Lawsuit Alleges Roblox Lacks Safeguards To Protect Children From Sexual Predators

A Georgia mother says her nine-year-old son was groomed into sending explicit images and videos to multiple sexual predators due to a lack of safeguards on the Roblox gaming app.

Identified only as Jane Doe, she filed the complaint (PDF) on behalf of herself and her minor child, identified only as John Doe, in Gwinnett County Court in Georgia on August 29, naming Roblox Corporation as the defendant. The claim was later transferred to federal court in the Northern District of Georgia.

The Roblox video game construction set premiered in 2006, allowing users to build their own games, create customizable avatars, make in-game purchases, interact with other players, and explore player-created worlds and games.

However, in recent years, hundreds of reports have surfaced involving children being sexually exploited, coerced or even abducted by predators who used the Roblox platform to make contact. Parents, advocacy groups and law enforcement agencies have warned that the game’s open chat features and lack of effective moderation have created a dangerous environment for young users.

Despite the company issuing a press release earlier this week announcing that new age verification technology will be implemented on the platform this year, the creators already face more than 300 Roblox child exploitation lawsuits by parents who say it failed to take reasonable steps to protect children from sexual predators.

According to Doe’s lawsuit, the child, now 10, first started playing Roblox when he was just seven years old. Because it was designed and marketed for children and claimed to be safe, his mother trusted the app.

However, by the time the boy was nine, he had met several sexual predators online who pretended to be other children. The individuals groomed the child and convinced him to send them explicit pictures and videos, then convinced him to send some images to his school.

“Plaintiff has suffered profound harm from the grooming, manipulation, and exploitation that he experienced on Defendant’s app. He continues to suffer from severe mental health issues, including difficulty trusting others, persistent anxiety, and he was eventually required to change schools.”

Roblox made changes in November 2024, preventing adult accounts from being able to directly message a child under the age of 13, but the lawsuit notes that the app still relies on self-reported birthdays, which would not prevent sexual predators from pretending to be children, as they allegedly did in this case.

Doe and other parents filing similar lawsuits say the app is more focused on maximizing unhealthy levels of engagement from children than protecting them. Its virtual worlds can vary widely in appearance and intent, with many clearly focused on adult sexual activities, making it a destination, and all too often, a first point of contact, for sexual predators.

The lawsuit presents claims of fraudulent concealment and misrepresentation, negligent misrepresentation, negligence, failure to warn and negligent failure to warn, design defect, unreasonable design and negligent undertaking.

Roblox Sexual Exploitation Lawsuits

The maker of the game currently faces hundreds of Roblox lawsuits from families who claim the platform was deliberately designed in ways that allow predators to target children. Many of the complaints contend that the company has ignored repeated warnings about grooming and sextortion, even as it continues to promote the game as safe and appropriate for kids.

According to the filings, predators often use private chats, friend requests and in-game tools to build trust with young users, sometimes offering Robux as payment for explicit images or resorting to threats to extort them. Families argue this not only puts children at risk of exploitation, but also links Roblox’s revenue model to abusive behavior.

The lawsuits indicate that victims have suffered lasting psychological harm, including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and suicidal thoughts. Plaintiffs are seeking financial damages as well as broad safety reforms to better protect minors on the platform.

Individuals who believe they or their children were harmed through Roblox can have their situation reviewed by a Roblox sexual exploitation lawyer to see if they qualify for a lawsuit or potential settlement. Case evaluations are confidential, and lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning no fees or costs are charged unless compensation is secured.
