Fisher-Price Rock ‘N Play Infant Sleeper Recall Issued Due to Mold January 8, 2013 Russell Maas Add Your Comments Following more than a dozen cases where babies suffered respiratory problems after using a Fisher-Price Rock ‘N Play sleeper, and hundreds of reports involving mold growth, consumers are being asked to immediately inspect about 800,000 of the infant recliners. A Fisher-Price Newborn Rock ‘n Play Sleeper recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on January 8, after the manufacturer, Fisher-Price, received at least 600 reports of mold growing on the sleepers after purchase, including at least 16 infants treated for respiratory issues, coughs and hives after sleeping on the recliners. According to the CPSC, mold can develop between the removable seat cushion and the hard plastic frame of the sleeper when it remains wet or moist, or if the recliner is not cleaned frequently. This poses a potential risk of infections and respiratory illnesses for infants. Learn More SEE IF YOU QUALIFY FOR COMPENSATION The recall to inspect for mold growth includes all Fisher-Price Rock N’ Play infant recliner seats, known as “sleepers,” designed for babies up to 25 pounds and composed of a soft plastic seat held by a metal rocking frame. The recalled sleepers have removable fabric covers that were sold in 14 patterns and colors. The sleepers were manufactured in China and imported by Fisher-Price Inc., of East Aurora, New York. and sold at mass merchandise stores nationwide and online since September 2009 for between $50 and $85. Units currently in retail stores are not included in this recall. The CPSC is warning consumers to immediately check for mold under the removable seat cushion and to stop using the product if any is suspected. Mold can be detected by spotting dark brown, gray, or black spots on the surface or in crevices of the product and infants may show mold exposure symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, coughing up blood, wheezing, tearing and/or redness of the eyes. Mold is particularly dangerous to small children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems because if the mold causes an infection in the lungs it can travel through the blood to an individual’s brain, heart, kidneys, and skin posing potentially life threatening injuries. Consumers with mold growth can contact Fisher-Price at (800) 432-5437 or online at www.service.mattel.com for cleaning instructions or further assistance. She is now 7 months old & sti naps in it daily, last month she had rsv & bronchilitis. When I heard of the recall I immediately checker her sleeper & found mold. I frequently wash the removable pad & thoroughly dry it. I now believe that the rock n play is the reason my daughter was so sick! Lauren January 11, 2013 I have the rock and play. My daughter slept in it since she was 4 months old to january 8, 2013 when i noticed the recall due to mold. When i checked under the seat there were mod spores harvested on the hard plastic cover. When i called fisher price they stated that mold can form due to a variety of reasons such as a infants sweat, a humidifier, spit up, a leaky diaper, or placing the washed cover When mildly damp. Whatever the reason mold forms and is directly under where an infant is sleeping. Since the usage of the product my daughter has had a respiratory infection where she needed breathing treatments and ongoing hives on her cheeks. After reading the posts there are others that have had similar experiences which leads me to strongly believe there is a correlation. sara January 9, 2013 I need some advice my baby has been sleeping in the fisher price rock n play sleeper since birth. She is only 3 1/2 months and has been in and out of the doctors office with coughing and she also would gasp for air. She recently was just in the emergency room and had an awful ear infection she had to have 3 days of shots of anti biotics. today i found out her sleeper had been recalled for mold issues so i check under the cover and find a ton of black mold under it. i know without a doubt thats why my baby has been sick. i need to know if i could pursue getting compensation for my baby being ill also i have been sick and still am.
