Peanut Butter Salmonella Recall Expanded to Include Crackers, Cookies January 19, 2009 AboutLawsuits Add Your Comments An initial peanut butter recall issued last week for large tubs of peanut butter potentially contaminated with Salmonella, was expanded over the weekend to include peanut paste made at the same manufacturing plant. This paste may have been used by a number of different manufacturers in products like peanut butter crackers, cookies, cakes and ice cream. Health officials indicate that a recent salmonella food poisoning outbreak, which has surfaced over the past four months, appears to be linked to peanut butter manufactured at a Georgia processing plant owned by Peanut Corporation of America. Product samples have tested positive for Salmonella typhimurium, which is the same strain of bacteria that has been identified in over 400 people who have been sickened in at least 43 states. See if you qualify for a sports betting addiction lawsuit. Learn More SEE IF YOU QUALIFY FOR COMPENSATION According to a peanut butter recall notice issued by Peanut Corporation of America on January 13, 2009, 21 lots of large 5 pound to 50 pound containers of peanut butter sold through distributors to schools, hospitals, nursing homes and other food service providers were recalled due to potential salmonella contamination. At that time, the manufacturer indicated that none of the peanut butter recalled was being sold directly to consumers through retail stores. On January 18, 2009, the Peanut Corporation of America recall was expanded to include peanut paste manufactured at the same Georgia processing plant. The peanut paste, which is a concentrated product containing ground, roasted peanuts, was sold to manufacturers of a variety of different products that contain peanut butter. On Sunday and Monday, a number of different manufacturers who sold products containing peanut butter which may have come from paste produced by Peanut Corporation of America issued recalls of their own. Some of the recalls include variations of: Austin Peanut Butter Crackers Keebler Peanut Butter Crackers Famous Amos Peanut butter Cookies Keebler Peanut Butter Cookies Perry’s Peanut Butter Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt Shurfine Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream Wegmans Peanut Butter Ice Cream Little Debbie Peanut Butter Crackers South Bend Chocolate and Fudge with Peanut Butter Food Lion Peanut Butter Cookies Lofthouse Peanut Butter Cookies Chuck’s Chunky Peanut Butter Cookies Pastries Plus Gourmet Cookies Wal-Mart Peanut Butter Cookies Given the growing number of products being recalled and the difficulty identifying which products may contain contaminated peanut butter with salmonella, the FDA is urging consumers to avoid eating any commercially-prepared products with peanut butter or peanut butter served at hospitals, nursing homes, schools or other institutional food service locations. Peanut butter salmonella food poisoning could result in nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever or abdominal cramps, with symptoms often appearing within 12 to 72 hours and lasting from 4 to 7 days. While most healthy adults recover without substantial long-term complications, young children, older individuals and those with a weak immune system could be at a greater risk of serious infection, which may result in hospitalization or even death if not treated promptly. Consumers who believe that they may have peanut butter products that were recalled can contact the manufacturer for additional information. Food poisoning attorneys who are investigating and reviewing potential peanut butter salmonella lawsuits have recommended that any individuals who have been sickened by a peanut butter product preserve and store any uneaten portions for future testing. The products should be stored in a manner to prevent further consumption. October 14, 2017 OCT.14.2017 I BOUGHT NUTTER BUTTER BY NABISCO. SO FAR BEFORE I HAD NEVER HAD A COMPLAINT ABOUT A NABISCO PRODUCT UNTIL I PURCHASED AND CONSUMED A FEW NUTTER BUTTER COOKIES BY PRODUCT. BUT I WAS LOOKING FOR COOKIES THAT HAD A BIT OF CRUNCH TO IT, AND CAME ACROSS NUTTER BUTTER. AT FIRST I HAD A PLEASANT SENSATION FROM THEM, BUT NOT KNOWINGLY THAT SUCH COOKIES WOULD BE MAKING ME SICK, AND FOUR DAYS I FELT REALLY SICK, WITH CRAMPS, MY MIND SEEMED TO START WORKING, GOING OR FEELING USELESS, NOT ABLE TO SLEEP RIGHT.THE CAUSE.? THE PEANUT BUTTER. I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST THE PEANUT BUTTER, AND REMOVED THE PEANUT BUTTER FROM THE BUTTER COOKIE, BUT AFTER EATING IT JUST GAVE ME THE NO-NO TO EATING IT (YOU FEEL SORT OF A CONVULSION), IT TOO FELT AND TASTED SICKENING. I KNOW THAT PEANUTS ARE NOT A PROBLEM FOR ME. IT IS THE PEANUTS IN NUTTER BUTTER MUST BE GMO. I AM NOT ALLERGIC TO PEANUTS. CONSUMING GMO PEANUTS IS WHAT MAKES PEOPLE THINK THAT THEY ARE ALLERGIC. I HAD BEEN EATING PLENTY OF PEANUTS BEFORE BUYING -THE NUTTER BUTTER. WHEN I STARTED EATING THE NUTTER BUTTER I HAD STOPPED EATING PEANUTS, AND IT SEEMED THAT EATING THEM WOULD BE EATING COOKIES AND PEANUTS. FOR THE NUMBER OF COOKIES I ATE AND HOW VERY, VERY SICK I BECAME IS NOT COMPREHENSIBLE. WHAT A BIG MISTAKE I MADE BUYING THOSE NUTTER BUTTER COOKIES. NEVER WOULD I REALLY UNDERSTAND THE EFFECT OF EATING THOSE COOKIES WOULD BE FOR ANYONE AFTER EATING A FEW OF THEM, AND I MEAN EATING LIKE ONE TO TWO “A DAY”. UNLESS IT HAPPENED TO ME THE FEELING OF BEING SICK, REALLY VERY, VERY SICK IS THAT YOU FEEL DOOMED, AND DO NOT KNOW WHEN YOU WILL GET WELL. PEANUTS ARE GOOD AND HAVE MANY HEALTH BENEFITS OF COURSE ALL PEANUTS DO HAVE TO BE PROCESSED PROPERLY. THE NUTTER BUTTER MAKES ME THINK IT HAS DEATH IN IT. I AM GLAD THAT THAT BRIEF AWFUL EXPERIENCE IS OVER, OVER, OVER.!!!!! BUT HOW FAST, AND HORRIBLY ILL I BECAME IN SUCH A SHORT TIME FROM VERY LITTLE YET SO POTENT. I ADHERE TO A VERY CONSTANT AND EVEN HABIT OF WHAT I EAT OR WHAT I DRINK. THE ONLY THING CHANGED, THE PEANUTS FOR NUTTER BUTTER. HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL AND DO GET SICK BUT WILL HAVE NO IDEA WHAT MADE THEM SICK. OR IF THEY END AT THE HOSPITAL WILL BE TOLD THAT THEY ARE ALLERGIC TO PEANUTS.? WHEN THE REAL PROBLEM MAY JUST BE RAW, NOT WELL PROCESSED PEANUTS, OR GMO PEANUTS. Jesse June 2, 2014 Ever since before I thought peanut butter was good. But then when I read this article, I will never eat peanut butter again!!!!!! Karen March 6, 2014 I had a beautifully mountain hike up a mountain feeling absolutely fantastic. After 2 hrs I are a nature vally sweet and salty peanut bar I went on up and suddenly started a gurgley feeling. After 2 more hours my head stomach and body hurt. When I got home I started vomiting and had diarrhea so severely I thought I was really going to die. My husband wanted to take me to er. I was too weak to move. He also ate bars that week. Twice he thought he was coming down with some thing. I’m positive it was the bar. Please do not eat these!!!!!!!!!! Diane August 1, 2013 Ate Nabisco Nutter Butter Bites 2 days ago and for the following 2 days had GI cramping, diarrhea, chills and dizziness. I do believe it was the peanut butter paste in the cookie bites. Betsy March 13, 2012 3/12/12 I found a worm crawling on a Austin PB Cracker, that I was just about to put in my mouth! Also was one crawling on the 1 cracker, remaining in the package. I had already eaten 4 of these crackers!! There were 4 packages left in the cupboard, that I also opened. In 2 of them, I found 2 shriveled up, dead worms. DISGUSTING!! I called the 800 number, on the back of the package to report it. They will contact all of the local stores & have them removed off of the shelves. janie March 10, 2011 Not meaning offense, but those of you who are sick after eating products not made in the affected peanut processing plant — people do get intestinal upsets caused by viruses or other things. And a large number of people get sick (or well, in the case of placebos) from the power of suggestion. That is not an insult, it is just a tendency present in all humans. Which isn’t to say it couldn’t also be that your peanuts were contaminated but just because you got sick after eating something doesn’t mean that’s what made you sick. amy January 6, 2011 I just made chocolate peanut butter bars using natural jif, and after eating, also experienced similar symptoms that Bridget and her children experienced.. chills, cramps, gas, and diarrhea. Anyone else have a similar experience with natural jif? joe November 18, 2010 Seems if you are getting sick, you would stop using the product and return it to the store, common sense should take over! I don’t know why God allowed you to reproduce. Bridget November 16, 2010 I and my children have gotten sick after eating natural Jif, three times now. I have narrowed it down to that. The symptoms are chills, cramping, gas, sulfur burps, diahrea, and vomiting. I haven’t heard of a recall either, but I have one full jar and two partials left. I think if I use it for baking cookies, maybe we won’t get sick. I wish I knew how to get it tested. Shannon September 25, 2010 How do I report worms found in Austin PB crackers. The store didn’t wasn’t sure when I took them back and showed them. Micheal June 26, 2010 I want to know how I can report nausea, from eating Roasted Honey Nut Skippy Creamy Peanut Butte, Net WT 16.3 oz. Best if used by Dec 0210lk01 18:22. I like to get it tested. Dawn June 3, 2010 Is there a new recall or issue with peanut butter? I now have nausea, stomach pain, cramping, chills for the third time in 2 weeks, and I just ate the PB this morning. Christine May 5, 2010 Sadly enough, I didn’t even know of the peanut butter recall. I eat peanut butter all the time but just recently purchased a jar of all Natural Jif (manufactured by Schmucker company). The first 2 times, I ate it in a protein shake and got sick to my stomach after. I just assumed I wasn’t use to have the protein (it had been a while). The 3rd time today, I ate the peanut butter without the shake and got sick again. Even worse – stomach pain, chills, etc. This is what prompted me to check online. I don’t care if Jif is not on the recall list yet, it soon will be I am guessing. Bob May 18, 2009 Why do people keep eating the bars if they know there’s possible salmonella poisoning? Carolyn March 31, 2009 I have gotten Nature Valley Crunchy Honey & Oats. I saw the ingrediants and it had peanut but they were fine like their website says. When is this peanut issue going to be over and solved? Harrison March 23, 2009 I had some Nabisco Nutter butter patties, and got sick, but wasn’t sure if it were related to this recall. I saved them for a month or so to see if they were recalled, but winded up eating them anyway….they tasted too good. Guess what……I got sick again. 🙁 Lisa March 9, 2009 My husband was violently sick last night and I noticed that the Girls Scouts cookies “Peanut Butter Patties” have been opened and some eaten. Folks, this is overseas!!! Is there a recall for other countries? What is the treatment? Is ti hospital only or can he take something or just “ride it out”? Brad February 21, 2009 My wife ate a Nature Valley Crunchy Peanut Butter Bar on Thursday morning at 7:30a.m. By 7:00p.m. last night, she was violently ill(diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and severe cramping). It’s now 24-hours later and she has not improved. I just checked her in to the ER. They want to test her stool, but after 24 straight hours of diarrhea, she can’t produce a sample anymore, even though the nausea, vomiting & cramping are still there. I don’t care if these bars are not on the recall list…Don’t eat them. P Catron February 20, 2009 I bought two jars of peanut butter (sold together) of JIF peanut butter a bbefore Christmas. He had severe abdominal pain, very weak and heavy sweating. We thought this was a heart attack. He is still having some of these symptoms.
