Indivior To Pay $300M To Settle Suboxone Opioid Marketing Claims By DOJ, States April 29, 2021 Irvin Jackson Add Your Comments The makers of the opioid addiction treatment Suboxone have agreed to pay $300 million to settle allegations raised by several states, claiming Indivior falsely advertised the drug as safer and less prone to abuse than it actually is. Last year, Indivior reached a $600 million settlement with the federal government over charges of aggressive and deceptive marketing. On Tuesday, the manufacturer agreed to pay another $300 million in a state settlement (PDF), which will be split among all 50 states and the District of Columbia, according to a press release by California Attorney General Rob Bonta. The states’ attorneys general alleged that Indivior improperly used Medicaid funds, due to its advertising techniques, which deceived regulators and the medical community about safety the profile and Suboxone risks. Lawsuits are being pursued by users of Suboxone who experienced tooth loss, broken teeth or required dental extractions. Settlement benefits may be available. Learn More SEE IF YOU QUALIFY FOR COMPENSATION Suboxone (buprenorphine and naloxone) is a drug approved to treat recovering opioid addicts; helping them avoid withdrawal symptoms while they undergo therapy to help them break their addiction. However, the federal government and the states say Indivior, formerly known as Reckitt Benckiser Group, PLC, promoted the sale of Suboxone to doctors they knew lacked legitimate medical use for the drug, and prescribed it to patients without other accompanying treatment, like counseling. One of the active ingredients, buprenorphine, is a powerful opioid in its own right, making Suboxone a vector of abuse by opioid addicts. The allegations also indicate Indivior falsely claimed the Suboxone Sublingual Film, the typical way the drug is distributed, was more resistant to abuse and less likely to be accidentally exposed to children than the drug in its pill form. The film is placed under the tongue to dissolve, which critics say is just as easy, if not easier, to abuse and be accidentally ingested by children. The states and federal government also claim the manufacturer submitted a fraudulent petition to the FDA in September 2012, which claimed the Suboxone Tablet had to be discontinued due to safety concerns. However, they say that, in actuality, the manufacturer sought to control supply and improperly inflate Suboxone pricing, including what state Medicaid programs paid for it. “Doctors and the public should be able to trust that what a company says their product can do is the truth, especially when the company claims it can be used during the treatment of something as serious as opioid addiction,” Attorney General Bonta said in the press release. “Today’s settlement should send a message that false marketing and improper use of California’s Medicaid dollars will have costly consequences.” In 2019, Reckitt Benckiser Pharmaceuticals reached a $700 million settlement with the federal government and states over Suboxone Medicaid fraud allegations. Indivior spun off from the company shortly afterwards and reached the $600 million agreement with the Justice Department last year. In a statement released in response to Attorney General Bonta’s press release, Indivior notes that the $300 million is coming from that $600 million agreement it made with the Justice Department last year, and does not constitute a commitment to pay additional money to resolve that settlement. “The various state settlement agreements being announced this week are administrative in nature, and simply formalize the individual state settlements which were previously agreed to in principle as part of the July 2020 criminal and civil resolution between Indivior and the states (and the federal government). As such, there is no new financial or legal obligation that has arisen,” the company’s statement reads. “The Company was pleased to put those issues behind it in 2020 and remains focused on realizing its patient-focused Vision and fulfilling its compliance commitments.” The company said it will have no further comments on the settlement agreement. Kayla April 25, 2022 Purdue now suboxone nightmare dental problems plz help us who still suffer Rebecca April 23, 2022 My teeth immediately started rotting out once I got on suboxone. I had just purchased brand new veneers only for them to fall out because of the rot. I’ve now had to have all teeth removed and wear dentures. Maggie April 23, 2022 I have spend thousands of dollars repairing my tooth “decay leaving my dentist puzzled as to what’s causing this. I had perfect teeth always. It dawned on me “what if it’s the suboxone that’s the cause. After googling I found an overwhelming amount of people with the same exact issues. I’ve even asked my dr who prescribe the subs if there have been any reports of dental damage and he said NO. This can’t be right! Is there a way to seek some sort of re compensation for this? Please advice Chad April 21, 2022 Ruined my perfect teeth, never had a cavity or dental issues ever. Started suboxone in 2007-2011, completely ruined my teeth. I have had about 12 teeth pulled, the other ones are all puttied up with dental filler. I have lost my self confidence and makes me cringe every time I think about it. My life is a lot better now, I’ve put a lot of work into my life to have a second chance from those demonic meds, just to be reminded everyday by the scars of yesterday that shouldn’t exist. magan April 21, 2022 At the age 35 yrs old I had to get a full set of dentures due to suboxone eating at my enamel . Not only that I continue gaining weight from it I’ve been on suboxone for 2 years no one ever told me I was going to evitually loose my teeth from it. Kris April 21, 2022 Guess we’re here ask for the same reason. Subs and teeth just went to the prosthodontist yesterday 4/21 to fix the teeth 53k for crowns because subs have ate the enamel off and exposed the dentin off the teeth, have all my teeth, braces 3x and Bi-maxillary Osteotomy they were perfect now this and insurance don’t cover teeth under medical because it’s not seen as medical necessity Amanda April 20, 2022 I was on suboxone for 7 years and my teeth were so shot ny the time I weaned myself off that EVERY one had to be pulled. I have zero teeth in my mouth and my teeth were nice before using the drug. I was never Warned about this by prescribing Dr. I wish I was, not that I wouldn’t have gone on bc I really needed to be clean but I would have been prepared and taken steps to further insure my teeth were taken care of besides the basic brush and floss I did. Do better people. You have ruined my life and my sense of comfortability with eating and being a part of society. I am embarrassed to go out and thus has led to me being a recluse and me being unable to smile and be a part of society. Some people it may not affect like this bit with me it certainly did. Russell April 20, 2022 I’ve been stuck on suboxon for 10 years. My teeth are failing all through my mouth. I floss and brush regularly and could figure out why my teeth were suddenly all failing. Now I realize it’s from suboxon. Jennifer April 20, 2022 ENOUGH IS ENOUGH ALREADY! Where is the Class Action suit against Suboxone for the dental issues!? How many people have to have their lives ruined before someone does something? I hate to point out the obvious, but let’s face it, most people taking Suboxone don’t have enough money to hire a lawyer. I don’t understand how the amount of outcry that I have seen about tooth damage from this horrible medicine has not spurred SOMEBODY to take some action. I am appalled by the number of poor, unsuspecting, people like me who have had such devastating effects from this drug, but more so by the lack of anyone seeming to give a shit. Hey, guess what? We’re not all just junkies with Meth-mouth looking for something else to blame. It’s already been proven that Suboxone does, in fact, cause tooth decay. What the hell is going on here? Marie April 18, 2022 I have been on suboxone since 2013 after being completely clean for more than 6 months. Was told by a dr in NY that they had a blocker medication that would guarantee I could never relapse again, so of course I was interested. Now after many years I have lost ALOT of my teeth and cannot afford to get them fixed. I also missed out on the class action suit which would have given me enough to fix them. I am stuck on this medication and I hate it. 🤬💔😢 Marcus April 18, 2022 I’ve been on suboxone for over 10 years know more addiction worst know I believe all of my teeth are bad Kevin April 18, 2022 I’ve was wondering why my teeth were going to crap so badly an I was told that subs are not addictive and they definitely are 3 years later and I can’t count the dentist appointments later I need almost all new teeth Jamie April 18, 2022 Everything they told us was a lie…. I have about 9 teeth left. Shame on you Suboxone for not telling the whole truth. Jessica April 18, 2022 I have had 3 teeth pulled in the 2 years I’ve been on suboxone. And my front ones are breaking now. Alison April 18, 2022 I’m in sub WD right now. , day 5. I’m using Lucemyra, which a Medical Assistant told me about when the dr. wasn’t there. I honestly have to ,say besides the sweats & usual uncomfortable feeling of WD, this lucemyra is absolutely helping. Now to the teeth. Before starting this crap ( subutex) I had perfect teeth. I’ve now after being on it 12 years, have major recession of my gums, especially where we melt it, under our tongues. Those teeth are probably going to have to be pulled eventually & hopefully I’ll be able to have a bridge, as my dentist was honest & told me , there is too much bone loss to have implants. All of my gums are having major recession & we’re doing deep cleanings, prescription toothpaste etc. to try to stop the recession. I see gum grafts in the future. IDK how I escaped the rotting ( I have a lot of implants from being on methadone in my 20’s) Now to the pain I’m experiencing from a botched surgery on my left foot. I didn’t realize how much the subutex masked the pain. My foot is screaming, I have it elevated & have taken ibuprofen 800 mg’s ( Lol like that’s gonna help) long & short of my 2 cent’s, I’d have gone through the WD’s of the Roxy’s without a second thought, if I’d known the hell & the lost 12 years this drug has taken from me. Not to mention the $$ I don’t even want think about the amount. Nobody twisted my arm to take the drug, I feel we were all Guinea pigs with subs. Also, having had surgeries foot & shoulder, my bones are brittle , like an old lady ( Im 55 they’re saying they’re more like an 80 year olds bones -hence the teeth issues, makes a heck of a lot of sense.) And no, I was never apprised of any lawsuits ( I’m not a Sue happy person, however in this case, I will be pursuing, my dr. sexual harrassed me, which is another story. Well known dr. in Broward county Florida) Anyone even considered getting on subs, please reconsider. Losing the relationships, losing my marriage, my career, MYSELF absolutely was not worth it. I had 11.5 years sober & ironically started getting my teeth fixed, and the sleeping monster was awoken ( we had pill mills all over south Florida & I was frequenting 2-3 of them, along with my then BF. ) Sobriety rocks, I know God will restore the 12 years the locust’s have eaten away.. wish everyone a good journey off this stuff. codie April 17, 2022 My name is Codie, 34. Im from a small town in Ohio. Struggled with addiction alot through out my life. Been clean 7 years. Soboxone saved my life and now i find out it shattered my teeth and my self confidence. I had never had one cavity now all of my upper back teeth had to get pulled. Last dentist trip dr said i needed then all pulled upper lower dentures. My smile has always been very important to me and now im struggling. I was unaware, and dental is so high i can forget about it. Whats going on with the claim? I was just informed? Tina April 17, 2022 I was also prescribed Suboxone. I want it so badly to be off of drugs but I thought this was literally a miracle. But since taking savant I have lost all my back teeth and the decay got so bad that four months ago I had all my teeth pulled and now Waiting on dentures.. my quality of life it’s so much worse, I can’t eat much and I hate to smile… I wish I never was prescribed this medication Brian April 17, 2022 I have been on suboxone since 2012. I used to have great teeth. Since being on Suboxone I have had to have teeth polled I have broken teeth in my mouth right now and several rotten teeth. I am very Self conscious about it I don’t like to smile so people don’t see. I have never been formed not using Suboxone could cause dental problems. Thank you Penny April 17, 2022 I have been on Suboxone since April 2012. Although It definitely saved my life from using opioids and being able to live a better life. I have lost ALL my teeth. I had to have them all pulled in 2015 because they were all rotted and broken. It has absolutely ruined my self-esteem and am very self conscious due to not having teeth. I have never been told still to this day the suboxone causes dental problems, so I am very happy to know someone cares enough to share and try and right this wrong. I do have dentures but I can not where my bottoms at all because of bone loss and my top I can only where sometimes. I can’t eat with them because food gets under the plate and has caused me to choke as well as not being able to eat a lot of foods due to the fact that I can’t chew because I don’t have any teeth and have choked on multiple occasions. Samantha April 17, 2022 I have been on Suboxone for years and have had all my teeth removed finding out that Suboxone can be the reason wow! I thought I was going to have a better life and lost my smile! Kim April 17, 2022 I was addiction product of OxyContin for chronic pain. My life was out of control. Went to rehab and was started on Suboxone. Since using Suboxone my teeth have literally rotted out of my mouth. I see a dentist 2 a year. Have spent a small fortune to save my teeth only to have them crumble. I need dentures. I’m young. I’m not about to leave my house or speak to anyone face to face. You smile is your calling card and you Suboxone ripped it away without warning. We deserve compensation so we can face the world. I know one thing, isolating is not good for people who have struggled with addiction. Make it right. Michele April 16, 2022 I went on Suboxone in 2018. my teeth started deteriorating roughly to the point where in 2 weeks I have to have surgery to have them removed and replaced with dentures. I’ve tried repeatedly to stop taking Suboxone and have not been successful due to the extreme withdrawal symptoms that come with it. I’m bipolar with PTSD and generalized anxiety disorder and the mental effects from trying to come off this drug have been horrific and devastating to my life. Caity April 15, 2022 I have been on suboxone since when it pretty much came out, I have lost SO many teeth causing severe mouth pain as well as major self image issues. I was NEVER told how addictive and hardest drug ever to get off of as well as NOTHING was ever told to me about it damaging my BEAUTIFUL teeth my parents spent THOUSANDS of dollars in braces, expanders, retainers and dentists to make perfect. Now I am missing several and can’t afford to get the implants I so badly need. This is devastating to someone that had perfect teeth until I had started my recovery with this medication. Jessica April 15, 2022 I was put on Suboxone years ago and I was never told that they was addictive and I have had to get all of my teeth pulled Prescilla April 15, 2022 Hopefully we can all get some help with this it’s so sad on how hard it is to stop and the dental issues are bad and it adds to the depression. Heather April 14, 2022 Been on Suboxone for about 5 years now. I had almost perfect teeth when I first started Suboxone. Now, I lost them all & had to get dentures. I never was told how addicting it was. I can’t get off of them. Tierra April 14, 2022 I have been on suboxone for 3 years, my doctor has not talked once about weaning me off, and has never mentioned anything about tooth decay/loss. Now I can hardly smile because my teeth are so bad. I can’t get them fixed at the moment due to my medicaid not covering what I need. They will only cover to pull and I refuse to get my front teeth pulled. This is devastating. Angelina April 14, 2022 I was on methadone for several years but when I heard that subpxone was supposedly safer an less addicting and easier withdraws I decided to switch. The switch itself really about put me in hospital and I was doing exactly what the suboxone dr told me to. Also I quickly found that it was not less addictive at all! It also ruined my teeth so bad and I won’t even smile anymore and the medicine hurt my kidneys way more then methadone an it was supposed ti be easier on your body ab organs which it was definitely not! I also found out later that the doctor was overcharging everyone too! I would like to stand up wth the many people who had a bad experience wth Suboxone just like I did! We were all lied to from the start.please feel free to contact me anytime and Thankyou so much. Denise April 14, 2022 I have been on suboxone for 11 years now. When I first got put on it I was told this is a temporary solution and you will be good as new in no time. 11 years later and I am still addicted to this “non addictive” miracle drug and now I am told this is a forever medication. I was never told this would effect my dental health and now 11 Years later my teeth are decayed and falling apart. I brush my teeth 4 times a day and have done so all my life. It will cost me around 30,000 to get a whole mouth of implants and have my smile back. If I knew even half of what I know now 11 years ago I would never have listened to any doctors telling me how amazing this drug is. It definitely helped me stay off opiates but I feel as though I was bamboozled by every doctor about how safe this drug is. Never would I have imagined my teeth just breaking and falling apart or decaying in the manner that they are. I am only 35 years old and technically I need a full denture set to get back my dental health. It’s disgusting, infuriating and saddening all at the same time. Not to mention the cost of getting dental work is outrageous. I was quoted $30,000 to pull all my teeth and get permanent implants placed in. All because I had faith in this “miracle drug” to “save my life”. Joey April 14, 2022 I’m grateful for Suboxone bit was never told about the tooth decay I’ve lost most of my teeth and some kinda compensation would help me get dentures and help my wallet for the cash I’ve spent on doctors visits and getting my high dollar script filled for over 7years or more !!! Star April 14, 2022 I was on pain meds and found out I was pregnant in 2017 my doctor dropped me the minute I told him I was pregnant. They told me to go to a high risk doctor who wanted me on methadone. We said no! I went to another doctor who swore that Suboxone was safe for the baby and put me on em. I’ve been on them since. My daughter is special needs due to I’m sure the “safe” Suboxone. My teeth are slowly getting bad my only saving grace for my teeth was that I put the sub in the back of my throat and swallowed. Only because I throw up from the taste. What are my opinions? I’ve had no help!! Damian April 14, 2022 I am currently on Suboxone and my teeth one by one are crumbling. It is near impossible to come off of. Heather April 14, 2022 Been on suboxone since august 2020 and I’ve already had 5 teeth pulled and the rest of my teeth are just decaying away and I was never told anything bad at all about suboxone!!!!!! Laural April 14, 2022 I started suboxone less than 4 years ago. I was never told it was addicting I was never told or helped to taper. I have also loss many of my teeth from this and I didn’t learn about tooth loss from the drug until about a month ago on the internet. But I have so much decay I need all new teeth and yes I brush them so it’s not from that. My quality of life had definitely been affected by this as I can’t afford to get them fixed I need all new teeth so that’s a lot of money. If I would have known this I would have never started the program to begin with. Jenine April 13, 2022 I was prescribed suboxone strips for quite a while. Not only was I told that it was non addictive. ( I was told it was the new miracle drug) But I too have had the worst dental issues since receiving treatment. Almost every one of my back teeth have broken and are gone. My fronts are just behind. I had perfect teeth. A perfect smile. To now I cant eat really and I most certainly can no longer smile. Which is super hard as I was always a big full teeth smiler. Jennifer April 13, 2022 I was never told about the damage my teeth, and i have had severe bone loss, and many cavaties since starting suboxone. Not to mention how addictive it is Haley April 13, 2022 I I’ve been on subutex / Suboxone for the last year and haven’t really had many issues with my teeth I went to the dentist March 31st 2022 and it’s going to cost me $7,000.00 to fix my mouth and that’s all out of pocket Medicaid won’t cover dental I don’t even really smile anymore because my teeth are falling out and when my dr first talked about Suboxone never mentioned it would cause my teeth to fall out she has never once warned me Amanda April 12, 2022 I’ve been on suboxone since 2015. I’ve lost several teeth and soon will need dentures. The pain I’m going through getting teeth pulled, The money spent to a dentist and embarrassment because the way I look with no teeth at a young age of 34 is not worth it. I was never told this would ruin my teeth or that it was addictive. I want my teeth fixed I want my smile back. And the money I’ve spent trying to fix them! Candice April 12, 2022 My doctor prescribed suboxone film and pills for pain management. I’ve been taking the pill form for 4 years and my teeth are falling out. Now the makers of suboxone tell my doctor to give me a shot for pain- it’s only for substance abuse. I’ve lost my dignity because they pushed this drug as an alternative for pain. It barely helps take the edge off and my mouth is in horrible shape Gene April 12, 2022 I’ve been on Suboxone since 2017 and had no issues with my teeth when I started but 2 years in, one by one my back teeth were decaying with no lack of dental hygiene, and now I cannot eat anything unless it’s soft due to the pain I’m in everyday. I just found out this year and now it’s too late? What about the claim? Is it over even if I wasn’t notified after being prescribed this all these years? Why isn’t the doctor telling me? Matthew April 12, 2022 Been on suboxin for along time wasn’t told it could make my teeth bad like they have got from takeing this medication!!! Need someone to contact me about this got to be a good case Ryan April 11, 2022 I have been on suboxone sense September 2021 & I’ve already had to have three of my back teeth removed at oral surgery which cost me over $900, & im now having issues with another back tooth as well as some of my front teeth. Also when I’ve tried to taper off of the drug I haven’t been able to & the drug has as bad withdrawals if not worse than pain pills & heroin ! I’d like to know about this or any other lawsuit please ! Kassandra April 11, 2022 I have been on suboxone since 2015 and never got comp from any lawsuits i have also lost my teeth from being on this Delores April 11, 2022 I’ve been on suboxone for over 10 years really destroyed my teeth how do I get compensated I can prove my case Brit April 11, 2022 Subs weren’t supposed to be addictive but that was a lie. I was on subs for 4 years. It got my weight down to 103 (I am 5’8” & very slender as it is) & gave me terrible depression. On top of that, I am now having major dental issues from the medication. This is NOT a safe medication. Please do everything to can to discontinue this medication. ALLISON April 11, 2022 What about the new FDA warning about tooth loss/decay while using Suboxone. Nobody ever told me this. Being on Suboxone for 12 years, started with perfect teeth, now most of my back teeth are broken and falling out! Help us! Alicia April 11, 2022 I was completely sober on my own will for 5 yrs. My fibro was out of hand qnd a Dr wanted me to go on a pain clinic. I didn’t want to go back on opiods and he convinced me Sub film was safer and that I wouldn’t face terrible withdrawals addiction to it etc. I really didn’t know much about subs so I agreed. It’s now 4 yrs later, I have lost majority of my teeth, I can’t seem to get myself off these and I feel like absolute crap. Subs are one of the WORSE on the market imo and Dr’s are pushing them while lying left qnd right. Oh, in my chart…it says I am on them for addiction, not pain management!!! I was like um I wasn’t taking these to get off drugs, I am using them for pain wtf?? Thier excuse “insurance reasons” Chelsie April 11, 2022 I’ve been on Suboxone for over 3 years and I’ve noticed a huge change in the overall heath of my teeth. I’m very much tired of the games doctor’s play. Caleb April 11, 2022 I’ve been on suboxone going on 13 years now and I’m just now hearing about this. The damage it has caused me physically mentally and emotionally. Became addicted and it’s much harder to kick the suboxone habit than the pill habit I formed due to a gallbladder removed that lead to many other complications hernia mesh repairs. I mentally had no idea the repercussions I endured be abuse it was not paired with therapy as i realize I need now. I’ve burned many bridges with family because I didn’t know how to explain the suboxone treatments and the sociological effects it had on me. I’ve been to hell and back ever since I had the emergency surgery with my gallbladder 25 years ago and I lost all hope on living a fulfilled life being a productive member of society, it was all taken from me at a very young age and not one doctor tried helping me correct what went so wrong.
