Chantix Suicide Lawsuits Mount Against Pfizer

|

Three new Chantix lawsuits were filed last week in New York state court against Pfizer, Inc., the manufacturer of the popular smoking cessation drug. The cases were filed on behalf of individuals who claim that side effects of Chantix caused users to commit or attempt suicide, adding to the mounting number of similar suits filed against the drug maker in both state and federal courts.

Chantix (varenicline) was approved by the FDA in 2006 as a prescription treatment to help people quit smoking. The drug works by blocking receptors in the brain that are commonly stimulated by nicotine, reducing the positive feelings that come from cigarettes. However, shortly after Chantix was introduced, adverse event reports linked the drug to an increased risk of severe psychological side effects, such as depression, suicidal thoughts and other abnormal behavior.

The first known Chantix suicide lawsuit was filed in July 2008 in federal court in Indiana, by the widow of a man with no history of mental illness who committed suicide a few months after stating the medication. Since that time dozens of other cases have been filed in other courts throughout the country.

In October 2009, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation consolidated all federal lawsuits over Chantix in the Northern District of Alabama. At that time, there were 34 different Chantix suits pending in 16 different federal district courts. Since then, another 14 complaints have been transferred into the MDL, or multidistrict litigation, as tag-along actions.

The two recent New York state court Chantix lawsuit complaints were filed last week in the Supreme Court in Manhattan. They were brought on behalf of two plaintiffs who allegedly attempted suicide and one woman who killed herself while using the drug. According to the complaints, Pfizer intentionally, recklessly and negligently concealed or misrepresented the Chantix health risks.

Similar allegations are seen throughout all of the suicide lawsuits over Chantix, claiming that Pfizer failed to adequately research their medication or adequately warn doctors and patients about the potential psychological Chantix effects.

During clinical trials performed before the drug was introduced, individuals with a psychiatric history or current psychiatric symptoms were excluded from the studies. As a result, Chantix problems were not evaluated among people with common conditions like depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, and insufficient warnings were placed on the drug.

Pfizer has defended its popular smoking cessation drug, saying that they intend to vigorously defend against the lawsuits. In a statement released last week, Pfizer officials said that they have clearly communicated the risks of Chantix side effects.

Last year, the FDA required that a new Chantix black box warning be placed prominently on the label to warn users about the potentially life-threatening side effects, which is the strongest warning that can be placed on a prescription medication.

My 25 year old son started taking Chantix back in November of 2009, at Christmas he told his cousin he had to stop taking it because he had suicidal thoughts. He shot himself March 18th. I will be filing suit. He seemed very depressed to me for a couple of weeks leading up to the 18th, but said he was O.K.. I had no idea he was taking Chantix until after he was deceased.

One of my best friends’ son committed suicie a few weeks ago after taking this for a few months. Violent totally out of character suicide. 26 years old. Just married last fall. Young children. Promising electrical career. Not depressed. Very very tragic, and life altering (obviously) to all those left behind.

I am glad I found this site. I just filled the first part of the program prescription. At a cost to myself of $145.00, since insurance does not cover it, hmm wonder why? I may have well just flushed that money down the toilet. What really bothers me is that a Heart & Cardiovascular doctor gave it to me knowing I am in a highly stressful situation with two young children! Throwing away the money & drug surpasses throwing away my life…

I am a 36 year old woman who has been smoking since I was nine years old. I have never been able to quit. I took chantix for the first time during the holidays in December/January 2006/2007, I only took it for 3 weeks and did not smoke during that time. I was not willing to pay the enormous co-pay for the refill and discontinued the medication. During those three weeks I was experienceing disturbing nightmares and mild depression. In July 2008, with a new employer/flex spend account I was able to afford the co-pay for the prescription and requested another from my primary doctor. Within the first six weeks I was aggressive, violent and depressed and labled manic. I was instructed by my doctor to immediately stop taking the Chantix. It took me about a month to get “back to normal”. My Job suffered, my marriage and family life suffered because of this medication and it’s lack of warning.

I believe Chantix destroys lives. I have to wonder how many suicides were the result of Chantix but friends or family didn’t know or didn’t put it together? And how many people, like me, took it for a while and simply tossed it in the garbage after realizing that I was on the verge of a mental breakdown as a result of the side effects? When I reported it to my doctor, she acted like I was ridiculous and said ‘well it works for everyone else’. I feel very lucky that I was able to know I was headed for trouble on Chantix. Here is a story of a woman who did suffer a breakdown and is telling her story http://chantixunthinkable.blogspot.com/

This is week 8 for me on Chantix and haven’t smoked in 7. I’ll go probably one more week and clock out. 🙂 I did have suicidal thoughts and well as night terrors, many times, but when this would happen I would just smoke some pot. This sounds ridiculous, but was an excellent mood curver! Contrary to what others say, lawsuits, suicide, etc.. This drug WORKS, however I would recommend a moderate amount of supervision while taking the drug. for sure.

I’m with Tim. What’s going on with the chantix lawsuits? I know Pfizer is a powerful company…but, let’s face it, Chantix kills and all the sugarcoating in the world will not wash clean the damages this drug has done…and will CONTINUE to do, if it remains on the market.

The first known lawsuit regarding a Chantix death was filed in January 2008. It is now February 2010. So what has happened with this lawsuit? There have been many lawsuits filed in the interim and what is the justice department and the FDA doing to restrict the use of this killer drug? And what is Pfizer doing to compensate the victims, or the families of the victim, who unwittingly took this drug hoping for a better life without cigarettes and ended up 6 feet under? From my perspective they have done absolutlely nothing except hide behind the judicial system.

I took Chantix for 2 months and totalled my car 3 months after having had a tri-level bone fusion done on my neck. Within a week of starting Chantix, my best friend told me that I just wasn’t myself. I didn’t feel depressed or suicidal so I didn’t quit taking it. I exhibited aggressive behavior that was out of character and I thought I was just in a bad mood from quitting smoking!

It’s my hope that attorneys don’t lose sight of the easiest to prove risk-benefit issue, that Pfizer’s drug approval studies were not blind as claimed, are not grounded in science and that all drug approval studies were designed to make news, not determine Chantix’s worth as a cessation product. Why did Chantix studies involve a record 25 counseling and support sessions? Because counseling and support have proven their effectiveness. What is Chantix’s value when used as a stand alone quitting aid? We still don’t know but it probably doesn’t exceed 10% at 6 months.
