Hyundai Santa Fe Recall Issued Over Airbag Deployment Problems

2024 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid

Hyundai is recalling nearly 50,000 Santa Fe vehicles from the 2024 model year, due to a problem that can cause the airbags to deploy randomly or not at all, increasing both the chances of an auto accident and the risk of injuries from one.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the Hyundai Santa Fe recall on July 26, which included a “do not sell” warning for dealerships that may still have the 2024 model sports utility vehicles (SUVs) on their lots.

Officials warn that the affected vehicles have a defective design, which may allow the main floor wire harness to be damaged by contact with the second row’s folding seats hinge assembly. A damaged main floor wire can lead to the illumination of an airbag warning light, random airbag deployment, or cause the airbag to fail to deploy in the event of a crash.

If an airbag fails to deploy during a crash, occupants are left unprotected, increasing the risk of severe injury or death. Conversely, unexpected or overly forceful deployment can cause fractures, facial injuries, or even fatal injuries, particularly to children and smaller adults.

At least eight incidents have been linked to the defective airbags, according to the NHTSA.

Vehicles affected by the recall include the 2024 model year Hyundai Santa Fe, produced between December 28, 2023 and July 18, 2024; and the 2024 Santa Fe Hybrid, produced between March 6, 2024 and July 23, 2024. An estimated 49,719 vehicles are affected.

Hyundai expects to begin sending notification letters to registered owners by September 23, 2024 by first-class mail, instructing them to visit a Hyundai dealer to inspect and secure the wire harness. If damage is found, the harness will be replaced at no cost and secured with clips to keep it from interfering, regardless of warranty status. Hyundai will also reimburse owners for out-of-pocket expenses related to the recall.

Owners experiencing any problems should visit a dealer immediately for diagnosis and repair. Those with questions about the recall may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460.
