Roblox Lawsuit Claims Game Led to 10-Year-Old Girl Being Sexually Exploited

Roblox Lawsuit Claims Game Led to 10-Year-Old Girl Being Sexually Exploited

A lawsuit alleges that Roblox’s gaming platform enabled a predator to target, groom and sexually exploit a 10-year-old girl, raising a series of questions questions about the company’s safety controls and protections for young users.

The complaint (PDF) was filed on behalf of a minor identified as Jane Doe L.G. by her parent, Jane Doe B.G., in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on December 30, naming Roblox Corporation as the defendant.

Roblox Child Exploitation Concerns

Roblox is an online gaming platform introduced in 2006 that allows users to create and play games, customize avatars, interact with other players and make in-game purchases. The platform has been heavily promoted to children and younger audiences, contributing to its widespread popularity among minors.

However, critics and parents have raised concerns in recent years about Roblox’s communication features, alleging it has been linked to numerous incidents of child exploitation. Reports have described situations involving grooming, coercion and other forms of abuse facilitated through in-game chat and social interactions.

Those concerns have fueled a growing wave of Roblox sexual exploitation lawsuits across the United States. Plaintiffs allege the platform was designed to prioritize user engagement and monetization while failing to adequately protect children from foreseeable safety risks, leading to in-person assaults, sextortion, explicit image exchanges and severe psychological harm.

According to Jane Doe B.G.’s lawsuit, Jane Doe L.G. began playing Roblox at a young age when she was contacted by an older user who allegedly used in-game messaging and social features to build trust, manipulate her and escalate the relationship into sexually exploitative conduct. The complaint alleges Roblox failed to detect, disrupt or prevent the interaction, even though warning signs were present.

The lawsuit claims the alleged predator used Roblox’s communication tools to groom the child over time, gradually introducing sexual topics and coercive behavior. B.G. suggests that the platform’s design made it easy for adults to interact privately with children, while offering limited and ineffective monitoring of inappropriate communications.

According to the complaint, the exploitation has had long-lasting effects on the child’s mental health, including difficulty trusting others, anxiety and self-harm.

B.G. argues that Roblox knew or should have known its platform posed a significant risk to minors, citing prior reports, complaints and lawsuits alleging similar patterns of child exploitation and grooming involving young users.

“Plaintiff has suffered profound and enduring harm. This includes significant emotional distress, psychological trauma, and mental anguish. Plaintiff’s experiences have led to a loss of trust, safety, and personal security, depriving her of the opportunity for a normal and healthy development. The injuries she sustained are severe, ongoing, and permanent, affecting her daily life and emotional health in lasting and immeasurable ways.”

The lawsuit alleges Roblox failed to implement reasonable safety measures, including effective age verification, proactive monitoring of communications and meaningful parental controls. It further claims the company downplayed known risks while marketing the platform as a safe, child-friendly gaming environment.

The complaint raises allegations of negligence, failure to warn, negligent infliction of emotional distress and violations of consumer protection laws. It is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, as well as injunctive relief aimed at forcing Roblox to strengthen safeguards for minors.

Roblox Sexual Exploitation Lawsuits

These allegations echo claims raised in a growing number of Roblox lawsuits filed nationwide, accusing the company of being a hub for child sexual exploitation due to inadequate moderation and safety practices. In several cases, like that involving Jane Doe L.G., families allege the platform allowed predators to contact, groom and abuse children with little interference.

While Roblox has publicly stated it is committed to improving safety and moderation, many plaintiffs argue that these measures have come too little and too late, with prior efforts being insufficient to protect young users from foreseeable risks.

Due to similar issues of fact and law across the litigation, all federal Roblox child exploitation lawsuits filed across the U.S. have been centralized in the Northern District of California for coordinated pretrial proceedings under U.S. District Judge Richard Seeborg.

As part of that process, Judge Seeborg is anticipated to oversee the selection and preparation of a small number of representative “bellwether” cases. These early trials are intended to test common evidence and expert testimony and provide insight into how juries may respond to the core allegations.

Although the results of these trials will not apply to other plaintiffs, they are likely to influence settlement discussions nationwide. If the parties are unable to reach a resolution following those proceedings, the remaining cases could be sent back to their original courts to move forward as individual trials.
