Vision Problems from Humira Result in Lawsuit Over Optic Nerve Damage

Abbott Laboratories faces a product liability lawsuit over Humira, their blockbuster arthritis and Crohn’s Disease drug, which was filed by a woman who alleges that she has developed optic nerve damage and permanent vision problems from Humira.

The Humira lawsuit was filed by Jamie Bixby in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois on May 20, 2011.

Bixby alleges that side effects of Humira caused her to develop optic neuritis, an inflammation of the optic nerve that has left her with permanent impairment to vision in her left eye and a future risk of other nerve problems, including multiple sclerosis or loss of vision in her other eye.

Humira (adalimumab) is a “biologic” drug, which is part of a class of medications known as TNF blockers or tumor necrosis factor blockers. The medication was launched by Abbott Laboratories in 2003 for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, but was subsequently approved for other indications, including treatment of Crohn’s Disease.

According to allegations raised in the complaint, Abbott downplayed the potential risk of Humira vision problems, despite the fact that information was available to establish notice that the drug may increase the risk of optic neuritis and other nerve damage from central nervous system (CNS) demyelination.

Bixby began using Humira in April 2008 for treatment of Crohn’s Disease, after her doctor suggested that the medication may be a better option than the long-term use of the steroid prednisone, which had been managing her symptoms. No warnings were provided on the drug label or prescription information that Humira may cause permanent damage to her vision at the time she began taking the medication.

In May 2008, Bixby indicates that she began experiencing severe headaches and pain in her left eye, which led her to call the toll free number provided with her Humira packet to ask if the problems may be related to the use of Humira. According to allegations contained in the complaint, Abbott’s nurse told her that eye pain was not related to Humira and suggested she contact her physician.

When Bixby contacted her doctor, she was told by the doctor’s office that they were unaware that eye problems were a known issue with Humira and scheduled an appointment for the following week. However, the next day Bixby noticed that the vision in her left eye became blurry with blacked out areas, causing her to leave work and seek immediate medical attention at an eye clinic.

Bixby was diagnosed with optic neuritis from Humira in both eyes, though she only experienced vision problems in her left eye. Following her diagnosis, Bixby was admitted for inpatient treatment to receive 4 days of intravenous steroids.

“Unfortunately, because Abbott had not adequately warned Ms. Bixby or her physician about the risk of optic neuritis, the diagnosis and treatment came too late to prevent permanent vision impairment for Ms. Bixby,” the complaint states.

Bixby previously worked as a web designer, and claims that she continues to suffer from headaches and eye pain that impact her ability to look at a computer screen for significant periods of time. She also continues to suffer blurry vision and black holes in the vision from her left eye, and has extreme light sensitivity and changes to her depth perception that affect her ability to drive or ride a bike.

Plaintiff alleges that Abbott downplayed the risk of Humira side effects, including the risk of Central Nervous System (CNS) demyelination, which can cause optic neuritis, transverse myelitis, multiple sclerosis or other nerve problems.

I’ve noticed over the last few months, that a few days after my injection, my eye pain especially my left eye is almost unbearable. Uveitis causes the severe pain, I know this because I’ve had it for over 6 years now. This pain was different, so I went to my eye doctor, thinking it was a flare. After having my eye pressures checked, I now have increased intraoccular pressure that requires a drop every night. I’ve talked to my rheumatologist about this issue, and he tells me that Humira doesn’t cause increased pressure like that, however, I’ve read several different articles stating differently. So now I’m stuck with either staying on this medication and dealing with the increased side effects, or stopping it and risk increased symptoms from my autoimmune issues. I definitely feel, and so does my eye doctor, that the Humira is causing my issues. After reading these comments, at least I know I’m not alone.

I have been taking Humeria for 7 or 8 months and my eye sight has defiantly gotten worse. My vision is blurry with or without my glasses. I have frequent headaches and the shots are leaving bruises. I can’t do this drug anymore

About two years ago I started Humira, a short time my eyes started to bother me like I had very bad eye strain. I went to the local V.A. clinic and they gave me a new pair of glasses which ended up not helping my eyes any. I thought It may have been a bad prescription, so I finally went to vision for less and got another new pair of glasses. I was still having the same eye issues going on though. My right eye keeps wanting to close on its own, so I mentioned that the the local V.A. clinic and they sent me to the V.A. clinic in Iowa City for a total eye exam. One of the doctors was from the University of Iowa City. They came to the conclusion that Humira was the cause of my eye problems. They contacted my G.I. doctor, he called me and told me to stop taking the Humira immediately. I have been off of Humira for about 2 months now and there's been no improvement in my eyes

I Consulted my dermatologist and Humira navigator again being told it has nothing to do with Humira. I went to an optometrist who preformed surgery. Fast forward to 2018 The black holes were back. I consulted the dermatologist and the pharmacist at Humira they denied this was a side affect of Humira. I scheduled an appointment with ophthalmologist due to depth perception peripheral vision loss and sensitivity to light I stopped driving myself because I didn’t feel safe and didn’t want to hurt someone. May of this year I was diagnosed as legally blind. Humira as of last week denied visual issues with Humira this coming from their pharmacist. I loss my job as a social worker. I cannot go outside in the sun even though I wear 3 pair of sunglasses this is how extreme my sensitivity to light has become. I now use green or blue light bulbs in my house. I thank GOD this information popped up to affirm Humira has caused my vision issues.

Forget lawsuits, I just want to not have 1/4 inch "cuts" in my hands and feet due to psoriasis AND be able to see. IF this drug causes these issues, so easily, without LOUD warnings, shame on them. Wish me luck on Friday that I have an eye dr. that will listen, care, and be honest!

I was hospitalized and rushed to the ER for mini strokes and/or seizures. I developed severe tremors, vision problems, confusion, and neurological damage. Which led to neuropathy and nerve damage in my back. I have a high tolerance for pain; there's NOOO pain like neuropathy... running through your neck, arms and legs... Each ankle, foot, and toe. There's no reprieve. Then came paralysis of my right foot and ankle. Finally the Devil Humira was stopped. My tremors stopped. My strokes stopped. Unfortunately, the other damage remains. Moral of the story. If your behavior changes. If your experiencing pain or odd symptoms, talk to your doctor and demand to try another medication. This med worked for awhile,.. But then it became POISON and I believe could have killed me!!!?
