Winn-Dixie Apple Juice Recall Issued Due to Mold By-Product

A recall has been issued for Winn-Dixie Apple Juice, due to possible contamination with a mold by-product that may cause adverse health consequences for consumers.

The Winn-Dixie Apple Juice recall was announced by the FDA on April 12, after it was discovered that the juice may contain patulin, which is a mold by-product that commonly grows in fruit and vegetables.

Although no illnesses or cases of food poisoning have been reported, the contamination may cause consumers to experience adverse health consequences, according to Winn-Dixie.

The recall includes 64 Fluid Ounce Winn-Dixie Organic 100% Apple Juice with UPC code “2114021626”. The recalled juice was sold in all Winn-Dixie stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, with expiration dates located on the containers between January 15, 2014 and March 25, 2014.

The mold by-product patulin is monitored by the FDA in products and is measured in parts per billion. Patulin is not allowed in products at levels exceeding 50 parts per billion.

Winn-Dixie is encouraging consumers to immediately stop consuming the recalled apple juice and either discard the remaining product or return it back to the store of purchase with the store logo or receipt to verify the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumer with questions may also contact Winn-Dixie at (866) 946-6349.

This is the third Winn-Dixie recall over the last year. In June 2012, Winn-Dixie announced a Leasa alfalfa sprout recall after samples tested positive for salmonella contamination. In July 2012 metal fragments were found in packages of Winn-Dixie Cheeseburger Macaroni Skillet Dinners. No injuries or illnesses were reported in connection to the macaroni dinner recall.
