KidKraft Play Kitchen Recall Issued Following Toddler Death: CPSC Manufacturer is recalling the play kitchens due a serious risk of strangulation and asphyxiation the product may pose for young children. August 1, 2025 Darian Hauf Add Your Comments Federal safety officials are instructing families throughout the U.S. to immediately stop using KidKraft Farm to Table Model Play Kitchens, due to a dangerous design defect that poses a strangulation hazard, which has already resulted in the death of a 23-month old child. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued the KidKraft play kitchen recall on July 31, warning that children can become entangled if their clothing catches on the accessory hooks while climbing on the set, creating a serious risk of strangulation. The KidKraft Farm to Table play kitchen is recommended for children aged 3 years and older. It is designed for pretend play and includes a fridge, oven, stove and sink, along with hooks intended to hold kitchen accessories such as pots and pans. However, federal regulators have determined that the play kitchen’s design poses an unreasonable risk of strangulation, asphyxiation, and even death for young children. The recall comes after a tragic incident in 2023, when a 23-month-old child died after his shirt became caught on one of the accessory hooks while climbing through an opening at the back of the playset. The child was unable to free himself and died from strangulation and asphyxia. Children’s Product Safety Risks Amid increasing concerns over product safety, federal officials have issued numerous recalls and safety warnings in recent years involving suffocation, entrapment and strangulation hazards tied to children’s products, particularly nursery items and playsets. In August 2024, the CPSC issued a series of warnings involving cribs, cradles, playpens, and inclined infant sleepers and carriers. The agency cited design flaws such as low sidewalls that failed to contain infants, overly thick sleeping pads that increased the risk of suffocation, entrapment hazards between stroller seats and frames or within enclosed openings, and restraint systems that were too tight, restricting infant movement. Later that year, the CPSC announced new federal safety standards for infant support cushions, aimed at reducing the growing number of preventable injuries and deaths linked to their use. The CPSC also issued a warning about Hiccapop PlayPad play yard mattresses that failed to meet federal safety standards in March of this year, noting that gaps between the mattress and the sides of the play yard could increase the risk of suffocation and death for small children. In addition, studies have found that more than 170 children died on average each year between 2019 and 2021 due to unsafe sleep environments created by commonly used nursery products, including cribs, cradles, playpens and inclined infant sleepers and carriers.
