Cabot Wood Cleaner, Wood Brightener Recall Issued Due to Burn Risk

A recall has been issued for an estimated 28,400 containers of wood cleaner and brightener due to potentially defective seals, which may allow hazardous chemicals to come in contact with consumers. The chemicals pose a risk of serious injury or burns if they come into contact with the skin or eyes.

The Cabot Stains wood cleaner and brightener recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on September 27, after at least 3 incidents of leaks were reported.

Although no known injuries have been linked to the product, safety officials warn that consumers should stop using the wood cleaner and brightener immediately due to the risk that the chemicals may cause burning of the skin and blindness.

According to the CPSC, the spray pump used in both products have a defective seal, which can come loose, resulting in a leaks and a risk of chemical burns.

The recalled products are marketed under “Cabot Stains” name brand and consist of 17,500 units of the wood cleaner and 10,900 units of the wood brightener sold in 1.3 gallon white handled tanks, with a black pump assembly sprayer hose. The front has a yellow Cabot label and the instruction manual sheet has the UPC code 080351810503 on the wood cleaner and 080351810497 on the wood brightener bottles.

The products were manufactured by Cabot stains, a division of Valspar Corp., of Newburyport, Massachusetts. Products were distributed throughout the U.S. to Ace Hardware, Do It Best, Farm & Fleet, Lowes Home Improvement Stores, United Hardware, and other hardware stores nationwide from March 2011 until June 2012 for about $25.

Cabot Stains announced that consumers are encouraged to return the items to the store of purchase for a full refund and to not attempt to reuse empty containers. Consumers with questions can contact Cabot at (877) 755-3336 or can go to the company’s website at www.cabotstain.com/recall.
