Hyundai Santa Fe Recall Issued Over Airbag Deployment Problems

Defective airbags in Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs have been linked to at least eight incidents where they failed to deploy in an accident, or deployed at random times, endangering occupants.

Hyundai is recalling nearly 50,000 Santa Fe vehicles from the 2024 model year, due to a problem that can cause the airbags to deploy randomly or not at all, increasing both the chances of an auto accident and the risk of injuries from one.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the Hyundai Santa Fe recall on July 26, which included a “do not sell” warning for dealerships that may still have the 2024 model sports utility vehicles (SUVs) on their lots.

Officials warn that the affected vehicles have a defective design, which may allow the main floor wire harness to be damaged by contact with the second row’s folding seats hinge assembly. A damaged main floor wire can lead to the illumination of an airbag warning light, random airbag deployment, or cause the airbag to fail to deploy in the event of a crash.

If an airbag fails to deploy during a crash, occupants are left unprotected, increasing the risk of severe injury or death. Conversely, unexpected or overly forceful deployment can cause fractures, facial injuries, or even fatal injuries, particularly to children and smaller adults.

At least eight incidents have been linked to the defective airbags, according to the NHTSA.
