Depo-Provera Lawsuit Filed Over Pseudotumor Cerebri Side Effects
A California woman indicates that side effects of the Depo-Provera birth control shot caused her to develop pseudotumor cerebri (PTC); a condition that involves a dangerous build up of fluid pressure around the brain, resulting in severe headaches, vision problems and other health complications.
In a complaint (PDF) filed in the California Superior Court for Alameda County in March, which was recently removed to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, Krystyne Lopez indicates that Pfizer failed to provide adequate warnings for users and the medical community about the link between Depo-Provera and pseudotumor cerebri.
Lopez indicates that she was diagnosed with the condition in November 2013, resulting in the need for multiple lumbar punctures. However, she did not discover that the pseudotumor cerebri side effects were caused by Depo-Provera until the last two years, indicating that the drug makers actively concealed information about the risks associated with the birth control shot.

Defendants failed to do so even after various studies showed that there were problems concerning the risks of PTC associated with Depo-Provera and/or its active ingredient, a synthetic progestin or Progesterone compound.”
Pseudotumor cerebri, which is also sometimes referred to as idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), typically causes severe headaches, ringing in the ears, blurred vision, blindness and other problems due to a build up of fluid pressure on the brain. While treatment for the condition can relieve the pressure, delay in removing the underlying cause of the fluid build up around the brain can result in permanent damage to the optic nerve, which may lead to blindness and other vision problems that can not be reversed.
The lawsuit filed by Lopez raises allegations similar to those being pursued in hundreds of Mirena IUD lawsuits, involving claims brought by women who developed the condition due to the long-acting birth control implant.
Health experts say that almost all cases of PTC/IIH result in some loss of vision. However, if detected quickly and treated, that vision loss can be negligible and often unnoticed. It is often linked to a form of optic nerve damage called papilledema. The lawsuits indicate that the manufacturers’ failure to warn about the PTC risks exposed women to an increased risk of severe and permanent injury.
Lopez presents claims for strict liability, negligence, breach of warranty, fraud, and fraudulent concealment.

I have pseudo tumor and I now know why I first had gotten sick when I was given the depo provera injection only I didn't know that until now! I've had my shunt replaced recently due to infection my opening pressure was 78 when they decided to put the first one in after 13 spinal taps! I need a lawyer

I was immediately taken into surgery to remove a portion of my skull. I went back into surgery to relieve pressure again & put in a shunt to control the pressure for the rest of my life. I had tons of symptoms in retrospect, I even spoke to my doctor about them. But I was on other medications that were new to me & we were altering dosages thinking that the symptoms were due to that. I give all credit to my eye doctor & God for that routine eye appt that saved my life! I had 4 young kids at that time & my husband & we had no idea what could have happened. I lost all peripheral vision & had limited straightforward vision, even though I had no vision issues prior. I was legally unable to drive for a period of time. With the surgery & shunt over the years I regained most of my vision. I am checked yearly by a neurology eye doctor who keeps in close contact with my neurology docs, who check me as the need may arise. This issue will never go away. I have to be careful forever because of this. So if there is a case again the makers of Depo-Provera, I would want to be a part of it. I knew none of these things were even possible. I was told it was a safe birth control option.

I received my injection 2006 I started to have some migraines but my mom and I did not put 2 and 2 together I was on it from 2006 to 2011. I became pregnant on the dep injection as well I then began to have black outs and vision impairments. First shot when i was 13, shortly after i started having chronic migraines. Then my blood platelet bottomed out so i was tested for leukemia, and diagnosed with Lupus. At 15 i started having unexplained seizures, multiple images, test always came back normal. I only took 2 shots, and 6 years no period. P.C.O.S. I got the implant put in after multiple overran cyst bursting to try and stop the pain[Show More]First shot when i was 13, shortly after i started having chronic migraines. To stop that bleeding they put me on the birth control pill as well, 2 months after the Implanon was inserted, i woke with a crick and no vision in my left eye. Within days went to my other eye. E.R couldnt find a cause, they sent me to Huntsville Al where they found papilledema's in both eyes. To get my vision back they did a lumbar puncture. I cant remember if i have ate some days. No short term memory, and chunks of long term gone. I cant walk a straight line, constantly running into things. Have constant uncontrollable mood swings. Constant pain in my head and moving my eyes. I have 3rd degree burns from having a seizure and falling on a hair straightener. 15 years of unanswered sudden medical issues. Never been able to drive, nor live alone. My brain always feels like there is a band wrapped around it and it is constantly tightening. And if i laugh or cough the pain is excruciating, feels like my brain is smacking my skull. I will be talking and words come out that i wasnt meaning to say. My life has been pain and issues for 15 years, from 2 shots. And i am just now seeing this connection. They say by the time im 30 ill be completely blind, im 28. After being told id never have children, i was blessed with a beautiful little girl, and because of 2 shots, i may not get to see her grow up. How awful to make someone go threw all this, how sad is it im 28 and there are days i cant remember if i have ate, showered, what i did. All i want is to live a happy pain free life with my daughter, and the depo and Implanon are both responsible. I am so mad. Also i just had another lumbar puncture yesterday 5-23-22. Please tell me what to do, because this has ruined chunks of my life.

Major vision loss, recently diagnosed with a meningioma. Estropia, crossing of eyes and bilateral atrophy optic something or another. Took depot for at least 10 years in 2000-2010. Wow! They say they may not be able to remove it and my eyes will continue to worsen. Major permanent hair loss.

I was on the depo shot for 5 years and now have lost complete vision in my left eye. The place I got it from every time never disclosed vision loss as a possibility.. I’m super pissed and might go after them for this.

If you have had depo shots and are having complications with your health go see a doctor for bloodwork and body scans. I had an endocrinologist help Me identify a brain tumor in My pituitary gland. That was after being told numerous times the only issue I had was obesity.

I was on the Depo shot for about 28 years. My doctor put me on it because I had Endometriosis and he wanted to stop my period. It did first shot. The only site effect I had was hair loss, didn't really notice any other effects. I do have congested heart failure and blood pressure problems, I don't know if any of my ailments have to do with the shot. I think that I should be in menopause naturally, but I've been in medical menopause for so long I wonder if maybe it was just old blood stored I hope so. I know the headaches aren't right , so thanks for giving me something to check into for them.

The tumor that was on my liver grew into my vena cava thats your ain vein going from your livef to your heart and everyday I didnt have the surgsty my life was put more at risk. It caused me to be disabled for life Ive noticed in the past several years blurry Vision , feeling like my head is heavy and full at times ,. These medication have took so much from me I am so depressed about it because someone should have to pay for what this and the other 2 hace done to me. They say there is nobody to testify on my behalf because they have no living known cases but me. If i would have died my report wouod hace been heart attach , stroke, or blood clot traveling to the heart because unless the autopsy person xoes a lengthy search with tests like mri's they wpuld have diagnosed with one of the 3 reasons i mentioned

Got my 1st shot in 96 last shot 2014. Had to have gallbladder removed 2016 no explanation just was told it was diseased. Diagnosed with HR positive invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) Breast Cancer 2019. Depo definitely had something to do with it! I wish I would NEVER have taken that shot! I'm convinced it caused my cancer and all the other issues not named!

It started with extreme weight loss I was about 125 and Depo took me down to 100. After I started to lose weight I noticed I was depressed, and wanting to die everyday and this was nothing like me. I didn't think anything of it until I noticed not one or[Show More]I took Depo Provera for ONE year and have experienced so many life changing problems. I didn't think anything of it until I noticed not one or two but THREE deep indentations in my right thigh where the shot was injected. I immediately stopped going back for the shot. But it didn't stop there...after getting off of the shot I had a period for 9 months straight not one day went by that I didn't bleed. I am too scared to see a doctor because my anxiety steers me away from it. To this day I am an extremely depressed person with bad anxiety, I still have indentations, and my leg aches all of the time...keeping in mind I haven't been on depo for 3 years. I'm only 19 years old I shouldn't have to go through these things because of a stupid birth control shot.

I was only 21 and didn’t know any better to ask any questions. I probably only had a few doses before just not worrying about it and quit. I was given the shot within hours of giving birth to my first child in 1993 by the hospital staff. I was only 21 and didn’t know any better to ask any questions. I probably only had a few doses before just not worrying about it and quit. Then after having another baby in 1996 I was given the shot again. I was on the shot ever since up until about 3-4 years ago. I was never informed of any side effects then other than possible weight gain, which I was ok with a few extra pounds. Some people told me they had gained over 100 pounds! I was thinking I was one of the lucky ones. No periods either. That’s always nice! The only thing I was ever told was I may want to take extra calcium and that was many years into it. I didn’t gain much, I was 98 lbs then and now I’m about 117 lbs. I’m ok with that. I did try to come off depo years later but had to end up having a dnc ( I was literally using a box of 40 super plus tampons along with pads and still bleeding through about every hour, embarrassing trying to work about a bunch of men), then a LEEP procedure, I had signs of cervical cancer. Afterwards I wouldn’t stop bleeding so the doctor put me on the shot again to make it stop. Thank goodness, I thought. After some thinking, I decided it was time to wean off depo and be normal, I figured I can’t have kids anymore, my doctor told me I probably wouldn’t carry full term if I did. My new husband at that time and I discussed no more kids, so he had a vasectomy. So no worries anymore, right? Wrong... towards the end of me being on depo, every 12 weeks or so I would start having achy hips and legs, just unusual but I asked the doctor. He and his staff that administered the shot told me my body was probably aching because it wanted that hormone and since I was on it for so long I probably needed to come more often. So they started scheduling me for every 9-10 weeks instead. Never saying anything about being on the shot for way too long! When I did come off the shot, I warned my friends that I may become a crazy hormonal b..ch. my anxiety of course was worse because I didn’t feel good. And had no answers as to why or even be able to explain to anyone why I felt this way. It was best to stay away from anyone so I didn’t have to explain. So my anxiety was bad. Now my cycle comes and goes about every 4 months or so, it’s hard to keep up because I think I’ll remember but I don’t once it’s over and done with. But it pretty much averages about every 4 months. Normal, nothing heavy or weird. I now have astigmatism in both eyes and wear bifocal contacts or glasses, have hearing loss, been diagnosed about 14 years ago wth IBS, fibromyalgia in 2014. Now I’m wondering if all this was caused by the depo shot. I have horrible horrible mind blowing ugly crying achy pain in my muscles and bones. My legs feel like they are throbbing so bad and will split in pain. My arms ache, my hands hurt, my back is always in pain, I’m always stiff. I can’t sleep like a normal person without taking drugs. My whole body burns and sometimes itches that I cause bruises myself from scratching. I do not take any medication for the diagnosed fibro but I do take Zoloft for the depression and anxiety, Xanax to try to sleep. I want answers! I can’t live in pain like this. I need to know if there’s something to help flush 20 years of this horrible drug out of my body. I’m now almost 47 and can’t even get out of bed to get a job because I wouldn’t be able to function. I can barely function at home. Nobody understands the pain and fatigue. HELP ME!!!! I stopped depo after 25 years. I was always told it was ok. I am 56 years of age from South Africa and have never been the same since. I am sick all the time. In constant pain, blurry vision, battle to balance. I only put on about 3 kgs during the 25 years weighing in at a good 54 kg. My weight now has dropped to 45 kg - not good for a 56 year old. I also had the shot given for 5 years. Since I stopped I have had more health problems. Im43 have severe migraines. Loss of vision. gets worse after reading. Restless legs and severe cramping during day. There are days L feel like my head is gonna explode and can't hear. After taking Depo I know that what has caused a lot of my deterring health. problems. No one ever warned about all this.

I developed a a pituitary tumor after getting the depo shot. My menstral cycle never returned and they blamed it on the pituitary tumor. I had all those symptoms of a pseudo tumor. I was told by 3 doctors I would never get pregnant after 13 year I was lucky.

A few years back I was Depo Provera injections. It caused weight gain. I was just diagnosed with breast cancer and I will need surgery with radiation therapy for a follow up. I do have cartilage loss in my knees.

I am on various meds for it for the rest of my life Since then, 2 more brain surgeries, last rites read to me twice, & just lots of scary shit that I could never have imagined. I was on the depo shot for 9 years in the late 90's early 2000's i was diagnosed with osteopenia which is mild bone loss. I was in my 20's when I got the news. And now I have pain in my joints all ove also wear glasses and I don't know if it is connected but I was also diagnosed with psoriasis 8 years ago.

Yes I took depovero shot for about 5 years now that I am 49 I have really bad migraine headaches blurred vision having a really hard time I don't know if this could be coming from the deposhot. But I see we all have the same symptoms that was receiving this injection. This is really sad they never tell you all of the symptoms that comes with these injections!!!!

I took the shot for about 5 years after the third year I developed loss of vision, diverticulitis, loss of cognitive abilities as well as other symptoms and in 2008/2009 was diagnosed with Idiopathic Hypersomnia.

My daughter at just 21 had a MINI STROKE that was brought on from the DEPO VERA SHOT, (AFTER JUST ONE SHOT) and at 27 ha a FULL STROKE BROUGHT ON BY THE SKYLA IUD (SYMPTOMS STARTED 2WKS AFTER IT WAS INSERTED) (even thought medical community wonty call it by that term.. Claim she was to young to have a stroke)

I have been getting Depo shots for about 7 yrs now..over the last few years I have gained weight and I have noticed a change in my vision,,just put it off to getting older..I have been getting migraines and a lot of pain in the back of my head..Definately need to check into this was never told the shot would cause issues,,it is suppose to be the safest birth control so I was told

When i hit puberty my mother made me get on the shot. I was on it until i was 19 i didnt have a period for 2 years after. I developed ibs and chronic migraines in my 20s. Now in my 30s my period is heavy and irregular.

I am havin several of these symptoms and feel like I am not able to remember things like I should be. I have been on the depo for more than 10 yrs and am deathly 34 yrs old. I have not had any tests done yet but this is scary!
