Ford Super Duty Truck Recall Issued Over Risk of Fire After Accidents

More than half a million Ford Super Duty pickup trucks have been recalled, due to a risk that the seat belt pretensioner could cause a fire when activated, increasing the risk of injury to occupants following an accident or crash.

The Ford truck recall was announced by the manufacturer on December 13, warning that over 500,000 vehicles could be subject to a fire risk after an accident where the seat belt pretensioner was activated.

Ford is aware of at least one incident in the United States, which resulted in a Super Duty pickup truck fire following a crash.

The recalled trucks are equipped with a seat belt pretensioner system that, when deployed in an auto accident, may generate excessive sparks, allowing the interior carpet and insulation in the area of the B-pillar to catch on fire and spread throughout the cab.

Approximately 547,538 vehicles from model years 2017 through 2019 are impacted by the recall, including Ford Super Duty F-250, F-350, F450 and F-550 SuperCrew trucks with carpet flooring. The vehicles were manufactured by Ford Motor Company at its Kentucky Truck Plant from October 8, 2015 through October 29, 2019.

Ford announced an estimated 490,574 vehicles were distributed throughout the United States, 56,112 to Canada, and another 852 were distributed to Mexico.

The manufacturer instructs customers to contact their local dealer and reference the recall campaign number 19S52 to schedule a free repair appointment. Dealers will be instructed to apply foil tape to the carpet and carpet insulation and modify the sound deadener on the back side of the B-pillar trim panel.
