Honda Portable Generator Recall Issued Over Gasoline Leaks, Fire Risks

Honda recalled more than 200,000 portable generators this week due to the potential for the fuel valve to leak, which could result in fires, property damage and injuries.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the Honda portable generator recall on March 20, following 19 consumer complaints indicating gas leaked from the fuel valve, increasing the risk of a fire and explosion risk in the presence of an ignition source.

The recall affects Honda EU2200i, EU220i Companion and EB2200i Portable Generators sold with either a red or camouflage cover. The brand name “HONDA” and the model name are printed on the control panel. Recalled units are marked with model numbers EB2200iTA, EU2200iTA, EU2200iTA1 and EU2200iTA2.

The recall includes approximately 200,000 generators that were manufactured by Thai Honda of Thailand. They were imported by American Honda Motor Company Inc., of Torrance, California. The generators were distributed for sale to authorized Honda power equipment dealers and Home Depot, among various other home improvement stores nationwide from February 2018 through February 2019 for between $1,100 and $1,300.

According to the CPSC, customers should stop using the recalled Honda generators immediately and contact their local authorized Honda power equipment service dealer to schedule a free repair. Honda stated it has begun contacting dealers to remove any remaining units from store shelves and are calling customers directly to inform them of the recall and planned remedy.

Customers with additional questions or concerns regarding the recall should contact American Honda toll-free at 888-888-3139 or visit them online and navigate to the “Recalls and Updates” page.
