Stork Craft Baby Crib Recall: Over 500,000 Cribs

Another major baby crib recall has been issued, this time involving about 535,000 Stork Craft cribs sold in the United States and another 494,000 in Canada. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) indicates that defective metal support brackets on the baby cribs could break, causing the mattress to collapse and create a risk of entrapment or suffocation for infants.

The Stork Craft baby crib recall applies to all cribs manufactured and sold since May 2000, regardless of the model, style or finish. The date the crib was recalled and the manufacturer’s name, Stork Craft Manufacturing, Inc., of British Columbia, Canada, are located on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board.

The cribs were sold throughout the United States at Kmart, Wal-Mart and JC Penney stores, as well as online at Babiesrus.com, Walmart.com, Amazon.com and Costco.com. The prices ranged from between $100 to $400.

The U.S. CPSC indicates that at least 10 reports have been received where one or more of the metal mattress support brackets broke, including several reports where the mattress collapsed, creating a dangerous gap between the mattress and the crib rails. One report involved a toddler who suffered a head injury, including bruises to his forehead, and another child became entrapped in the gap, but suffered no injury.

Owners of any Stork Craft cribs have been urged to stop using the crib and to contact Stork Crafft at (866) 361-3321 to receive a free replacement kit with new mattress support brackets.

Since the U.S. CPSC instituted new procedures for handling safety complaints in 2007, millions of baby cribs have been recalled in the United States.

In October 2008, nearly 1,585,000 cribs were impacted by a Delta crib recall, after several babies died due to problems with the safety and spring pegs, which could allow the drop side of the crib to disengage, creating a dangerous gap between the mattress and side of the crib.

Earlier this month, a Jardine Babies R Us crib recall, which was originally issued in June 2008 , was expanded to include over 375,000 baby cribs that were found to contain defective slats that could break, creating a dangerous gap in which the baby could get stuck, fall out of the crib or strangle themselves.

September 2014 When your children sleep, it should be one of the safest places for them and a worry free time for parents. Not in this case. I have twins using the Stork Craft crib and the have both repeatedly gotten their legs trapped in the slots. They have become trapped with their legs getting twisted. Both have received severe bruising and I am concerned that they may dislocate or brake a bone. We have tried using bumpers, however, this does not prevent them from getting their legs caught in a standing position. My daughter had her leg trapped so severely that we thought of cutting the slots to get her out. But the idea of using a saw next to a infant stopped us. With some wiggling and pressure we got her free. She was bruised for two weeks on that leg. I can not get a hold of anyone at company and wish that they had a better way of contacting them. It is my opinion that the slats are to far apart allowing older infants/young toddlers to get their legs trapped. This brand has had major recalls before but I don’t see any mention of recalls regarding slats. The last recall was regarding the mattress. Something should be done as a preventative measure before something worse happens. I will have to replace two cribs and was hoping that the company could assist with that. When I did get a hold of them, all they gave me was a reference number, an email address to forward pictures to with instructions to email, sit and wait. At this point, I am a frustrated and an extremely worried parent regarding the safety of my children. Please assist. The safety of all children should be priority number one.

Recently my son had his leg trapped inbetween the slats of his lauren crib made by stork craft , i contacted them with my concerns due to the fact he was injuired and this company does not give a crap about injuiries in there products they feel they dont make them why be responsible makes me sick . my 2yr old son now is terrified of a crib . how can this be justified when a company dosent care !

Did any of you purchase your cribs with a credit card? In many situations you can dispute the charge on your card, making a written explaination of the problem, and it will be removed and/or the money refunded to your account. This is one reason why I make purchases with a credit card. No matter how much money you are out, you would give it a million times over to undo something that happening to your child. Luckily most of you became aware of the problem before your children were harmed. It’s just money, which you can replace. You cannot replace a child.

My son Tyler died after his neck became entrapped between the siderail and head board of his oak crib. That was in 1997. Within two years 90 babies died and 11,000 were injured in various drop-side cribs. The design is flawed. Horrific. Kristin…tears are in my eyes. I am so very happy that crib is out of your nursery. I found my son already gone and I miss him every day.

I purchased my daughter’s crib in 2007. Since then, I have had nothing but problems. The drop rail side is defected and cannot be lowerered because when it is lowered it comes off the plastic track and has to be forced back into the track. The other side has a much more serious problem, the side has become completely separated creating a dangerous gap between the the side of the crib and the mattress where she can become trapped. It swings open and she can crawl out of it, or become pinned in her sleep. I am glad that they are sending out repair kits, but I am still afraid that the real issue, the safety of the crib, is not going to be resolved. When I purchased my crib I read all the safety details about my crib and bought is solely because it was promised to be the safest. To be completely honest, I don’t even like the appearance. So now I am stuck with an ugly unsafe crib that I can’t afford to replace.

I am amazed that the mattress supports and not the cheap plastic sliders for the droprail are subject to the recall. In the two years I have owned my storkcraft crib the plastic parts that attach the dropside to the crib have broken twice. This caused a dangerous gap which my daughter could have easily slipped through and become seriously injured or even strangled. The first time I was sent replacment parts by storkcraft. The second time I have received no response from storkcraft. I reported the incident to CPSC. Luckily the replacment parts I was sent the first time included the plastic part I needed to replace. However I am worried about continuing to use the crib due to the repeated breaks and potential for injury.

I bought a storkcraft crib in 2005 and spent 400.00 plus S.H. thinking that I would avoid the risk of my child’s life being put in danger because of the greed of a corrupt company- I thought wrong. Less than a year later (still under warranty) the bracket broke and the door began coming off from the crib- my daughter fell out of the crib breaking her tooth in the front from the fall. I called the company and left a detailed message and my call was never returned. In the meantime I changed the screws in the hopes of tiding us over until I heard from Storkcraft. The bracket once again came loose and I awoke to my daughter screaming, her head was stuck in the broken door. Horrified, I called Strorkcraft and was told a receptionist who refused to redirect my call the entire story and instead of concern she began berating me viciously telling me I should not have attempted to fix the crib-as if I had another choice. I called back demanding to be transferring as high up as possible and when the work lawsuit came out I was connected to a man who referred to himself as the “top of the ladder”. He feigned concern and offered to send me an entirely new crib. A month later we received a box with a new door (not even the part we needed to fix it). I dismantled the death crib and we had to buy a new one. It sits in our shed gathering mold a bitter reminder of how close we came to losing the light of our lives because some evil scumbag wanted to save his company a whole 1% profit by using defective parts for over 9 years and wouldn’t even stop after ten REPORTED children almost lost their young lives- make that eleven reported including my daughter- Eden.
