The FDA has urged all consumers to immediately stop using Hydroxycut, as a number of reports involving serious liver injury, liver transplant and at least one death have been associated with using the weight-loss products. The manufacturer, Iovate Health Sciences, Inc., has also agreed to issue a Hydroxycut recall for 14 different versions of their product.

Hydroxycut is a dietary supplement that is marketed to help people lose weight, burn fat, enhance their energy, assist with low-carb diets and for water loss.

According to a statement released by the FDA, Hydroxycut problems have been associated with at least 23 reports of serious liver problems, ranging from jaundice to liver damage requiring a liver transplant.

In addition to the risk of liver injury, the FDA also indicates that reported problems have included seizures, heart problems and a serious type of muscle damage known as rhabdomyolysis, which could lead to other health problems like kidney failure.

At this time it is unknown which ingredients may be causing the Hydroxycut issues or whether any particular users or types of usage places consumers at an increased risk. However, the FDA indicates that even people who have not had any pre-existing medical conditions have ended up requiring a liver transplant after Hydroxycut use.

Hydroxycut side effects could surface while the product is being used or within several months after it is stopped. Symptoms of a potential Hydroxycut liver injury could include yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice), brown urine, light-colored stools, excessive fatigue, stomach or abdominal pain, weakness, nausea, vomitting and loss of appetite.

This Hydroxycut recall applies to the following products, which are being removed from the market:

  • Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore Liquid Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Max Liquid Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets
  • Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Drink Packets
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore Drink Packets (Ignition Stix)
  • Hydroxycut Max Drink Packets
  • Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)
  • Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
  • Hydroxycut 24
  • Hydroxycut Carb Control
  • Hydroxycut Natural

These products contaiin a variety of herbal extracts, chemicals and metals which could cause liver damage, even when the product is used as indicated on the warning label. Therefore, consumers have been asked to immediately stop taking it.

Individuals who have any of the recalled products have been advised to return them to the place of purchase. However, if any liver injury or symptom of potential problems have occurred, product liability lawyers have recommended that anyone who is considering pursuing a Hydroxycut lawsuit preserve any unused portion of the bottle until after any potential claim has been fully investigated.

I took one single dose or Hydroxycut hardcore. I had a bit of a stomach ache early on, nothing major. Then, last night, I started having back pain and knew that it was coming from the inside. This morning I looked up Hydroxycut hardcore and liver damage and everywhere I looked my suspicions were confirmed. Now this morning I noticed that my skin looked different, like it was sunburned, then I read that jaundice is another symptom. I took one single dose! This stuff is going in the toilet. I’m going to report it to the FDA. I encourage all of you do the same.

I took 4 Hydrycut hardcores over 2 day period and got bad pain in lower back,and pains spasm in neck, I been drinking lots of water and cranberryjuice hoping I can clean my system out.pains gone after 2 days but still worried if It caused any serious damage too liver and kidneys.

I have been fighting several liver problems over the last 4 years, much like most of you I am young (28) don’t drink or do drugs, and yet the VA has spent over 1 million dollars trying to find out why my levels are so high and why I have growing masses on the inside of my liver. To look at me am fit 5’7” and only weigh 180lbs. No history of liver problems, but what I do know is that I took hydroxycut while in Afghanistan and have had severe health problems since. My advice is to stop taking the supplement but DO NOT throw the bottle away or should I say “evidence”. Because we live in America, we have the oppurtunity to get the company to do more indepth research before selling a product so that what has happened to us does not happen to anyone else. I wish you all the best, I will likely be facing a liver resection here in the next few months, keep pushing as these problems have the abilty to pull you down quick.—Matt

I am really scared…I too am having liver issues. I have NEVER drank, smoked or done drugs. I am a healthnut who has also cycled Hydroxycut in and out of my workouts for years. I had a ton of symptoms that were originally diagnosed as a thyroid tumor – but along with that the doctors kept testing my liver and were baffled by the damage – firtst thinking it was linked to my diagnosed hyperthyroidism. I JUST got off hte phone with the endocrinologist who told me they are setting me up with a liver specialist at the Mayo Clinic as soon as possible. They no longer believe the damage is due to the Hyperthyroidism as treatment for that has not brought any relief. Liver continues to worsen with each subsequent test. I will never take another Hydroxycut and I hope anyone reading will stop. This has halted my life. Janaury of 2009 I was healthy as can be – hiking – weighlifting – very fit. I am 47. 8 months later I have gained 20 pounds – cannot even do a lunge nor lift any weights beyond a couple of pounds…. walking the dog is a chore. This is terrifying for me…… STOP taking the stuff!!!!

over the last 4yrs i have been diagnosed with primary liver damage also hair loss in spots severe stomach pain yellowing of skin and eyes dark urine i have been to johns hopkins also seeing a gastro dr put on meds for the rest of my life iam only 37 but until 3 months ago i was baffled i never drank or smoked no drugs worked out 5 days a week played sports but i had severe stomach pain went to the er after 3 days of test they wanted to do surgery but because of my liver the local hospital would not operate so i went to university of md medical center and we broke my test down i have had every possible test known for the liver mri ercp c-scan biopsy all more than once and it 99.9% its hydroxycut i used it way to long i cycled like it said but now i paying for it and there is no cure just pills to try and control it i was very healthy until i took this it might be rare but it happens

i posted the eairier comment about prilosec otc i didn’t have any of this vomiting or polyops before i started taking the prilosec. i looked up side affects of prilosec that were not listed with the medication when i get it from the pharmacy prilosec can cause stomach poylops. i had them on the bottom opening of me esophogus causing my esophugus not to close all the way alowing reflux to occur. i would get this vomiting that would last up to 4 days and ended up going down the emergancy room several times because of it and was getting dehydrated all this vomiting and abdominal pain made me miss work and eventually my work let me go because i was missing so much work. now i’m unemployed with 2 kids one of which is only two months old.

I have been taking this product and experienced pain round my liver and swelling. After reading the comments of other users I just tossed the rest into the garbage. So, that was good. However, I am amazed that so many people cannot construct a proper sentence or at least know how to spell.

Now… I finally know what made me so very ill, almost one year ago. I have had all of the symptoms while taking Hydroxycut, but what I didn’t know that Hydroxycut cause it until now!. I was rushed to the Doctor for medical help and stayed in the hospital for 5 days. My liver had swelled up and I almost died if my mother had not gotten me there in time. I am glad to be alive and happy to now know what made me so very ill, because I didn’t know and the doctors didn’t know. This is not the end to my story, it’s the beginning.

I have been using Hydroxycut from Muscletech on / off for two years. It has always worked very well for me and I have not had any side effects what so ever. I am obviously very concerned with the recent news and will stop using immediately. I think that this calls for products to be thouroughly tested prior to going on the market and makes you wonder about all the other products available on the supplement market.

I have been seriously thinking of trying this product for months and had it saved in the shopping cart on gnc.com, about to buy it before it got recalled. Thank goodness I had second thoughts and waited. Losing weight is not worth losing your health!

A well-written story, however you should be asking the question: why aren’t more harmful products being pulled from shelves? According to the CDC, for example, on average 500 people per year die from taking aspirin in America AS INSTRUCTED on the label, and thousands are hospitalized each year for taking aspirin due to liver damage. Yet, aspirin is still sold over-the-counter even to children. Now, I am not proposing that aspirin should be removed from the shelves any more than should Hydroxycut. My point is that the only reported cases I’ve seen from the CDC so far regarding Hydroxycut was regarding people who abused the product not following label directions. We’ve got to follow the money trail on this story because almost identical products to Hydroxycut are being sold “by prescription” manufactured by the nation’s large pharmeceutical companies who’s executives sit on the FDA board of directors. Hydroxycut is an effective non-prescription over-the-counter product for those who wish to use it that sells for 1/4 the price of identical prescription products. I just thought I’d throw my twice-cents worth your way especially since other common over-the-counter products result in far more deaths and damage than Hydroxycut, however they are manufactured by large chemical companies with the cash to bribe Congressmen and the FDA to keep their products on store shelves. I think Frenda is really crazy with his comment. It may have worked for Frenda with no side effects, but to another, it could be FATAL. Whatever that has fatal side effects, it is better to err on the side of caution. It may have worked well for 99.99% of people, but what about those who have suffered and died as a result of liver damage or even death?

Reply to Frenda: Yes I totally agree!! Anything that is proven to cause liver damage/problems should definitely be put back on the shelves. Who cares about anyone else? We’re all out for ourselves anyway.

I am very scared! I have been using Hydroxycut on and off for a long time. I presently have 2 containers from which i am using. I have been seeing physician for over 8months or so for pain in my right upper abdomen, they have been working me up to check my liver, nothing is of yet conclusive.I have had CT scan, x-rays. They still cannot find what is wrong. What symptoms are these people having? What can i do to make sure this is not affecting me? O course i dont keept the box that the medicartion came in. But i have the lot number is 6518009.

So Im watching the news tonite and here pops up recall on hydroxycut- Wow! Ive been taking for 6 months now, 2 in the am and 2 in afternoon. I have had just recently heart racing, that at times I could feel through my neck. Then at work one day felt as though my heart flipped. Guess now Im freaked out about it. Then I just bought some other day, think ive had 8 caps out of it. Always something.

i took hydroxicut hardcore,and one morning i feelt very bad almost pasting out. i called my doctor and he made me drink lot of water to clean my stomached. and then couple days later i feelt weak,yellow eyes,the doctor told me maybe i have hepatitis A,but after checking up 3 months later my blood dosent have anything. thanks that i stop using the hidroxicut. i called the company and they told me that nobody had any complaint,i send the bottle to them and they refund my money

i felt very bad,and the doctor thought that i have hepatits A and after stop using hidroxicut hardcore,the the symptoms are gone,i checked my blood and nothing shows anymore. i called the company when i start feeling bad and they asked me to send the bottled to then and they refund my money,arent know if i still have any damage in the liver
