Color Perfect Match automotive paint in green metallic. Batch code HLN2031LN and UPC code 026916715036.

All of the batch codes can be found on the bottom of affected cans. The cans were sold retailers, hardware stores, hobby shops and automotive supply stores nationwide from July 2007 through June 2012 for about $7 per can.

The CPSC recommends that consumers stop using products affected by this recall immediately and contact Sherwin-Williams for a refund by calling (888) 304-3769. Consumers can also contact the company’s website at www.sherwin-williams.com.
