UVEX Bicycle Helmet Recall Issued Due to Head Injury Risk

Almost 47,000 UVEX bicycle helmets have been recalled due to a risk that the chinstrap may fail, potentially allowing the helmet to slide off a riders head and increase the risk of a serious head trauma in an accident or fall

The UVEX helmet recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on December 12, after the agency determined the German imported helmets do not comply with impact requirements suitable for bicycle helmets sold in the U.S.

Although no injuries or incidents have been reported, the CPSC concluded that consumers face an increased risk of injury due to an unsafe chinstrap anchor design that could allow the helmet to slide off during use.

The UVEX Sports bicycle helmet recall includes seven different models sold in a variety of colors with different colored chin straps. Model numbers included in the recall are XB017, XB022, XB025, XB027, XB032, XB036, and XB038. The model numbers can be located under the fitting pad on the top right side of the helmet.

The recalled bicycle helmets were manufactured in Germany under UVEX Sports GmbH & Co. where they were sold at sporting goods and bicycle specialty stores nationwide from September 2009 through June 2014 for between $100 and $260.

The CPSC recommends that customers with recalled helmets stop using them immediately and contact UVEX Sports Inc. at 844-767-0656 or visit them online at www.uvex-sports.us and navigate to the “Recall” tab for information on how to receive a free replacement helmet or a refund of the purchase price.
