Jeep Engine Failure Recall Issued Following Multiple Fires, Injuries: NHTSA

Jeep Engine Failure Recall Issued Following Multiple Fires, Injuries NHTSA

More than 100,000 newer model Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee 4XE vehicles are being recalled due to concerns that engine debris left over from the manufacturing process may cause a fire.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee recall on November 13, warning that some engines may not have been properly cleaned during manufacturing, leading to sand contamination.

Sand in the engine allows abrasive particles to circulate through the system and wear down critical components. This can reduce lubrication and increase friction, which may lead to overheating or loss of compression. Over time, the engine may eventually fail, raising the risk of a fire or auto accident.

Chrysler, the parent company of Jeep, first detected the problem on May 22, 2025, after a rise in engine compartment fires and sudden loss-of-propulsion incidents involving certain Jeep models. A months-long investigation later found sand contamination inside affected engines, which occurred when components were not fully cleaned after the casting process.

According to the NHTSA Safety Recall Report (PDF), Jeep has documented at least 144 warranty claims, 50 service reports, 36 customer assistance records, 36 fires and three injuries that may be linked to the defect.

The company confirmed the safety issue on October 30, prompting a voluntary recall (PDF) announced on November 13, which covers:

  • 2024 and 2025 Jeep Wrangler 4XE models
  • 2023 through 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4XE plug-in hybrid vehicles

Drivers of affected vehicles are warned that they may experience a knocking noise from the engine compartment or a malfunction indicator lamp prior to catastrophic engine failure.

Customers should begin receiving notification letters on December 29, providing additional information about the safety risk. An additional letter will be sent once the final remedy is available.

Chrysler’s number for the recall is 78C. Owners with questions can contact Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403, or reach the recall representative, Emily Smith, at emily.c.smith@dot.gov

Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-275-9171), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Jeep Fire Risks

Jeep has faced numerous recalls and lawsuits related to fire risks in recent years. Earlier this month, a separate Jeep recall was announced for certain Wrangler and Grand Cherokee SUVs due to battery fire risks. In addition, more than 154,000 SUVs were recalled due to battery fire risks last year.

In November 2024, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Chrysler, also known as FCA US, over fire risks affecting certain 2021 through 2023 Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator models.

Another lawsuit was filed in March 2024, alleging that certain Jeep Wrangler electric vehicles were prone to catching fire and exploding. A year later, in March 2025, a man filed a class-action lawsuit claiming that Jeep Wranglers remain a fire risk despite multiple recalls intended to address the issue.
