American Signature Entertainment Centers Recalled Due to Fall Hazard

About 24,000 American Signature entertainment centers have been recalled over reports that several of them collapsed, sometimes falling onto consumers.

The entertainment center recall was announced on June 16 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) after the manufacturer, American Signature Inc., received at least four reports of the shelf above the television collapsing. At least two people have been injured, including a child whose fingers were struck and an adult who received a mouth injury that required stitches. There were also minor property damage reports received as well.

The CPSC has determined that the entertainment centers’ shelves can slip off and fall when the center is moved.

The recall affects about 24,000 American Signature, Inc. entertainment centers with the model names “Arts and Crafts,” Vineyard Manor,” “Lake Cottage,” “Studio One,” “West Indies,” and “Plantation Cove.” The entertainment centers were sold in the colors dark brown, natural, black and white and have fixed or adjustable shelves.

The entertainment centers were sold at Value City Furniture, Rooms Today and American Signature Furniture stores nationwide from October 2002 through December 2009 for about $1,650.

The CPSC recommends that consumers who have bought the recalled entertainment centers avoid moving them until they are repaired. American Signature Inc. has said it is sending a free repair kit to those who purchased the entertainment center. Consumers with questions can visit the company’s websites at www.vcf.com and www.asfurniture.com.
