Ford Focus, Fusion Class Action Lawsuit Filed Over Power Steering Issues July 9, 2014 Irvin Jackson Add Your Comments A class action lawsuit has been filed against Ford Motor Company, alleging that the power steering system in some Ford Fusion and Ford Focus vehicles is defective and could increase the risk of drivers getting into auto accidents. The complaint (PDF) was filed late last month in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California by several plaintiffs, including William Philips, Phillip Clay Cecil, Robert Halsey, Temple Halsey, Performance Fire Protection, LLC and Jason Wilkinson. The lawsuit seeks class action status to represent anyone who purchased a 2010 through 2014 Ford Fusion or the 2012 through 2014 model year Ford Focus. According to allegations raised in the lawsuit, all of the Ford cars targeted by the class action claim use the Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system, instead of traditional hydraulic-assisted power steering pumps. The EPAS system uses a steering control motor, electronic control unit, torque sensor and steering wheel position sensor to help the driver navigate. See if you qualify for a sports betting addiction lawsuit. Learn More SEE IF YOU QUALIFY FOR COMPENSATION “The EPAS system, however, suffers from systemic defects,” the lawsuit claims. “The multitude of defective elements in the EPAS system renders the system prone to sudden and premature failure during ordinary and foreseeable driving situations.” Plaintiffs claim that the system seeps conforming coating onto the ribbon cable, causing loss of connections, the ribbon cable pins are misaligned, causing loss of connections and breakage of critical wiring, the contact plate can corrode, and there are defects in the system’s sensors and gear assembly. The lawsuit indicates that the Ford steering problems result in significantly increased effort needed to control the vehicle, and can cause drivers to get into an accident. Ford is allegedly aware of hundreds of complaints, according to the lawsuit, but has failed to act appropriately to ensure consumer safety. The complaint accuses the company of intentionally concealing the problem. None of the plaintiffs claim to have been in an accident caused by the steering system. The lawsuit points out that not only has Ford received complaints, but so has the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The lawsuit claims that the agency has received about 450 complaints of sudden failure of power steering loss regarding the affected vehicles. A number of those resulted in crashes and injuries. The claim accuses Ford of violating consumer protection laws, fraudulent concealment, unfair competition, false advertising, breach of warranty, negligent misrepresentation, negligence, unjust enrichment and fraud. He is a college student and drives great distances to come home every now and again. His steering went out while driving, he had no control of the vehicle. Ford knows there is an issue with their (EPAS) Electronic Power Assisted Steering and have done nothing about this. Not sure if it is a Software or hardware issue but someone is going to get killed from this. They need to take responsibility of their design flaw and recall these vehicles. They have failed to ensure consumer safety for the all mighty dollar. This is a clear violation of consumer protection laws, knowing this problem and not protecting the people who purchase their vehicles, thus paying Ford Motor Companies bills. I will never purchase a Ford again. John June 27, 2019 I bought a 2013 Focus in February. I did not notice any jerking at first, but after a week or two it was very obvious. The small dealer told me that it had a special transmission. Its special alright! Well, this is June and guess what? The steering is starting to become strange. As of yet, no warning lights have appeared. I don’t have the money to spend on repairs to this vehicle. I had a 2005 Focus which I loved. NEVER AGAIN WILL I BUY ANOTHER FORD PRODUCT. Especially after reading about all the Problems so many others are having with the same issues and Ford does nothing about them but suck it the money for their junk. Not that it will amount to anything, I am also writing a letter to Ford Corp. David May 28, 2019 I own a 2012 ford fusion and I went to pull in a car wash and the steering got had and i hit a concrete barrier and it busted my radiator and radiator support and have to fix it out of pocket Mariellen March 12, 2019 I just got an estimate for the same problem on my daughters 2010 Ford Fusion. 2 years ago I had to replace the transmission. I received a $1,600 estimate to replace the steering rack. Lisa February 12, 2019 Same thing just happened with my 19 year old son’s car. This is very dangerous and Ford needs to take ownership of the problem and fix these cars at no cost to the owner. When you purchase a car you expect things to come up but when it is happening to this many it is a default in manufacturing and they need to take responsibility. Own 3 Ford vehicles and will NEVER purchase another!!!! Will buy from a reputable manufacturer that actually cares about the safety of those driving their product. david February 9, 2019 2010 fusion, original owner. same problems as above. luckily no accidents but ford really needs to fix this problem. I wonder if I would trade it in on a new vehicle if they would inform the next owner or would just let it go and get the next person to pay. by the way I am a 34 yr. retiree from ford and I am very disappointed in this behavior by them. going to go back to the dealership and talk to the hmfic.we will see what happens Angela January 26, 2019 I own a 2011 Ford Fusion that we bought in 2014. Thursday I was driving home from work with a good amount of snow on the ground I might add when my power steering went out on me! Luckily I was able to get it home, but now the wheel won’t turn at all! I’m pissed because we only have a few payments left on this car and now I can’t even drive it! How do I find out if my car was included in the recall? I don’t have the money to buy a new car right now or spend $2000 on fixing the steering problem plus towing! Sloan December 28, 2018 I have a 2010 Ford Fusion. I just took my car to the Ford dealership for the air bag recall and to check out my power steering assist failure notice. I was told they need to replace my steering gear assembly and it is going to cost 2000.00. My power steering went out while I was driving. I was luckily able to pull over to the side of the road. April December 17, 2018 I’m reading about this class action suit …I want yo be included in this class action suit. I started reading about the Ford cars and all of the power steering issues. This just happened to me!! Got on my car leaving work all the indicators on the dashboard came on power steering now!!! Could not steer the car I panicked. Thank God I wasnt on a main road driving somewhere!!! If this has been an ongoing issue then why hasn’t Ford recall on power steering issues!!!! karen December 12, 2018 I was getting ready to leave work headed home and the steering assistant failure it became difficult to turn the wheel while exiting the parking lot. it read power steering failure system needs repair. I only had this car going on 1 month. i do like the car . so im hoping they can fix the problem lisa December 10, 2018 I have a 2010 ford fusion just had it at the dealership last week getting the recalled airbags replaced now my power steering just quit work while I was driving down a very curvy road this is ridiculous Alberto October 20, 2018 I have a 2010 ford fusion se. Service power steering light came on. I just paid $2,500 to get a new steering rack put in 8 mths ago, and here it went out again while I was on the highway. This is ridiculous!!! Not sure why there is no recall for this life threatening issue. I can’t afford to pay another big fix out of pocket, especially when I just got it fixed. I called ford dealership and they said it has a 2 year warranty but if it’s a different issue, I have to pay for another Dynastic ($100+) to find th e issue. 2 fixes with the power steering will cost me more then what the value of the car is worth. Fixing and selling it will only get me what I paid in repair. Electric power steering is the worse!! Stay away from ford!! Matt August 6, 2018 Ford Fusion 2012. “Service Advancetrac” “Power Steering assist Now” and “Tire Pressure Fault” all blinking, no power steering, this is the 3rd time. They did the recall of resetting the program, then they replaced steering gear for free. Now, its broken again and theres no more recall or warranty. This will continue to happen over and over, no matter how many 1800$ steering gears i replace this car with. Ford should be responsible for the entire price of all of these cars. And they know it – and thats why they wont help anyone or admit fault, and leaving people’s lives at risk. Ed May 24, 2018 My Dad purchased a brand new Ford Fusion in 2012 had it back to the dealer several times for power steering failure and since it was working at the time they said nothing was wrong with it. My dad has since passed away and my mom is now stuck with the car and the power steering just went and the car is now out of warranty. What happened to the class action suit was it settled. Mario January 26, 2018 January 25, 2018. My 2010 For Fusion with 77K miles just lost power steering while I was driving in the city at 45 mph. I don’t understand how Ford has not been held responsible for this manufacturing default. Can anyone point me in the direction of the class action law suit attorneys that are dealing with this case? marivel November 2, 2017 I have a 2010 ford fusion my rack and pinion was replaced after goin out in 2015 here we are 2017 n its saying service power steering and is not driveable….. smh ford did a recall but apparently my vin # is not on that list. I call bs. Ford should b responsible and fix the issue. cassie October 24, 2017 My sister has just recently been killed because of the epas steering effort in her 2011 ford fusion hybrid. KILLED! She is gone because of these discusting people that run ford motor company Carol October 16, 2017 Ford Motor is putting out defective cars. I own a 2014 Fusion with 11,000 miles on it and have experienced transmission problems and was told I would get a settlement to pay for our car plus extra cash, etc. and all the money went out to lawyers and other costs and the consumer received $1000. My transmission still is grabbing and jerking when I take off. My pressure light keeps coming on. Now I read this about the power steering. I’m 77 yrs. old and, if something would happen out on the road, I’m not sure I could handle it. If there is a chance it is defective I believe I”m eligible to have it taken care of before something happens. Lynn October 16, 2017 My son, 2013 Ford Focus that he purchased himself 14 months ago. While in the shop for the transmission issue that we are currently waiting to find out the ruling on that class action suit, the shop informs us that his EPAS is not working. First of all, it did not go in there for that problem only to be returned with no steering and a repair cost of $1800. josephine October 9, 2017 I never received a recall on my 2014 Ford Focus for the steering . but i did for the transmission and it still runs bad couple of close calls because when i start up from a stop sign when u go to take off it does not go if I floor it we go. Which I should not have to floor it . Has been in the dealers 3 times and they say its fine. They put in a new clutch and now if I go to use the shift that does not even work. Only works in drive. Teaka October 6, 2017 My transmission make a funny noise like rattling or something and sometimes it want change out. It drive like a standard shift but it’s and automatic! I can be going down the highway and the rpm will just shoot up and not change out for at least 10 to 15 sec! Please help Maria September 26, 2017 Last night my 2011 Ford Fusions power steering completely went out and couldn’t steer the vehicle at all, today we took it to a garage and it had to be reset but that makes me concerned that In the middle of driving it can just go out again and could cause a serious accident. Is there anything I can do about this matter as I see it is a common issue with fusions years 2010-2014 David September 19, 2017 2012 fusion….why was my vin number not in the recall??it almost caused me to crash with my family in the car!!!f$!#k ford Meca August 28, 2017 My power steering has went out in my 2013 Ford Flex. It shows that my year is under recall, but my vehicle is not by the vin number. I have been calling and has gotten no help. They are stating I have to take care of it myself. I am beyond pissed! Robin August 28, 2017 My 2013 Ford Focus’ steering wheel locked up on me while driving as I had my 7 year old in the car. I had to get guided off the road by police and later had the car towed. The ealer told me the rack and pinion needs to be replaced for $1800. I researched and found that these vehicles have a history of this fault yet have no record of my particular being recalled although seems it should be. Debbie August 27, 2017 I have had ENOUGH ~I ~my mother purchased me a ~2013 Ford Focus 24,000 miles on it in June 2015~I have had it in the shop ~they replaced a chip~it was jerking & heasiting ~it seemed better~ then started acting up again ~I called the service department ~he told me it was was normal for that year ~ it really acts up with the ac on ~then June 2017~Knowing I was having to take a detour ~I had all 4 tires and brakes replaced ,I couldn’t get it to accelerate at times my BLOOD Pressure & nerves have had it!! I was & still am living on a prayer ~I was even pulled over by police because he thought I was drunk ~I can’t tell you all how many times I almost was rear ended and with all the miles I drive a day and long hours to keep a job! ENOUGH ~ is enough ~I will go to the Ford dealer tomorrow instead of being put on hold during my lunch & break ~ I kept trying to deal with family problems & health issues now Ford neeeds to make good on my car~I bought a Ford because it’s made in the USA~and I heard great remarks about them ~especially gas mileage on a Ford Focus 😡 Amy August 22, 2017 I own a 2012 Ford Focus that has power steering assist issues. This problem has been happening for the past year and I could always remove the key and restart the car and it would be fine. But this past weekend the power steering assist light came on and the wheel is froze-it takes all the strength I have to barely move the steering wheel. I had to have it towed to the dealership and the diagnosis is that the rack needs to be replaced at a whopping $1,685.00. I agree that Ford needs to issue a recall about this problem…. I’m so disappointed with Ford and I will never recommend the Ford Focus to anyone considering purchasing this vehicle. I will steer them away!!! Terri August 18, 2017 Purchased a 2013 Ford Focus on 09/01/2014. My first payment wasn’t even due yet and I had it in the shop on 09/29/2014. I’ve had nothing put problems. Ford claimed they fixed it. I drive it a lot and I am way over my mileage for the warrenty. Now I have to pay out of pocket to have it fixed. Can’t believe Ford doesn’t stand behind their product. I’m still making payments on this car to. Making me think twice about letting it go back to the the dealship. What should I Do? Get Lawyer or tell them to come get it. I still owe a lot on it to. Angela August 15, 2017 I have a 2014 Ford Fusion Titanium. I have had problems with the following warning messages: Hill Assist not available, Service AdvanceTrac, Steering Assist Fault Service Required. I have taken this car in multiple times & had these messages documented when taken into a Ford dealership/service department prior to being out of warranty. I just learned that we will need to pay for the diagnosis because it is now out of warranty. So frustrating! They can’t do anything until the warning messages come on for the service department technicians. Meanwhile, there is a lawsuit dealing with this issue. Stephen August 14, 2017 I own a 2012 Ford Fusion with the magical number of around 48,000 miles and my car gave me a power steering assist fault error message while hours away from home, on the highway. The dealer gave me a bill for nearly $1,800 to replace this faulty part that Ford should recall. Marina August 12, 2017 I had the same problem happen to me just last week with my Ford Fusion 2013. I was making a left turn and all of a sudden my steering wheel won’t budge. I got it towed to a ford dealership and they told me it’ll cost $1,800 to fix. Absolutely outrageous that I have to pay for something that isn’t even my fault, it’s the manufacturer’s. I don’t understand why ford hasn’t had a recall yet. This is a safety hazard considering the fact that I could’ve gotten into an accident. William August 9, 2017 I have a 2012 Ford Focus with same issues it’s at dealer now then they took a week to tell me the problem when they already knew what was wrong with it on top of that they want 2300 to repair. Joe August 7, 2017 I have a 2011 Ford Fusion, my car had this problem and had a recall. It was repaired around a year ago and now it’s happening again. Melissa August 5, 2017 I have a 2010 Ford fusion. And couple of days ago the power steering just went out I also talked to Ford but not recall on it at all they won’t do anything but make a report Audrey July 28, 2017 108-A Horseshoe Drive My 2012 ford fusion lost electric power steering assist but vin number was not included in recall. Next vehicle I purchase will NOT be a Ford. My car should have been included in recall. Brick July 27, 2017 I am utterly disgusted with Ford. I have a 2014 Ford focus and my power assist steering light has come on. I contacted ford and they did a diagnostic and was told yhe epas(electronic power assist steering rack) needs to be replaced, which of course would cost me $1,945. I purchased the vehicle brand new in 2014 with only 20 miles on it and yes I am out of warranty due to the mileage on the vehicle because I travel a lot. However, with this known issue it is unbelievable that they are not accepting or calling a recall with this and won’t fix it without me paying for it. I pray that this settlement gets resolved and whomever is included in the lawsuit Sue’s the hell out of Ford and is compensated very heavily. A-Lise July 27, 2017 I have a 2010 Ford Fusion and I’m having the same problem! So there is a lawsuit yet they’ve done nothing about it yet?! If something happens while my boyfriend and/or I am driving I’m suing period. This is ridiculous. Recall this year immediately!!! It’s not safe. david July 21, 2017 my problem was the same as above some 2012 fusion were recalled but not my vin number. cost about the same 1700.00 nothing from ford how can you c harge 40,000.00 for a car have less than 70,000 miles on it and not accept responsibilety for the fault. next car will not say ford on the front maybe honda. Larry July 20, 2017 I have a 2013 Ford Fusion, my wife drives, and only has 18,000 miles on it. The power steering has just went out. Doing some research over the internet, I see that many people have had the same problem, yet Ford refuses to recall and make this right, It’s a very dangerous situation, It pisses me off. I hope Ford can see making this right. George July 16, 2017 2012 ford fudion hybrid. Steering went out 0n 7-15-17. Same message. Will take to dealer monday. Looking for info on possible recall. Katy July 13, 2017 I have a 2012 Focus, after multiple trips to the dealer for transmission issues and bills for diagnosis ford finally extended the warranty and covered the cost for tcm to be replaced. A year ago I started to have steering assist failures when starting my car. It was itermitent and not reproducible by the dealership. This week the steering assist failure is no longer intermittent. The dealership states the steering rack needs to be replaced at a cost of $1,700. I was told this issue is under recall on other ford models but not the focus. I called ford who confirmed this information and stated that they work with highway safety to make determinations on recalls and other than logging my complaint there was nothing further they could do. If you are having this issue intermittently it will have a full failure at some point, I would advise getting rid of the car asap. In the four years I have owned this car I have not trusted driving it long distance nor having my teenage daughter drive it. It has been towed multiple times each year leaving me without a car for multiple days each time while the dealership tries to reproduce issues. I am usually told they have not seen or heard of these issues before and appear perplexed yet a google search returns hundreds of complaints on the exact issues. I am very disappointed in Fords lack of an acceptable response to this issue which carries a high safety concern. Does anyone know the results or status of this lawsuit? Sam July 13, 2017 I have a 2010 Fusion and the power steering locked up on me too, what a damn shame Ford. EVERYONE PLEASE COMPLAIN TO THE NHTSA AT: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/ Bon July 12, 2017 Just happened the other day 7.10. The warning message came on ” Steering Loss Stop Safety ” I called the Ford Motor Company customer service@866.436.7332 for more information. It would have been covered by the recall with the code 15R01, but the dealer said it wasn’t the EPS motor bolt. They ran a diagnostic test that cost about $200 and said that the issue code was C102D instead, so it wouldn’t be covered by the Customer Service Satisfaction Program. From what I was told, C102D can mean different things. But, because the repair will need to be recalibrated, it can only be done at a dealership. Unless I want to tow my car to another dealership and run another $200 test, I am pretty stuck paying $1600. We only had this car for 4 years and already 4 recalls. I was really proud to buy American made. But now I miss my Honda. I had that car since we first got married. That was over 15 years ago… Ashley July 7, 2017 I have a 2010 ford fusion and my low tire preasure light came on the my service advancetrac light came on then my power steering locked up while driving and said service power steering now called and it will be and 1800 dollar fix i have 2 kids and we could have wrecked and ford will not do anything to help fix the issue Anna July 6, 2017 My 2011 Ford fusion has a electric power steering the reading shows service power steering now. It is too hard to steer. Called ford Dealership about this problem because it is on the recall list for 2011 ford fusions. They tell me it’s only by Vin#. But my car is a 2011same as the recall models. Had it looked at. Gonna cost me $1800. I can’t afford it. Please help Shelly June 29, 2017 I had the same thing on my 2013 for Fusion yesterday. Cannot get in the shop for 3 days and now from what I see I will have to pay 2,000 to get fixed for a Ford issue. This is ridiculous on the newer cars. I don’t even have 50,000 miles on my car and this was a huge investment. I guess you have to have a higher up at Ford have this issue or one of their family members before it becomes a consumer issue. I do NOT have that kind of cash to fix a manufacturer’s issue. Stephanie June 27, 2017 I have a 2014 ford fusion and I am having the same issues. I lost power steering and the car said power assist system faulty, the steering wheel became stiff. I took it in to the dealership and they said the steering rack had to be replaced and it’d be $2,000+. I called around to and spoke to various mechanics and the majority of them thought it was odd that it wouldn’t be covered under the recall and most thought the dealership just didn’t want to replace the steering wheel gear for free and were trying to pull a fast one on me. They all said it was not ok for a car this new(ish) to be having issues such as having the steering rack replaced. I called corporate and they built a case which I am currently waiting to hear back from. In addition I’m having issues with the A/C where cold air blows on the passenger side and hot on the drivers side which I found out it was the AC blend door acutator. Lori June 19, 2017 Purchased my 2011 Ford Fusion last October. About a week ago the advancetrack light came on. I have scheduled the two recalls to be fixed thrusday. At one point as I was driving all my dashboard lights came on! I can’t afford to have my car break down. What is wrong with ford! Nichelle June 19, 2017 I have a 2012 Ford Fusion , on June 16 my 21 year old son was driving the car he was not far from the house. He said all of a sudden the steering became hard for him to control and maneuver. When he made it home he told me the message “Service Power Steering System Now” was displayed in the message window. So I went online to see if others had similar problems and discovered there were a large number of others. I also discovered there was a recall but not for all ford fusion. I had the car towed to the dealership they diagnosed the problem and stated the rack pinion needed to be replace and would cost me $2300 and too top it off I have 3 recalls on my car. I told dealership I will never buy another ford car and will not recommend anyone else to ford. I told the dealership I have never had so many problem with a car. I can’t open my car from the inside on the driver side and was told that it will cost me $400 to have fixed, 3 weeks ago my A/C system stop working and now the power steering. I only have one year left to pay on the car. I also told the dealership the last car I had after paying it off I drove that car for 12 more year with only minor wear and tear repairs. I can’t understand why all these cars were not listed to this recall if we all are experiencing the same problems as other models that was recalled. If the other models are having the same problem why is this not a safety issue to include the other models. Amy June 12, 2017 Same thing happening to my 2010 Ford Fusion. Shame on you Ford!!!!!!!!!!
