OVERVIEW OF DENTURE CREAM PROBLEMS: Over 35 million Americans, mainly consisting of the elderly, use denture creams or adhesives to keep their dentures in place. High levels of zinc that are contained in these products may be absorbed into the body through the mouth and gums, potentially causing:

  • Zinc Poisoning
  • Neuropathy
  • Myelopathy
  • Anemia

  • Other Neurological Injury

ZINC POISONING LAWSUITS: While the body requires small amounts of zinc, serious and debilitating health problems may occur when high levels are ingested. Increased levels of zinc may also cause reduced copper levels in the blood, known as hypocupremia, which may lead to neuropathy and affect the nerves.

According to a 2001 report by the National Academy of Sciences, 40 mg/day is the highest amount of zinc that can be safely tolerated, but the recommended daily allowance is only 11 mg/day for men and 8 mg/day for women.

Researchers have found that denture adhesive creams like Super Poligrip and Fixodent contain zinc concentrations between 17,000 and 34,000 micrograms per gram. It has been estimated that users of these produts may be exposed to about 330 mg of zinc per day, far higher than the recommended amount or what has been determined to be safe.
 
Zinc toxicity may cause symptoms such as

i’ve use poly grip for 20 years about 10 years ago. I read about the zinc in poly grip so I start using the zinc, free Poligrip. In recent years, I have experience pins an needles in my lower extremities. I’ve had pain in my arms and headaches and memory loss and dizziness. I’ve had CT scans on my brain and MRI scans also Hearing test.

I have been using these denture powders since I was 21 at the age of40 I started having stomach problems, gastritis and weight loss, nausea and others, I am now 72 and still dealing with these stomach symptoms, as of today reading these articles I just learned that all these powders have zinc and it can be toxic, 30 years I have been sleeping with my dentures in and powder was always on them. Does anyone know a safe powder I can use?

I have been during fixabent and polygrip for 40 years now I am 57years old.I am shocked by what I have read I have had problems for a long long time now with joints tingling unhandled and burning feet .I have been very bad over the last fifteen years did voluntary work because I had to give up my normal work because of the pain I was in and walking was hard .I had to move house where I had no stairs it is so bad now.I use aids in my bed and walking stick I struggle walking my legs have pains shooting down them.I have went to doctor today to get a blood test to check zinc level told my doctor what I had found out about the denture cream.Will find out next week .Can anyone tell me if this have to do with all my pain that I have had for years.c

SCARED VERY SCARED news for me,two days ago I went to the hospital as emergency couse Itough that i will have strock,nubness in left arm fromshoulder to my fingers and my left side of my face,So I was afraid to die,..now I will toss it last tube of”free zinc”POLIGRIP..OMG!

i’ve been using both fixadent.and poligrip for i’m sure 11 years.i’ve been going to the doctor where i live at now for about 7 years and it seems as though every time i go i have some thing else wrong.i deal with high blood pressure ,anxiety,stress,panic attacks,tingling of hands an feet with numbness an pain.i use gabapentin 500 mg.2 tablets 3 times a day. zoloft 200 mg a day.atenolol 50 mg. 1 a day. hydrocodone 5-500. 2 times a day.i also get shoots in my back,my butt,and my neck. Now i went to the doctor the other day an i was told i’m having renal beginings ( kindneys )…now i’ m having to take all kind of medical test. this is really starting to make me think.

I cannot believe what I am reading here. For 10 months out of one year I had to walk with a walker. My legs were so weak I couldn’t trust them to hold me up. Then as the weakness seemed to improve, I started having terrible contractions in my (inside) thighs, feet, ankles, ribs and even hands. I call them contractions because they don’t seem to be in the muscles like charly-horse pain. Sometimes the feet are on fire. . .sometimes sharp, hot pains shooting up and down my feet and legs. One thing I have noticed; it gets worse at night. When I lie down the contractions start. I have to get up and stretch and walk. . . .but sometimes they are so severe I holler and cry-out. Everyone in the house is awakened. I thought maybe they are more severe when I am tired. Well, you probably guessed. I had my upper teeth pulled and got the upper denture and started using Poligrip because the plate was loose and dropping down without adhesive. I have to look it up to make sure, but this was 7 – 8 years ago. I heard this ZINC story on Diane Sawyer one night on World News.

I have had my dentures since December 2011 and the fit is still great. I reemebmr that with the original ones I would have to use extra adhesive after 3 or 4 hours after putting them in or during a meal. They hold all day. I don’t have to do this any more. I have much more confidence with these dentures made by Cape Dental Care. The look and fit is great.

OMG! i can’t believe what i have been reading! seriously! my brother told me a couple monthes ago about a commercial he watched about lawsuits for denture cream. i was so shocked! i KNOW that all my recent health problems stem from years of using these products. i am 100% positive. i have been dignosed with several types of arthritis and severe degenerative bone disease. i have horrible pain and cramoing throughout my entire body, legs, arms, neck,feet ankles & elbows. all my joints hurt terribly! i am on narcotic pain meds for the rest of my life. my entire life has changed! i have become depressed and anxious. i used to be so active and loved to walk and ride my bike. now i can hardly move. everything hurts so bad! i am sick of living this way and i feel like the FDA ruined my life!

I could not believe what I was reading abt fix dent. My husband and I have been using this product for at least 25years. I have headaches,blurry vision ,thrush in my mouth at least 3times a year. Also painful ,itchy bumps on my arm. Pain so bad in my left thigh I have to sit. My husband , has watery eye constant muscle aches and sleeps all the time. This is so scary. Buying zinc free product and hope and pray it makes a difference

Just started wearing upper partials in Oct of 2011, all I taste and feel in my body is this adhesive, whick I use Super Polygrip. I have lost a tremendous amount of weight because the adhesive takes my appetite away each time that I use it. I can actually feel a sensation in my stomach when I use this adhesive. Just want to gain my weight back, but this Poly Grip keeps conquering my desire to eat.

Hello, I had bone disease from smoking & hereditary problems that the dentist said & he had to remove my top teeth with no cavities which was devastating to me…like a funeral…well the denture was so big that I used polygrip to keep them in & I had problems of it melting while I was asleep & gagging me plus my elbows near my upper arms are in bad constant pain…it wakes me up through the night it hurts so bad…my knees, back…I feel that this has contributed to my health…such a drag! I don’t have insurance so I suffer…I guess that’s life!!!

Try the super grip poly(-Powder).Sprinkle it evenly into your plate ,then blow the excess,put denture plate into your mouth.This has worked for me,and I am on my 2nd set.Plus I am 80 yrs. old.

I have been using super poligrip or Fixodent for 7 yrs. About 3 years ago, after having a 2nd set of dentures made, my tongue started to get sore and my taste buds changed. I had been to a dr. and had neuropathy in the feet from back surgery, but now my mouth gets the numb feeling, my tongue is so sore and numb that I cannot say some words right. I get dizzy, my muscles are chronically sore and getting weaker. My hands are numb and I drop things that I pick up. I have had to use more adhesive, but I try to spread it like the dentist said to. I’ve been using the adhesives for 7 years and am getting more miserable constantly. I recently saw a neurologist and his diagnosis was nerve disease of unknown causes. Also, clinical and electrophysiologic evidence of peripheral neuropathy and the same evidence of a mixed sensorimetor polyneuropathy. I see that the zinc has been taken out of the adhesives, but after I remove them, my mouth is very numb for hours. My dr. has done all he can. Is there anything else in these creams that can cause these horrible symptoms.The Orthopoedic surgeon could find no reason for any problems after surgery and I tend to agree.

i have used fix-a-dent for 16years, i would think if we go for blood tests that they can see the zinc levels, and also on the fixadent tube it states too much usage it has zinc in it. what are th product people doing aboput it which is proctor and gamble, does anyone no if they taken any action to take zinc out of it and what is good enough to hold teeth in??? i wonder if some of these problems i have are due to these products. why dont doctors ask us patients if we use denture cream anyway, there partly at fault also.

So i been usin this method fpr a few years now. I feel pain n my arms legs my feet fall asleep or pins n needles. I sleep constantly,so ober tired! My jar also has sore stiffness like. My hands fall asleep a great deal also. I had back surgery so natuarlly i blamed unexplained pain on this my doctors done test only to show nothing!! My knees hurt so badly they feel like a vice script bein tigjted n wont let go but doctors dont know y????

I stared to use polygrip back in 1991. I had to because my denist made my dentures to big. Sometimes I would put too much in and it would ooze out at work and i would swallow it.Never though nothing about it. Just heard about the lawsuit on it. I have been diagnosed with Lupus on april 2010. been having pain in hands for 4 years and my hands get verry big with large bumps on wrist. Went to 4 differnt Doc.’s and a hospital trying to find help and found one who said I have a connective tissue disorder in my DNA. I am on disabilty and to this day having a lot of pain.

I have been using Fixodent since I got my first set of dentures in my 30’s. I am now 64. I have terrible leg pain especially first thing in the morning. So far the only explanation is peripheal neuropathy which I take hydrocodone for the pain. If I get out and walk for any length of time, I also have the pain, in my hips legs and feet. I am being sent to Sothwesterm Medical School in Dallas to see if I can get an accurate diagosis. I have received a diagnosis of neuropthy, M.S and disc in my back I am so confuled I just want the pain to go away.

I started using Polygrip 11 years ago.The burning pain in the bottom of myfeet and the harding of my calves started 6 years ago. Today 2011 it’s all worse, can hardly walk anywhere, fingers numb all day .I hope they come up with some kind of cure for those who suffer daily

I have been using both fixodent powder and cream and also Polydent powder and cream I would change off and on since I was 29 years old, and I am now 70 years old. I notice my chin was looking funny and didn’t think much of it just getting older. I found out. I am losing my bone at the bottom my teeth are moving and a lot of my bone is gone. If I have my teeth pulled I will have to have the bone build up before I can have teeth put in. And I live on SS. I started using Polydent with no zink and my teeth will not stay in.

For those of you who have burning pain-look into a diagnosis of RSD-Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. RSD is a common but little known disease with the main characteristic being BURNING pain that is out of proportion to an injury (if an injury took place). However, RSD can be brought on without an injury. Please check rsdsa.org for more information so that you get a proper diagnosis. Whenever I put my dentures in, (I use fixodent powder), I feel ill and tired all day. As soon as I take them out, I feel much better. I’ve had neuropathy for years and chronic pain. I know there’s a connection between my denture adhesive and my physical health. But how do I prove it? My zinc and copper levels tested in the normal range.

OMG! I`ve been using Fixodent since 1999.I use it up to 2 times a day.I have been dizzy,very tired that when I get home from work..I only work 6 hrs a day..I take a nap.My feet burn and hurt everyday!!!I I`ve had pain shoot up and down my legs to the point that I woke up crying in the middle of the night! I`m only 49, I should not be in so much pain…I used to enjoy gardening and walking with my husband and our 4 dogs …now all I want to do is lay down! I had never heard about any of this until it happened to me and I researched my symtoms online the next day. I have only been using the super pologrip extra care, zinc FREE for two weeks. I am only 50, with no health issues. I used it sparingly the first two weeks because it caused my gums to ach and I had to take advil in order to use it. on feb 13, I had to use it three times in a day at an all day event. The next day I could not walk or sit up for six hours! muscle weakness, dizziness, sharp pain in a wierd spot on my upper right thigh, severe low blood pressure then explosive bloody diahhrea and it was over. the next day I was normal. so this was from zinc FREE polygrip and after one day of heavy use. I know my body and I know it was this product. so either it is not the zinc or china put out a bad batch or substituted a cheaper compound or something, which is no surprise. If this had happed to my parents it would have costed thousands in the emergency room. I had no insurance and this was a very scary day for me! neve again! use seabond wafters or get implants to hook on to.

hi, i really need help. i have use fixodent for along time but, i really start using a lot about 2003 by 2004 i started having burning pain with my tongue and throat and the middle of my chest. i also have pain in my legs and my feet pain with burning. this is all the time. i also have anemia and headaches it just got worse as time went by. i had new denture made in about 2008. i still have all the pain. i saw the news about fixodent but,i have not used it in about 2yrs so, when i was tested for the zinc and copper it was already back to normal.the dr. said it most likely would be with time i quit using fixodent. i still have all the damage or symptoms. i have seen alot of doctors. no help just alot of meds. if anyone else has the tongue. throat and chest burning.it maybe because i swallowed so much of it.

I have been using denture cream for at least 10 yrs. I have been having problems for several yrs, but can’t get a positive diagnosis from a doctor. I have raynaud’s & have been tested for lupus, scleroderma, MS, RA, etc. I am in pain every day. I have to force myself to get out of bed. I have alot of facial pain. My doctor thought it may be shingles in my sinuses. Feels like a toothache or sometimes like something trying to drill through the bone in my cheek. Depression from not knowing what’s wrong. On disability now at 55 yrs old. Could it be the denture cream.

Wow..i just read through more of the comments and now i am gonna get my eyes checked again too…they were fine until the yr i turned 40 about 12 yrs after starting to use poligrip and they said i need bifocals. That fast and they have gotten so bad they burn and water and i cant see to read the guide on the flatscreen at the foot of my bed..i didnt even think about my eyes having anything to do with this…..i too was into sports and so active..worked 2 jobs and going to school at the same time..now the last year and half bedridden. I too rougly a year ago started having the sudden dizzy spells where i would almost pass out…

I was watching tv one night and saw a show on a lady that was in a wheel chair due to zinc levels in denture cream, I was shocked! I had signs that I had zinc poisoning so I told my relatives and they laughed they thought I was loosing my mind, I new what I was feeling for years was real. I ask my Doctor when I went for my blood test if she could test me for zinc, she look at me and I explained it to her, I just had to know, so she put zinc on my test and I have 3 months to go back to see her. So I went to the hosiptal and got my results, my family couldn’t believe it was abnormal 139 levels, I was right and can’t wait to see her! I don’t really know what to do next, but I need to use denture cream just to eat but, I don’t want to have the side affects. I can’t believe they where allowed to put it in! Some countries won’t allow that in there country because of it and we did. I’m so upset and want to know now that zinc isn’t in it any more do the side affects go away. I have numbess, tingling , chilles and fever, arthrities the worst is my bones ache! I been using Super Poligrip and fixodent for almost 30 years… Can’t wait to see what my Doctor says or even tells me to do!!!

I seen a commercial on poligrip some Lawyer asking for people to call if you use poligrip. Wow…I was blown away.I’ve been on the poligrip Ultra for years.I now have extreme pain in both my arms and Head pain.I use poligrip I cannt eat without it.I can say that my doctor and nuerology doctor couldnt even find the problem.I am on pain meds now.That helps alittle.Still my doctor has no answers for me. I do know I go to bed in extreme arm p[ain and wake up with it being worse….. So if any one has an answer let me know….

I have both lower and upper dentures and have used the powdered extra strength Fixodent now for 15 yrs. I had severe bone loss and have been using very frequently. I ,too have experienced the same symptomology as noted in the comment section since may of 2005. I am a well controlled diabetic type II and have numbness and tingling in my left leg that bothers me all the time, It is very difficult to maintain my long nursing work hrs. I have reported my symptoms but I feel the endocrinologist brush me off claiming diabetes may cause. I am only 59 yrs old and suffer from lethargy and periodic dizziness. Could this possibly be the effect of Fixodent?

I have used Fixodent for many, many years = WITH NO PROBLEMS !! I mess the POWDERED form of this and an now trying to find a POWDERED brand!!! I prefer the powdered type and will search for it — EVEN IF I MUST GO OUT THE COUNTRY TO LOCATE SOME ! ! I do NOT LIKE the paste style at all!!! So sue me!! 🙂

I used Poligrip in the 80s and 90s. For the past 12 years I have had SEVERE polyneuriopathy and use prescribed slow release morphine to reduce the pain.I havce difficulty walking and use a scooter to get around. I am an Americ and equally a Canadian citizen. Is there a Canadian Class Action? I would like to join ether an U.S.or Canadian class action.

I have been using Super Poligrip since 2007 and have been experiencing jaw and ear pain, dizziness, migraines and body aches. Sometimes the pain is so severe I can’t make it through an 8 hour a day job. I am now looking at joint replacement surgery on my right thumb. I have had MRI’s, sinus x-rays and cat scans, the doctors find nothing wrong.Sometimes these same doctors look at me as if I am either crazy or have a drug problem. Believe me the pain is real, in fact I have recently been diagnosed with a stomach ulcer due to taking nsaids such as BC Powders just to try to ease the pain. Hopefully, some of these symptoms can be reversed.

I am 51 years old, i have had full dentures since 1993. Soon after wearing dentures, applying fixodent different health problems arrose starting with anemia,hormonal balances, thyroid problems and then revoval of my thyroid from goiters. At that time I began having low potassium counts which I felt was the cause of my pain. Wrong… between me tripping over my own feet, stumbling like a drunk seeing a neurologist,nephrologist or getting those needles trying to find the source of my pain. With the rsults was blamed on copper overload. So for the past 18 months Ihave been taken super b complex daily recommended by my nuerologist. The dizzies and fatigue had me thinking that I was going crazy,for short period of time I was on antidepressents. At this time I am in so much pain. Now I know it’s not me, Praise the Lord.

I am 46 years old and I have been using fixodent for about 9 years and for the past 6 to 7 years I have been in alot of pain. I now am seeing a chronic pain management doctor and taking alot of pain meds. My lower back and my neck hurt all the time and I get alot of tingling and numbness in my arms and legs. My arm and legs also are in alot of pain. I don’t sleep much at night and now I have been referred to a surgeon. I wonder if any of this is because of using the fixodent. Now I have a hard time with walking and keeping my balance and I use to use a cane part time but now I have been using it all the time. I feel like I am 90 years old. This stinks. I can’t even do anything with my family cause of the pain.

As Rose in the above comment, I have beeen using super poli grip also since I was 26 and I have all the same symptoms . Numb and tingling on my right side, face and hand, sometimes tingling both hands, and right shoulder is painful. I laso have dizziness, and I too, can sleep twelve hours and still be tired. I eat well, my doctor has recently started me on vitamin D to see if helps. What is odd is my lifetime low blood pressure has recently started to go high without cause. I switched to a zinc free denture cream now, but does that help? Is the damage done?

I’ve been using super poli grip daily since I was 25 years old…I’ve not had any medical insurance for the past several years and have had nothing but problems…numb and tingling on my right side of my body, face and hand. Currently have a frozen shoulder that no one can explain why, frequent head aches, and again numbness of face and neck area. I am 53 years old and can sleep 12 hours and still be tired.. I was recently told by a dr at a free clinic that my “low blood pressure had now turned into “high blood pressure” I have been trying to figure out what could be doing this to my body with limited funds to cover medical testing. Any ideas? It seems like this fits the profile exactly to me.

Ive been using polygrip for 10 yrs now, in the past 2 yrs the front of my legs have been going numb and my feet constantly hurt, i’m 49 yrs old, i have trouble staying awake too, my weight gain is 20 lbs in 10 yrs sence using this product but i dont eat much, I asked my doctor about this and got the same old b.s. “i’m too young” was his opinion! i just saw an advertisement on TV tonight about polygrip and a lawsuit ,so i checked out this site and i was amazed, your not alone!!!!!!!! me 2!

omg! It’s like you all know me…and are all talking about me!! I have been dealing with all this pain all this time and no one knows why! I really hope that the effects are reversible or at least treatable!
