Bio Ionic Curling Iron Recall Issued Following Multiple Burn Injuries: CPSC

Bio Ionic Curling Iron Recall Issued Following Multiple Burn Injuries: CPSC

J&D Brush is warning consumers to stop using specific Bio Ionic curling irons following the discovery of a manufacturing defect.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the Bio Ionic curling iron recall on October 23, after hundreds of reports of barrels detaching from the device.

Curling irons can reach temperatures of more than 400 degrees Fahrenheit, using high heat to shape curls and waves. If the barrel separates during use, it can cause burns when it falls or if the user instinctively tries to catch it.

According to federal safety officials, there have been 258 reports of Bio Ionic curling iron barrels detaching, which have led to at least six minor burn injuries.

The recall affects approximately 357,000 Bio Ionic One-Inch Long Barrel Curling Irons with model number LXT-CL-1.0 and date codes ranging from July 2022 through December 2023. The date codes are engraved on the prongs of the plug in the format MMYY, representing the month and year of manufacture, with July 2022 appearing as 0722.

The curling iron features a black handle with a blue “BIOIONIC” logo and a black label displaying the operating instructions and model number. It has a black barrel measuring approximately 15.8 inches long, 1.65 inches wide, and weighing about 15 ounces.

The products were manufactured in China and imported by J&D Brush Co. LLC. They were sold online at Amazon and Bio Ionic, as well as in-store and online at SalonCentric, Ulta, Sephora and Nordstrom, and in salon and beauty supply stores nationwide from August 2022 through July 2024 for about $165.

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the recalled curling iron, unplug it, and contact Bio Ionic to register for a free replacement. Users will be instructed to cut off the plug and return it to the recalling firm using a prepaid shipping label.

For additional information or to contact the company, customers can reach Bio Ionic at 877-853-9627 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday.
